We are very happy with our two Polish and two Silky chicks. They provide oodles of smiles and entertainment for our family and have integrated into their new chicken family just as well as they have ours.
First up, we have the lovely, prim and proper society lady, Phyllis Diller. The name fits her well for the obvious reason. But she also has a wicked sense of humor, too. She's the only chick who, until today hadn't figured out how to walk into the chicken house at night and instead, perched directly below the door and expected to be picked up and carried inside.

Next up is our man-of-the-coop, and chicken full of attitude and personality, Sid Vicious. We hope he doesn't fall too hard into his rock star character name, but he is already a bit pushy and macho-like. We do think he is quite a handsome fella, though.

And now for the fluff chicks, our two loveable Silkies.
Here's our roo, Cotton. He avoids conflicts with Sid, but is not a pushover either. He enjoys running pell-mell around the coop for his daily exercise. He's the first one of the 4 chicks that figured out how to walk into the chicken house to roost at night. He's a smart one.

Here's a close-up of his bright red wattles and comb.

And last, but certainly not least, is our own little Silky girl, Cloud. Yes, we already have an angora goat with that same name, too, but he's a boy AND he's a goat. So, we are recycling that name because it fits this girl just fine, and hopefully we can keep the goat and chicken separate without too much confusion.
Cloud is a sweet little Silky. She doesn't mind being captured and petted and she prefers to avoid conflict, like Cotton, so everyone in the coop seems to like having her around. Her true personality hasn't really come out yet, but she does seem to prefer hanging out with Sid and Cotton over the snooty Ms. Phyllis. Notice the 5 toes on a silky's foot. Also notice that black skin under the white fluff. These oddities are normal for Silkies and make them quite unique.

Just a little close-up of pretty Ms. Cloud.

I love the title!! :) I think I like Ms. Phyllis has great "hair". Her name suits her. And Ms. Cotten looks sweet. Her toes are neat!
Where else but in the "Chicken Kingdom or Queendom" would you find such characters?
Sounds like you had better luck than I introducing the new chicks to the flock. But I didn't try that hard because a neighbor who is very near and dear to my heart didn't get her chicks that she wanted this year due to the fact that she had to go to England to be with her mother and didn't want to leave a brooder for someone else to take care of. She has a huge farm across the street with the most gorgeous chicken coop around. So I gave her my Speckled Sussex and Light Brahmas with the stipulation that if one turns out to be a rooster she will give me some fertile eggs to hatch out next year. I felt bad because I liked those chicks but this lady did employ my son for years on her farm and was so good to him.
Your new chicks are lovely. It is so fun to have a mixed flock with all the colors to look at. And a few wild hairdos to boot.
They are all adorable. But as for Phyllis, I'm thinking she knew how to walk into the coop, but was just as happy to be picked up and put in as befitting her status as star. After all no one should have to walk all that way up when one could easily be lifted.
Phyllis and Sid are looking more like their namesakes with each picture you post. They just crack me up.
As the Coop Turns! I love it! Let's pitch it to the networks! ;)
Hey, I wanted to tell you that my great-grandma had a Schnauzer that she named "Baby Doll." Her mom's (my g.g. grandma) name was Dolly. And my g.g. aunt got a little chihuahua and named it Dolly. Dolly is a popular name in our family! :) Just wanted to share that, no particular reason.
What beauties! (So is the cute little girl!) I see a chicken calendar in your future. :)
They are so lovely! I better not show these pictures to Logan or we won't end up with any "real" chickens. He loves all these specialty ones.
Hee, hee...don't you just love the comic factor the Polish chickens bring to your flock? Yours are quite stunning and their names fit them *perfectly*!
Your little girl is the perfect person to model them!
It also amazes me that you can find the time to post your creative posts with all the animals you have to care for. I don't nearly have as many, but between them, the garden, the yard, the house, etc...there just isn't enough time in the day lately. Days go by sometimes where I just can't find the time to post, let alone read my fave blogs - and I'm exhausted! (whine, whine). Anyway, I just wanted to say that your energy is an inspiration. I don't know how you do it! :-)
Hi Andrea! Thanks for stopping by and leaving such nice comments abour our silkies and polish chickens.
haha! NM, you're a "royal" crack-up! hehe
Hi Goatgirl,
Thanks for stopping by and leaving such a great comment. I remember about your troubles with integrating your new chickens, which was one of the reasons why I was so nervous about blending mine together. I'm still amazed at how easy and uneventful the entire process has been. They really all do get along and I'm sure grateful for that. Sounds your newer chickens went to a wonderful home. And that's all that matters, right?
I'm glad you like our fancy chickens. They are such fun to watch in the coop.
hahah, GreyHorse! I think you're right! She's getting a little better about it now and following the other fancy chickens into the henhouse before it even gets dark. Maybe that's the key?
lol! 7MSN, Don't they, though? I can't imagine them with any other names. hehe
Hi PonyGirl,
Well, if "Chicken Run" the movie could be made so popular and funny, then why not "As the Coop Turns" hehe!
The name Dolly is a popular name in your family? Your great-grandma had a Schnauzer she named Baby Doll?! Now that's really weird!
My husband's grandmother had an annoying schnauzer that barked all the time, whose name was 'Dolly'. I could barely stand the thing. It peed in the house and got into things, too. It was almsot painful to find out that my first horse's barn name was 'Dolly', which is why I hardly ever call her that and prefer her registered name "Baby Doll".
And you know what else? I'm sure you know who Stacy Westfall is, right? Her well know horse's name is "Wizard's Baby Doll" Well, my married last name is also Westfall and my horse's registered name is "Dakota's Baby Doll"!!
Isn't that cool?! Oh! To be even a little bit like Stacey and her Baby Doll, though!
Hi Wades!
You are just too kind and sweet! Thanks! :)
Hi Christy!
Oh pooh! Let Logan have some fancy fun chickens for his coop. They are 'real' chickens just even more entertaining. They do lay eggs, just not as many or as often. And the Silkies are great because they are well known to go Broody at the drop of the hat. Perfect if you are wanting to hatch out chicks to add to your flock.
Oh...and if you are planning to eat your chickens, I watched a special show recently about the popularity of Silkies as a meat bird in China, Japan and Taiwan. Theyir skin and meat are black...and even their bones! Isn't that cool?!
Hi farmgirl-dk, Thanks for stopping by. It's your fault I decided to add some polish to our flock! haha The Polish and Silkies are just so entertaining.
My daughter just loves her chickens and will be showing them for 4-H at the County Fair and possibly State Fair, too.
Oh and don't give me any credit for super hero energy. haha! I don't deserve it.
I think it's all about priorities and figuring out a schedule that works well for you.
I'll let you in on a secret. I spend all day with my family and our critters. It's what I live for.
And I only go on the computer at night, after 8 pm. I try to read my favorite blogs a little bit each day as I find the time, usually a blog or two a day.
And as far as posting goes,it may seem like I post every day, but what I do is spend one night, a couple times a week where I load up all my photos, and either I add my journaling at the same time, or I add it the day that I decide to post it.
It's nice to have my blog posts set up in a queue like that. Makes blogging easy, quick and fun for me.
I am still trying to decide who is the cutest, your daughter or the chicken...wait, I got it...your daughter wins hands down.
