It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

But it turned out not to be such a great idea after all.

IMG_5309

Yep. That’s my GMC Van. Stuck in the mud. In a ditch. I always drive this way home, but never after a heavy rain. Except we rarely get heavy rains, and so….I never had the opportunity before to drive this road after a heavy rain. hah!

I was driving home from taking my daughter to her T-Ball game. (I’ll post about that soon. It was a fun game….and her team, The Pink Ponies won!) We had not one lick o’ rain out on the eastern plains, but once we drove into the mountains, I could see that the roads were wet with even a few puddles here and there. But it didn’t occur to me that my short-cut road could be dangerously slippery. And I often forget that my van doesn’t have 4-wheel drive. hah!

The drive started out smooth enough…and then…….SLIP…..SLIDE……and WHOMP! I fell into the ditch.

IMG_5311

As we slid into the ditch, the vision of my van flipping over flashed into my head, as the van rocked to a final stop. The thought crossed my mind that I’d land on my left side, the same side as my injured knee. Would this be my ‘Third Strike’? Thankfully, a vehicle proved safer for me, than my horse, and the van stayed upright.

I called Ranchman John, whose truck does have 4-wheel drive, and because I was only 5 minutes from home, he was there quickly. My heart sunk, though, when I first saw him at the top of the hill, as he slid right off the road and into a ditch.

I grabbed my camera, thinking, well, if anything this could be kind of exciting, and maybe even blog worthy! hah!

IMG_5312

(Those tire tracks you see on the road above, aren’t from my hubby, but from someone else who tried driving on this road before I did. You can see that they zigged and zagged quite a bit, too!)

Once Ranchman John switched on his 4-wheel drive, he did much better on the slippery road. But there were still a few zigs.

IMG_5320

(That road up the hill, with the two cars, is a paved road. Those people in those cars…….they were probably laughing at us, calling us crazy, for even trying to drive on that road after it rained. Or maybe they were watching and learning. Hey! Maybe I saved someone else from making the same mistake. hah! Makes me feel a little better believing they weren’t laughing at me.)

Oh! I was so happy when he finally made it to where I was, still stuck in the ditch. ‘A sight for sore eyes’ is an understatement!

IMG_5324

Ranchman John was originally thinking about pulling my van out of the ditch from the front. I didn’t think that would be such a good idea….thanks to my ‘visions of doom’ that flashed through my head…..oh…..and physics.

IMG_5325

(Oh yeh. I bet you’re wondering why I’m on the hill and not helping? Well, I was a wee bit traumatized. And my twinlings were there, too, and very eager to help out. What big little men, eh? I will tell you that it was quite a struggle to get up there on that muddy hill, using a crutch and a bionic leg brace, with 3” of thick mud on my sandles…and squishing between my toes, trying to help my 6 yr old daughter, who was very upset about getting her shiny white sneakers covered in mud.)

But we cowgirled up and stood up there on that muddy hill, while it started to sprinkle, and watched the story unfold. Jem, my other twinling son, even gave his hoodie to his sister because the rain was so cold and all she had on was a short sleeve shirt. He’s a sweet boy and a wonderful big brother. *grin*

IMG_5327

(Oh. Did I forget to mention that my twinling, Jax was behind the wheel. And he’s only 12? And he doesn’t know how to drive…..unless you count driving a John Deere tractor. But you gotta start ‘em out with Driver’s Ed sometime, right? He had a ‘crash’ course…….get it?….crash……uh, I know that was bad. lol!)

But except for a few tense moments where Jax kept turning the wheel in the wrong direction or not straight, which caused the van to slip deeper into the ditch, he did a stellar job, and he was a huge help in getting the van unstuck. Jax even learned how to operate the brakes……all on his own. (or there may have been some bumper-to-bumper contact, too. gah!)

IMG_5328

IMG_5330

(Yep. Jax stopped just in time, but unfortunately the back tire drove over the tow rope. But they got unstuck with no problems, except for getting themselves all muddy, that is.)

IMG_5335

Then they drove Jenna and I to the other end of the road, in the truck, while they walked back to the van.

IMG_5338

They did get the van backed all the way up (It’s a rear wheel drive and does better in reverse) to the end of that road. And Ranchman John was kind enough to drive my van back home, while I drove the truck. (I love me a good truck! A 4-wheel drive is definitely on my wish-list. hah!)

