Madness in Madrid

This will be my last post for a while, my dear family and friends.

You see I'm feeling rather down in the dumps right now because my camera was stolen yesterday while I was in Santa Fe.

How can I blog without a camera? What is a blog without photos? Who'd want to read my photo-less blog?

I learned the hard way this past summer when I ran out of photo space and decided to just post links to photo slideshows on other sites. None of my faithful readers much enjoyed that, though they did care enough to stick around. So I ended up having to buy more photo storage space, because even my concerned husband wanted my photos back on my blog.

But now, without a camera, I'm out of luck....and sad.....and angry and frustrated.

I'm hurt and upset that someone stole my camera. How can they live with themselves?

I think this photo, that I took of an art sculpture in Madrid, portrays just how I feel.

So before I fade away into the Black Hole of Blogdom, I thought I'd share some photos I took while my neighbor friend, Val, and I were exploring Madrid.

This photo makes me smile. Anything involving horses makes me one happy gal, even if it's only a statue, made of metal.
Madrid, population 300, is a unique place in the "Land of Enchantment". Located on the Scenic Turquoise Trail (State Highway 14) between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, Madrid is in the mineral rich Ortiz Mountains and is the oldest coal mining region in New Mexico. (Thanks to my 'model', my handsome 11 yr old son, Jackson, for posing in the following photos)
Beginning in the early 1920's, Madrid miners lit up the winter sky with 150,000 Christmas lights powered by 500,000 kilowatt hours of electricity. The power was provided by the company's own coal fed generators. Madrid's Christmas celebrations ended with W.W.II and the mines closed in the 1950's. Today, Christmas in Madrid has been revived, with main street all lit up, Christmas carolers, Santa and parades. There are many interesting and unique displays all over town that are usually decorated, but also stay up all year to explore and enjoy, too.
Many of the stores and restaurants are located in interesting and unique structures, too. Like this old train car, used as an art gallery.
It's a funky town with bikers mixing with artists, mixing with new agers. Buddhist prayer flags are a common site.
We even stopped to say a few prayers among the fluttering flags. My friend, Val really knows how to make me laugh.
Sometimes we felt like we were being watched......
Maybe there was a hidden camera placed inside this tower? Looks like the aliens have left mysterious markings on that tower for us to decipher. What do you think?

Awwww. Something to make me smile again. Isn't this beautiful?
And this just knocked my socks off. It reminds me of my painted pony, Baby Doll.

And yet again, another movie has been produced in New Mexico. This one was filmed in Madrid a couple years ago and is called Wild Hogs, starring John Travolota, Tim Allen, Martin Lawrence, Bill Macy, and Marissa Tome. Disney built and decorated many structures while filming, including this beautiful diner, "Maggie's".
You can read more about what filming was like from a Madrid resident's perspective.

In some cities you see graffiti. Not so with Madrid. I really like these old painted advertisements on the sides of the buildings.

We took some time out to play while in Madrid. My pal, Val, is a true child at heart. Look at that smile of joy! Don't ya just want to sing? Come on now. Join me!

"He's got the whole world, in His hands. He's got the whole wide world in His hands.....He's got a cutie named Jackson, in His hands...He's got the whole world in His hands!!"
Look! And even the natives have joined in, too. Those Kachina spirits really know how to boogey, don't they?!

But the natives in my heart are still restless and unhappy. My camera is gone. Boo Hoo.

I'm so sorry to hear that some JERK stole your camera :(
Hopefully you'll be able to replace it soon and continue blogging... and in the meantime I hope you stick around to read and comment on your friends's blogs.

Something bad is going around our blogging community. Almost every blogger I know has had bad news in one way, shape or form lately.
Lets hope its done!

So sorry you lost your camera but hey Lisa!!! you sure found lots of things to nice pictures to post anyway! I've found that even during my stay in Sweden, I can blog about things in Africa - both new and old. There are always pictures in the archives that aren't used and who don't get to go up on the web in the heat of the moment. However, when things calm down, you see pictures you didn't notice at first glance, and if you love them, I'm pretty sure your readers will too! You're right, most people don't want to see links but a screenshot of something interesting often does the trick. Don't stop blogging just because someone stole your camera - just invite some friends over (friends with cameras) and ask to post copies of their images!

Warm greetings from West Africa,
Esther

It's too bad about your camera being stolen. What's the matter with people anyway, weren't they ever taught the difference between right and wrong. I'm sure you can still blog, if you don't we'll miss you. We can do without pictures for a while.
Madrid looks like a great place. I'll have to put it on my list of places to visit.
Cheer up and blog anyway.

