Billy the Kid spent quite a bite of time causing mayhem in Lincoln, NM. The town boasts a museum dedicated to this outlaw and has many historical buildings lining the only road in the town. Many are linked closely with Billy the Kid and the controversies that surrounded him wherever he went.
Many of the towns in this part of the state have some sort of story to tell regarding the Kid. The town of Corona, NM would have been about a two day ride north of Lincoln. We drove right through Corona on the way to Lincoln, but it only took us about an hour and half with our mechanical horse-power.
This is an historic marker located right outside the west side of Corona, NM. Please tell me I’m not the only one who loves to pull off whenever I see one of these, to read and learn about the history of the area?
The town of Lincoln has many markers and placards like these, most having to do with Billy the Kid.
There are also many unique western buildings and structures to visit and explore.
This is the courthouse where the big shoot-out occurred. It now houses the Sheriff’s Office upstairs and a museum downstairs.
If you recall my previous post about White Oaks, you’ll remember seeing the gravestone of the sheriff, J.W, Bell. He was shot behind the Courthouse. (we found a letterbox hidden nearby)
You can drive through the town in less than 5 minutes, but there are fascinating things to see and discover if you just park and walk through the town instead.
Isn’t this cute? I’d love to live here.
Just next door, Col. Dudley’s Camping Place.
Isn’t this Ellis & Son’s Store a fascinating structure? Reminds me a Hobbit House. It serves as a Bed & Breakfast now.
I hope you enjoyed the photo tour of Lincoln, NM. I had fun sharing it with you. Next post will showcase a few of the ‘Ghosts of Lincoln”, so please come by again if you enjoy old dwellings and imagining what life was like for those who lived there.

And just a little update on Mare Watch.
Val, two of my kids, and I sacked out in the barn again last night.
This is the third night for me and the kids in the tent, and several of you have mentioned that it must be so uncomfortable to sleep on the ground. Well, it is…and it it isn’t. The tent sits on flat plywood, so there are no lumps and bumps, and we are all using foam camping pads under our sleeping bags. And I am using two cushions off of my sofa (hah!)
So, I have to admit I’m pretty dang cozy at night. The wind blowing outside reminds us of ocean waves, the barn noises, and horse sounds are a little odd and take some getting used to, but for the most part we all seem to sleep really well at night and look forward to our barn camp-outs.
And in the morning we munch on donuts, sip coffee, tea and apple cider and enjoy “Tent & Breakfast” or “Breakfast in Bag”, served up with a smile!
As for Annie and her progress, last night and this morning she has been fidgety, with lots of tail swishing (without any flies at all to bother her), biting at her sides, pacing, taking a long time to eat, and doing lots of long deep sighing. Her udder is firm and full. I barely touched her teats and milk dripped onto my hand.
If she foals today, it wouldn’t be the best for the baby because it’s really cold and windy. Temps have barely risen above 55 degrees, and night time will be even colder. The sky is cloudy and threatening to rain, too. But if Annie does deliver her foal, maybe she won’t mind if we tuck it into our sleeping bags with us tonight?

Can't wait !
I am going to start doing the letterboxing thing soon as well. IM sure my husband who teaches survival would LOVE it.
That baby needs to hurry up!
I am SOOO enjoying road tripping with you! Thanks for sharing the pictures. What neat, neat places! I am going to surprise you and Val sometime and head down your way! So unlike anything around here!
Annie needs to old out until Thursday! That's my baby pool day!

One more comment... you pictures show such vibrant colors. What setting are you using? Are you doing any Photo Shopping or is it straight out of the camera? I'm still playing with mine. I photo shop but then when I publish, they look dark. I'm thinking perhaps my monitor just makes me think I should photo shop, but I should just leave them alone!
Most on my blog are with my small Canon. Still playing around with the new S10.
Billy the Kids' real name is William Henry McCarty. William Bonney was just an alias that he used.
Great pictures. It's a neat little town.
Thanks for sharing.
Dan
Yes, Dan that is partially true.
Some believe that his father's name, was William, so they tacked that on to the front of his name, but in reality Billy the Kid was born on 11/23/1859 as Henry McCarty but he was also known by the aliases Henry Antrim and William H. Bonney.
William Bonney is the name that the Kid preferred to use during his 'heyday' and is better known with that alias.
There is still so much mystery and controversy surrounding that interesting young man's life...and even death. :)
I find it fascinating, don't you?

