After much thought and consideration we decided to find a new home for Pepper and his pal, Moon Pie. It was a very, very difficult decision and we are already missing them.
But we did manage to find them an excellent new home with animal lovers that have provided a wonderful home to several dogs, rabbits and horses.
Between the cost of feed, the time it takes me to take good care of all of our animals (hoof trims, worming, feeding, attention, grooming), and the fact that with Ranchman John now on the road full-time as Trucker John, all of the animal care, kidlet care, homeschooling and housework is solely on me and I find that I don’t have enough hours in the day, or energy, to keep up.
So we based our decision on which critters are giving back or paying their own way on our little ranch. Dogs and cats are exempt, of course. Any critters that give us eggs, wool or milk are safe. We had a total of five goats, two sheep, two llamas and one horse. Luna, the angora goat gives me mohair fleece, and the sheep give me wool. The llamas not only give me fleece, but they both guard our little flock and they are trained to pack and join me for hikes.
Mud Pie, our rescued Nigerian wether has a home here as long as we have Latte our Miniature Dairy Goat because they are best friends. And Baby Doll has a home here as a pasture pet because I can’t imagine not having her whinny and come to the gate whenever she sees me, so unless I find her the perfect home, she’s here to stay.
Pepper was a rescue situation almost 2 years ago and he was the first choice, but after we found him a new home, we discovered that the new owners didn’t have any other goats, though they were planning on adopting one or two more goats very soon. Moon Pie is Pepper’s best buddy, so it just made sense to offer Moon Pie, too. And that way we knew that Pepper and Moon Pie would have each other to support one another through the changes of moving to a new home and environment. Pepper’s new owners were thrilled to have Moon Pie, too.
Over the weekend, we drove up to Santa Fe to drop off Pepper and Moon Pie to their new home. It was important for us to see what sort of environment they’d be living in and we were happy to see that their new owners had set up a very large pen with a covered area, next to their two horses and two boarder’s horses.
They plan to build a special goat shelter for the winter, too. They also showed me the horse arena that the boys would be allowed to exercise in and eat weeds with the horses. Most of the time Pepper and Moon Pie will be in a large yard attached to their artist studio, and since the new owners work from home, Pepper and Moon Pie will always have human companionship, too.
C. is a talented artist and we were thrilled to be given a tour of her studio and some of her artwork.
We will greatly miss Pepper and Moon Pie. They were the loudest of our goats and also the biggest eaters. But they were also goofy and sweet. Their new owners invited us to stop by anytime that we’d like to check in on the boys. And they’ve already sent us updates via e-mail with beautiful, artistic photos of Pepper and Moon Pie, so it’s reassuring to know that they are settling in to their new home as much-loved family pets.
Farewell Pepper and Moon Pie!

That's a lovely new home! No wonder you are both sad and happy at the same time! What kind of dog do the new owners have, by the way?
Oh I'm so sorry for you!! I know how heart breaking it is when we have to part with our beloved animals...It sounds like you found Pepper and Moon Pie a great home though, and I'm glad they will keep contact and let you know how they are doing!!
Glad to hear they got a good home..:-))
Onward Pepper and MoonPie! Fun changes await! New people, new smells, new friends. Lots of love!
Sounds like a good decision, and a very good home!
I think the hardest part of being without the hubby is having to take care of the animals. If anything goes wrong you are on your own and that is never easy. I was so lucky when my first horse passed away that it was on a weekend and he was home because I was in no shape to be on my own at the period of time. You do learn how to deal but it never is easy. Take Care lisa!
Oh, Lisa, so sorry about having to give up some of your furry kids but it sounds like you found them a wonderful home! And as you said they are together so it wouldn't be so hard on them and they will have humans around all the time too. A wonderful home indeed!!!
hugs to you...

I so enjoyed finding your blog and reading about Pepper and Moon Pie this morning.. so sorry that had to go but glad that it's going to work out for everybody. The music you have on your playlist is awesome!! Some of the songs I haven't heard and I'm a new fan.
