Late Night Chick Party

So, there I was sitting at my computer....about 1 am (Yes, I know. Don't yell at me now. I was probably reading YOUR blog.) and I heard a familiar noise, a noise I typically only hear during the day, right after one of our chickens lays an egg.

But it was dark outside....it was 1 am.

So, I grabbed my camera (naturally) and bounded down the stairs (well, not exactly bounded...but it sounds good, so I'm keeping it...so there) and tiptoed outside with the video rolling.

Of course, it was too dark outside, so finally I switched on the porch light, lest anyone who might watch this video think that something was wrong with their computer.

So, when you watch this crazy video, hang in there for the light....it will come........eventually...............I promise.

LOL--damn chickens! I love how they all just looked at you like, "What's your problem, lady?"

They are so funny when they do that uncontrollable clucking/hyperventilating thing ... of course, when mine are doing it I usually don't think it's funny, because I'm always sure that one of them is getting eaten or something.

I could not image WHAT you were going to find at the end of your exploration, but the chickens singing in the dark was great! You must know your way around really well not to stump your toes in that pitch-black. Did you ever find out what was going on?

That's pretty funny how they all got quiet as soon as you opened the door. They were guilty of something!

Awwww! Makes me smile and remember all those times we'd have a friend over to spend the night and it would be really really late and we'd get laughing so hard my parents would have to come and see what the commotion was, and we'd get really quiet and pretend to be fast asleep...lol

That's so funny! Tons of noise, but when you opened the door, they stopped! Either they were having a crazy party at one in the morning, and they walked in and new they were 'busted' (LOL) or they were crying for their mommy! :D Wow, what funny birds...

Oh, it was so fun hearing you talk to the chickens! Did you ever figure out what they were carrying on about?

Hee! Ever seen that movie, "Chicken Run"?? I like how you talk to your chickens. I talk to my horse and all the pets I know like they are people, too!! :)

It's so funny that they all shut up when you come out!. Kind of like, "What?"

Ha, ha ha! But I have so many questions...Why was it dark for so long, I saw the point that you got outside and started walking to the coop...why were the chickens so loud from inside the house? You don't have a baby monitor on them, do you???? Did you ever figure out what all the fuss was about? Maybe a mouse or something was running around in there with them.

So...when are my girls going to start sounding like real chickens? Your girls sound great. You keep telling me how big mine are, but they still cheep and peep just like little babies!! :-)

meg,
I know! haha That's just the way they were looking at me, too.

Pat, nope. Have no idea what caused all the ruckus. Maybe they were just telling dirty 'cock' jokes? hehe And the coop is very easy to get to, as it's just 8 feet away from our house. BUt if I had stubbed my toe, it would have been all in the name of blogging! hehe

Nuzzling Muzzles,
I think so, too! But what? I still don't know. Those sneaky girls!

Hey Robbyn, I think you pegged it, girlfriend! hehe

hehehe, Mell! You got it girl! I think they were into some kind of mischief. But they did go right to sleep after I came and told them to. hehe

Hi Christy,
Thanks for stopping by. Nope I never did. I agree it's fun to hear other blogger's voice or faces. Good to match faces/voices to blog.

Hi Pony Girl,
Thanks for visiting my blog. I want to visit yours soon, too. I'm guessing that you have horses/ponies?
How about chickens?
Sadly I haven't seen Chicken Run yet. I think I really need to see it now that we have chickens. I bet I will pass out from laughing. hehe

Hi CeeCee,
I know. It was so funny. I couldn't have planned that better. I'm so glad that I thought to video tape it from my camera.

Hi Farmgirl DK,
Hmmm....It was so dark for so long because I didn't want to turn on the light in case it alerted the chickens to my presence. They have a window that light can shine into. And I thought my camera would provide enough flash/light to video tape it. But obviously it didn't.

The chickens were probably so loud from inside their house because they have their window open on the side, but also because there were several of them squawking. But mostly because chickens can be very loud...even hens.
Oh, and I had my windows open in the house, too, so that is what alerted me to their 'party'.

No, no baby monitor. Are you going to get one for your chicks?

No. I never figured out what they were doing in there to cause all that ruckus, but I seriously doubt it was a mouse. Their henhouse is off the ground and sealed up really well at night.
And if one did sneak in during the day, my girls would have attacked and eaten it.

Your girls are big! BUt they probably won't start cooing and cakling like adult chickens for a few more weeks still, sometime around the time their hormones kick in in preparation for laying.

So, just like rushing our human babies to grow up and walk and talk, don't worry about your chicks' voices, just enjoy that cute peeping!
Time goes by even faster for chickens!

Hey twinville, in answer to your question, I am embarrassed to admit that I have had a baby monitor in with them since they moved from the house to the garage. Since our garage is detached from our house, I just really *needed* to make sure they were safe and sound. Now that they're down in the coop, I can flip a switch from my bedroom and hear how they're doing. My husband has put his foot down now, though, about leaving it on overnight. lol :-)