Love western history like that. Funny, I had just thought I should post on my blog a historical marker not far from me, where a trading post was. Loved this post.
I totally want to live there! Thanks for the tour!
I'm betting it's tonight on foal watch. Can't wait to see!!
I get Billy the Kid and Jesse James mixed up, I'll have to look 'em up.
If I didn't have to get up and go to the office the next morning, I would so love camping in the barn waiting for Annie to foal. Why do you need the tent? Because it is cold, and windy?
I just love coming to your site! You always have something fun and ineresting. Love the buildings and the colors. Can't wait for the new baby to arrive!!!
Hi Joanna,
Yes, because it is chilly and windy, but that's only part of it. The barn is a dirt floor, so it's very dusty in there, and when a gust of wind seeps under the door, the dust goes flying! You should see the top of my tent....covered in dust. lol!
Oh....and there are mice in the barn sometimes...and maybe even snakes...oh and spiders. gah!
A tent is a good precaution against critters crawling and slitering on us at night. hehe!

hey there ms. lisa. wonderful tour of lincoln...so enjoyed it and as i said in a prior post i've been all over new mexico but, never really stopped in at these smaller towns.
your photographs excellent and the commentary wonderful.
have a lovely evening.
hugs always
I love travelling the Country with you!! I am so curious about, and love ghost towns, stories, and old towns like the ones you blog. No, you are not the only one who stops to read the historical signs, although we don't have them here in Thailan, and if we do, not in English!
Goodness that mare is big isn't she. Shouldn't be long now, that or shes going to explode.
Very interesting tour! Great pictures too.
Mare watch... can't wait to see the little one!u
Great tour again! cool stuff!
And waiting to see this cute baby!!
Sounds like you'll be in the tent again tonight! I think that would be fun. Hopefully you don't sleep through the foaling! Could you imagine? I am sure there would be quite a bit of noise to wake you up!
Val is so sweet to bring you coffee in the morning!
Thanks for another tour. Loved the pictures again! Such beautiful places!
Love stories about old towns! I feel really stupid asking this but I have never heard of it, what is letter boxing?
We just went to Ruidoso this last weekend. I've been through Lincoln I don't know how many times and have never stopped. We are usually on our way to Capitan. Great pictures!
Thanks for the tours of your state. I live around some cool old Texas towns and should do the same.
And sleeping on the couch cushions is just my style. No roughing it for this gal.
Bill had kin here in southwest VA, Tazewell County, and there are records of his hiding out...I mean 'visiting' his family here.
Great mare photos!
Thanks for the History Tour. I love exploring old historical places. Thank you for sharing a place with me that I'll probably never be able to visit.
I am familiar with most of this history but you have made it real for me. Thanks for the tour.
Still looking for that wax - of course some mares will foal without waxing over - most do not.
When you see that wax, you'll now it's near....
Oh how I'd like to visit Lincoln,NM, your pictures tell a wonderful story. We had lunch in Las Cruzas once at a spot that Billie the Kid once frequented. :):) Good Luck to Annie!
Lisa, I know you got a laugh out of my misselling of Las Cruces. :):)
I'll say it again--you should be getting paid by NM Tourism for your work! I live here and am intrigued.
Can't believe she didn't foal on my guess. The nerve of that plump horse!!
i'll ask too, are those colors accurate? your photos are always so ultra vibrant!
what fun to sleep in the barn in a bug-free environment, with the couch cushions, and wake up to val's coffee/cider. sweet!
i'll have to set up a tent so i can be with baasha all night. a tent is necessary cuz of all the bugs here!

Lisa,
Thanks for the great post - what a fascinating place, so much history, I would love to visit it an imagine how life used to be.
That is very exciting news about Annie, hopefully your next post will be a special 'birth announcement!' :)
I also am glad to be sharing your trip. I have been learning alot and really enjoying the pictures.
Lol, I like how they spelled his name "Duputy" on that first historic sign.
Thanks for the photo tour of Lincoln and Capitan, although I am jealous. I wanted to go down there!
So, it's been 4 nights for each of us now. When is this foal coming??
Annie now has a swollen back leg from the pregnancy. She doesn't seem to be eating as much but she is still eating. Also, she stands with her head hanging low a lot of the time. Poor Mama!!
You've done it again..posting yet another great roadtrip with awesome pictures. And then another night in the B&B in the barn! What more could a girl ask for? All Annie needs now is a good thunderstorm.
Now that is a cool little town!