Oh no! I don't understand how someone can look at someone else's belongings and think I have to have that and then just take it. So sorry this happened to you. Hoping for a new camera for you soon.

So sorry for your loss. I sometimes think the camera has become a member of my family, and I sure would hate to lose it. I hope you find some peace and come back soon--we'll miss you!

Hi Lisa,
It is so sad someone decided to steal your camera.
I keep thinking I am going to have to replace mine soon. It is just about worn out.
I love all the pictures you have today. I really love that stage coach.
Hope you have a good day.

Oh no! How could they, I just don't understand how people can do that and live with themselves like you said :-( some people just weren't raised right I guess.
At least Christmas is right around the corner!

Well that sucks!

I once heard a viewpoint on theft that may help.

This person decided that instead of allowing the thief to have power over him by controlling his feelings about the invasion, he would 'give' the thief the item he stole. In the act of choosing to 'give', he was able to move into a different state of mind that left him feeling less victimized and more powerful.

I hope you don't let this unfortunate incident affect too many areas of your life, including the enjoyment you derive from blogging.

Much Love & Big Hugs,
Carolynn

I'm so sorry your camera was stolen! That is awful. Don't stay gone too long, even without pictures I love reading about your adventures!

Oh Lisa, that stinks. It seems like the criminal element is everywhere.
You have always been an interesting blogger with or without photos. (I do love the pics though)
I love how when you talk about a place, you actually put in facts and history. (too much work for this lazy blogger)
I hope it doesn't take long to get a replacement camera, I will miss your story telling.
I did enjoy the time you went back through your pictures and posted random things around your farm. (hint hint)
I hope you are feeling better soon, it is easy to let the bad overwhelm, just know the good in the world outnumbers the bad.
love

Lisa-
I am sorry that someone stole your camera. You will just have to run out and get a new, albeit inexpensive one, just like I did!

Guess what I got today, and it brought a huge smile to my face, and touched a little piece of my heart??? Your package!!!!!

How cool of you to think of the kidlets, and I love all of the NM memorabilia. Of course though, I LOVE the picture of Bo the most!
It looks just like him, complete with the gate, fence, and trees!!!

Thank you so much, Lisa!!! What a kind gesture! :) I will now stalk you forever (just joking...lol!!!).

About the pictures on this post...only in NM can you find that kind of artwork. I am so jealous!!!

Please continue to visit our blogs, and I will come visit you even if there are no pictures, so please blog about anything that is really cool, which is pretty much every thing that you and your kidlets do!

Melanie said...

One more thing!!! Can I post a picture of your drawing on my blog?? If you are uncomfortable with it, I won't, but I would love to show everyone your incredible likeness of Bo Bo. :)

Hey there Lisa - I'm sorry to hear about your camera being stolen. Some people are just desperate, I guess and don't have respect for other people or their belongings. Please don't stop blogging just because you have to take a leave of absence from all the picture taking!! I'm just getting to know you and appreciate your thoughts even more than your photos - although the New Mexico landscapes are beautiful! Don't let that thief rob you of something you love! Cameras are easily replaced!!
They are just - well, you know a camera...**hugs**

Celeste said...

Lisa,
So sorry about your camera, that was very mean spirited of someone. You now you can get disposable digital cameras now if you get really desperate! I would write a nice letter to Santa if were you, I am sure he will work on replacing your camera :)

I am sorry to know that you no longer have your camera. Your photos are always a treat, but remember please that you are more than just your photos. Your blog writing shows your spirit and personality and we come here for that as much as your photos. I've been using the same cheap little digital camera I got "free" with my Visa credit card points about 4 years ago. It works fine for blogging photos. Go find yourself a suitable replacement camera to brighten your day and make yourself happy again. You deserve it.

Hi Lisa, I am SO sorry to hear about your stolen camera!

Theft seems to be rampant these days, a friend of mine even had her dogs Search and Rescue vest that she had worn from the beginning and had so many memories attached stolen from her truck (as well as her wallet and they charged over $500 before she was able to get home and call to put a stop on her cards!).

I'm willing to bet you have a friend that lives closer than me that could loan you a camera until you buy a new one. If not I agree with everyone else, don't stop blogging! I would miss my daily dose!!

Nuzzling Muzzles said...

That really burns me up. If anyone ever made good use of a camera and deserves to have dozens of cameras, it is you.

My husband and I once had our Christmas presents stolen when we were out of work and living in a motel room. We were in 18-degree below zero temps, and most of our presents were warm clothes and jackets. I know that you spend a lot of time thinking about the thief and what would drive him/her to be so selfish and uncaring. Probably drug money.

