I was totally planning on taking some photos of brilliant white fluffy clouds back-dropped against our bright blue New Mexico skies for this week’s challenge, but then a unique opportunity revealed itself to me instead.
Last Saturday, we’d had a busy day beginning in the early morning. That evening there were fireworks scheduled for the Edgewood Route 66 Celebration, but my kids and I were too tired and lazy to go. But I also realized that sometimes we are able to watch fireworks going on in Edgewood from my bedroom balcony.
So, that night as we watched the fireworks above the ridge across from our valley the sky above the mountain ridge turned red. For a moment I was worried that the fireworks caused a fire. But I soon realized what had caused the sky to turn red.
It was the moon!
A red-tinged moon…and what were the chances that the moon would rise in the exact same location that the fireworks were being set off?! What an awesome, unique, and rare photographic opportunity!
And there were wispy clouds covering the moon, too.
Please keep in mind that the fireworks were being set off about 3 miles from our house, as the crow flies, and I only use a little point and shoot digital camera (Canon Powershot SX110 IS), so the photos are not as sharp as they might be with one of the fancy professional style cameras. I’m still very pleased with what I was able to capture in just a couple minutes, using only my auto setting with a porch light on behind me, no tripod and no flash.
As the moon rose higher, the red color faded to orange and then to yellow.
And still, the fireworks were sent up to decorate this beautiful moon as if celebrating it’s stunning arrival. I felt very privileged to be able to witness such a rare and unique event. I think I forgot to breathe a few times, actually.
And even after the fireworks had ended and the moon had risen much higher above the mountain ridgeline, it was still quite spectacular to see with the long, thin clouds seeming to slide across it’s surface.
I’m thinking that sometimes being lazy and deciding to stay home, can work out really well. What do you think?

very interesting shots Lisa. I love em.
Fabulous! Just fabulous! Definitely a unique opportunity.
You weren't kidding about them being full of fireworks! That's very cool with the clouds in front of the moon.
Really cool photos!
Amazing shots! I'm always surprised at how much better your camera does with telephoto shots than my little Canon Powershot A470, so I looked them up and mine has a 3.4x zoom, yours has a 10x zoom - big difference! Those are fantastic shots, other photographers might have driven all over the countryside trying to line those up!
Absolutely, totally, completely, love these!!!!!
Excellent! I love the different "take" on them. Well done!
Hi Lisa--Don't know what has happened but as of a few days ago I can't see any of your pictures (!), I only see the image number...? Is anyone else having this problem or is it my system?--Sage
This is my main blog.
Lisa, these are all magnificent shots! I do like to use my point and shoot camera, it is worry free and most of the time, they have great results like yours! Congratulations.
What unique photographs you got. I've never seen anything like it.
Lisa, these are wonderful. Great shots, and a very interesting combination....you should be proud of yourself. Loved this!

I was breathless just looking at your photos!
I love that first pic.
We had a red moon a few weeks ago. Any idea what causes that? My bro-in-law said it was due to forest fires.
Pretty cool.
Well done.

WOW, incredible pictures, very nice moon! I've never seen a red moon around here! :-P :)
wow, what a catch Lisa. Can't believe you are using an inexpensive camera.
Those are excellent and eerie!
I'm totally with you on not going to fireworks. I love to watch them, but I don't like going with the massive crowds on the 4th of July to watch. I usually attempt to send the hubby and kids by themselves. lol
Gorgeous pictures of the moon. How neat that it seemed to change colors like that.
Beautiful Lisa!!! Look at the colors!!! Timing is everything...well done!
Those pics are awesome!