It's kinda funny how I happened here this morning.. I was checking my own site's statistics-and someone had visited me by a google search for "moon pies" (I had written a post a while back about an article with that phrase in it). So I checked google myself to see what else that reader might've come across... and I saw your site on the google results.
Love finding great unexpected smiles this way in the early morning hours.
Cheers and hugs for this Tuesday :)
I know it was hard, but you did the right thing. When you start to feel overwhelmed and financially strapped, it's time to find new homes.
It's great that you found them such a great home!!!
Thank you so much Lisa for loving those boys enough to find them another good home! I always worry that someone will mistreat them but I am happy to know that MoonPie is going to be loved by someone new! I don't have the boys' sister anymore - I sold her to a WONDERFUL couple out in the canyon as a milk/show goat but I have her daughter (Moonpie and Mudpie's niece) and I adore her.
You are such a caring sweet person!
I know it is hard to part with your beloved critters but sometimes you have to make hard decisions for your situation!
I know how hard it was for you two give up Pepper and Moon Pie. But you made a wise decision, and I am so glad to hear they got a wonderful home. Look forward to some pictures as updates in their new home. They have become part of the blogger family!
Sorry you had to, but so glad you were able to find them good, loving home!
awww, but I understand and it sure looks like they have gone to a great home.
That's such a hard decision for you to make...but, their new home looks wonderful! They have a beautiful place and "C" has a smile that shows a generous heart.
Sorry to hear you had to give up a couple, but your reasoning is sound. It's just the way the economy is right now :( Seems like it's effecting everyone and everything. Since I'm down to just chickens (and dogs and cats) I know what you mean.
I'm sorry you had to find them new homes, but I'm glad you found them a good one.
Its great you had such an opportunity to find another good home for them! I know what you mean about cutting back on the chores, 3 horses is going to be a lot for me with the kids all gone or in college. I still havnt figured out what to do, and old horses are a lot harder to rehome, especially when they are lame.
Lisa - I left you somewhat of an answer to your question on my post yesterday - thanks for commenting!
lisa, bless your heart! i know your 'beloveds' will be all right. ~~~you have a charming family up there, lovely children!
I am sorry to hear that you had to find new homes for Pepper and Moon Pie, but sounds like they are in a wonderful new home. It is always hard to have to give up a beloved pet!
Sounds like it is a win-win situation for everyone involved. Even for Pepper and Moon Pie. I live it when the new owners always say come and visit anytime. It makes it easier.
I'm glad you were able to find them a good home. It's tough giving away animals.
It's hard to keep everything going with two adults, let alone one. Glad you found a good home for the guys!
Just catching up on my favorite blogs and saying "hi". Thanks for stopping by. Always good to hear from you!
Lisa..isn't it always a relief when you know you found a good home for one of the critters. All looks like it will be well with them both!
Farewell is always sad but they seem to be in the perfect place.
Giving up Pepper and Moon Pie was an unselfish act. Well done.
Dan
I was wondering how you could do it all. You have a lot of responsibility with your lifestyle. It looks like they went to a great home and will be well-cared for.
It is always so hard to give a pet to someone else's care...lot of guilt involved. However, All 3 of the cats we have had have been "adopted" from my daughter. Our last adoption Suzy Q ( my husband changed her name to one HE liked) adores her new home and especially her new dad!!! If she was still with my daughter she would have a 3 and 2 year old chasing and pulling her tail with a 5 month old soon to join them. Timing was right for everyone concerned! Oliver, the fisrt cat we "adpoted" from her is going on 19 years old!!!
So...I believe your gaots will be loved by their new family a bunch!!!
It's never an easy thing to say goodbye to friends, but I think you did a great job in finding them a great home!
Don't be too sad as they embark on the rest of their lives - be happy for them!
Sorry to hear you had to get rid of those two, but they evidently will have a good home. I hope that the lessening of work you have to do helps.
Oh...sad. But knowing it will be a good home and for the best of all involved...happy!
It's always hard to say goodbye to a beloved pet, but finding such a wonderful home kinda makes it a little easier. I have a horse for sale and I only want him to go to a great home. My husband could care less where he goes as long as he gets paid for him, but I am a bit pickier! I am glad they have such a nice home!