It's very sad that your camera is stolen. Very sad. Nevertheless you've made a joyful photo show with remarkable elements. Perhaps you can buy a cheap camera ? those often have attractive characteristics, like photos made with a cell phone.

I'm sorry about your camera. Mine was stolen in Vegas so I know how you feel. I had pictures on the memory card and it gave me the creeps to think of someone looking at them. My camera was covered under my homeowners insurance so I was able to get a new one.
Don't quit blogging though. You still have a lot to say!

GreyWolf said...

I am sorry for your loss of a camera, but please don't let that stop you until you get a replacement. The visuals are great to build a story around but the story is what is important.
Most books don't have pictures but people read them anyway.
the camera thief took enough, don't let him take this too.
If you feel you can't blog without a camera then I will send you my old one to use until you can get a new camera. Just email me your address at gary-dillon@hotmail.com

Lisa, I love your words even more than your great pictures. If you have something to say, I expect a post on that day.

You're part of my day.

PS: There's a special place in Hell for people who are thieves.

Oh dear.. Lisa... I'm sorry about your sad day of the camera being stolen. It's almost like losing your best friend, isn't it?
I have had my camera stolen before and it really feels like a part of you has been violated because it is a window to your soul....
but I feel that good things will happen and soon you will be back... I just know it but meanwhile, I love love love how you write... please come back and tell us stories, I would love to hear some!!

Hey you!
You don't need to post this one, but I wanted to tell you that my kidlets were THRILLED when they got home and saw the picture of Bo, and that they got something as well!!!

Eric wanted to see your blog, and after looking at it, gave you his stamp of approval (Eric can be one of those hard kids to win over)!

He promptly asked when we were either visiting or moving to NM to see you...lol!!! Oh...and now he wants to try Letterboxing. I will have to look into that link and see what they have around here. :)

You know, Lisa...if it was stolen out of your car it will probably be covered under you auto insurance, and if not your homeowners. You might want to look into it!

Don't let some low-life scumbag take both your camera AND your blogging away! I really enjoy your blogs--the information and stories you put up are dead fascinating. Where will I go for blog-schooling if you aren't blogging????

Give us your words, girl!

These are nice pictures! Nice post, altogether. I LOVE that painting that looks like Baby Doll! So pretty!

That is HORRIBLE that your camera was stolen!!! HOW?!!! NOOO! How will I live without your blog?! :-( !!!!

Fear Not. What is not real, never was and never will be. What is real, always was and cannot be destroyed.

You are a great blogger, the camera will be replaced.... in the meantime use your talents to continue to blog without it. Use images online that you can give credit to by mentioning the blogs or websites of whence they came.

Give to others in this time of loss, you will gain much by doing so and your loss will not feel so great.

Sending positive thoughts and energy your way....

Gosh you guys! You all are so darned nice, I hardly know what to say. I've been feeling really down about my camera and you've managed to lift up my spirits, by telling me that you like my blog with or without photos, and you like my writing, too.

And by telling me not to give up faith and by suggesting that I could either buy or borrow a temporary camera now and that Christmas is so close that I should let Santa know.

Michelle, from Galloping Grace Youth Ranch (go check her blog out. She's amazing) has even been so sweet to offer to start a fundraising event to raise money for a new camera for me. (And although I'm am greatly touched by such generosity, it is not necessary. I know it will all work out just fine. But thank you....and huge smooches from me!!)

Oh, and I also like the idea of using archive photos or some extra photos that I've not used yet, which I do have actually. That's a clever idea. Or borrowing photos online.

You have all been so uplifting and encouraging, too. I appreciate it more than you all could ever know.

As for the insurance part, I can't claim it because it didn't happen in my car and it's partly my fault. I accidentally left my camera sitting on a bench and when I went back a few minutes later, it had been stolen.
We drove back to that bench several times that day, just hoping someone would feel guilty and put my camera back where I'd left it, but alas, honesty and good morals didn't prevail that day. :(

Thank you to all of you who cared enough about me and my little blog to comment. I'm so grateful to have such wonderful bloggy friends.
And I promise not to just disappear into the Black Hole of Blogdom after all.

I'll be using some of your interesting and clever ideas to add some new twists to my blog instead.

****HUGS to you all!!***

~Lisa

I'm glad you changed your mind about dropping into the black hole - it's not pretty down there. Now, Madrid - that 's another story - I've always wanted to go there. These are great pictures. I'm sure you've got some other wonderful shots in your archives and we'll be looking forward to seeing them. And Christmas is coming, so maybe Santa could make an early visit to your house.