Well after the craziness of my last 6 months, I think Train Wreck may have to let me borrow her nickname. Sheesh! Ok. I’ve had enough ‘excitement’ to last me a very long, long, long time. gah!

I don’t think any of you will mind if I partake of a little ‘liquid courage’ or ‘liquid calm’ right about now. Because this glass of Sangria sure looks good, don’t you agree?

(A glass of wine followed by a cup-of-tea shooter……..bliss.)

Yikes! That NM earth makes for some treacherous driving!! I'm glad you don't have heavy rains too often (and I'm REALLY glad your van stayed upright and your knee didn't take another hit). Well, I guess you have to have some downside to all that beauty around you!!! Ah, yes, that glass of Sangria looks wonderful!!:)

Wow so glad you are all safe. You should be very very grateful that your ditches aren't as steep as ours!
Tell RJ that I like his truck :)

We have driven on snot slick roads up hunting in south central WA. So slick that all you could do was ride the ruts down the hill! And absolutely no chance of making it back up the hill LOL Thank god for 4x4s!!! LOL

Reminded me of driving through the snows in Tundra Country. Oh suuuure, I'd think- theres just a tiny bit of snow on that road. We should be Fiiiiine... what I didnt know was that tiny bit of snow covered up the freaking ICE!!

You did know the right time to call. I would have stomped in mud, tried to get myself out, run into the other ditch and THEN called for help!

1.secure from liability to harm, injury, danger, or risk: a safe place.
2.free from hurt, injury, danger, or risk: to arrive safe and sound.

You have some true gentlemen there. Sometimes I feel like I wear the pants in my family since I'm usually the one solving problems for everyone else. I can't wait to hear about Jenna's T-ball game.

Amazing! I have to say I've never drove on a muddy road and never would have guessed it would be that slick. Quite an adventure!

We have pretty solid ground here. I can't say I have had exactly the same experience in the mud but man in the winter you better watch your butt in the snow and on the curbs. Black ice is bad around here.

That wine class is pretty. I love pretty glass things.

Getting stuck is always such fun, isn't it. Good thing you weren't far from home and help arrived quickly. Glad you all made it out in one piece.

Oh my, when I first opened your blog and saw your van stuck, my first thought was "oh my goodness, she had to get out and walk with her bad knee!" Yea! Hubby to the rescue. Glad it all worked out.

When I lived in Louisiana, the mud was exactly like that also. Here in NM We have those kinds of roads all over the state.

The Paul Simon tune comes to mind... "slip sliding away" :-) Glad you and your daughter didn't get hurt.

That is some slippery mud! Geesh!
I love 4-wheel drive trucks, will never be without one!
Looks like the twinlings had fun helping out! It's never to early to teach them to drive!

I'm glad ya'll got out okay.
I love reading your blog because you make even annoying situations seem funny!!!! Hope all is going well - I read the post about your Dr. Appt - sooooo sorry the news wasn't better but sooooo relieved it wasn't worse - like retearing the ACL. UGH - that would be bad.

The mud wasn't deep, the road looks well-cambered and clean, and the ditch quite shallow; so I'm guessing that when it rains, you get some seriously slick, greasy mud!

Lucky that nothing TOO dramatic happened! Do be careful, and watch out for yerself!

Nothing better than gooey mud between your toes :) lol If that were me personally, (I'm sure my vehicle WOULD have been upside down) I would have just said screw it and came back when it dried up a little. lol Thats a nice truck you have there too. Just looking at that road, I would have drove down it too, it really didn't look all that bad. Looks can definitely be deceiving.

Sheesh!! You have been the Mad Poster lately. Get it?? Mad Poster instead of Mad Hatter??? I crack myself up...lol!!!!

I bet that GMC and Ranchman John never looked so good, did they??? :) I also just finished reading about that darn knee of yours, and I am so sorry that it just doesn't want to behave. It's like you have one idea and your knee has another.....

Ah well...you shall persevere, right? You always do. :)

Neat! If it wasn't an official road I'd be calling the boys in for some mud racing!! Ahhh yes I can smell the mud baking on to exhaust now.....

I would be having a little liquid courage too!

Awesome stuff taking a bummer situation and turning it into a good post. I'm all about that! Love it.

I'm sure your son learned a lot from that excursion.
