Happy New Year and New Beginnings!

Happy New Year from the Critter Crew!!

(The day before Christmas Eve we got almost 10” of snow!)

New Year's Resolution:

a promise that you make to yourself to start doing something good or stop doing something bad on the first day of the year.

I prefer to call them goals to take some of the pressure off. I make goals all year long. And they sometimes change or morph into different sorts of goals, too. This time last year, getting back up on my horse was the very last thing on my mind, and I had even considered selling her on many occasions (and still might if the perfect buyer came along).

But getting back up on my horse became very important to me, over the past 6 months. If I had gotten back up on any other horse, it wouldn’t have meant nearly as much. Nor would it have helped me to conquer my fear or build my self-confidence. I could have slain any dragon, but I had to slay the dragon that burnt me. Know what I mean?

How about you? Have you made some new important goals this year? Or are you working on goals you made last year?

I don’t like to make too many goals for myself either. Then it’s just too difficult to meet or conquer any of them. And I also don’t make goals that are too lofty. In my mind that just makes it too easy for me to talk myself out of tackling them.

All that said, I have made a few goals for myself this new year:

1. To spend even more time with my kids and husband having fun together and doing things we enjoy. (Unlike my parents’ focus, I know that life is too short to worry about dried mud smears on the tile floor, fingerprints on the glass, soap scum in the tub, and dust bunnies. 100 years from now, none of that will matter, and we’ll all become dirt and dust anyway.)

2.To find our 300th Letterbox. (We’re at 249 now)

3.To learn how to hook up and tow our horse trailer on my own.

4.To take my llamas out hiking and packing more often. And maybe even do a camping/backpacking trip with them, too. (I bet they’d appreciate the break from their babysitting duties, too)

5.To find more time for hand spinning my wool.

6.To work on the relationship with my mare and to ride her, even if only around my own paddocks.

7.To take riding lessons again.

8.To ride in at least one trail ride. And hopefully the Spring ACTHA event.

9.To become more fit, strong and flexible.

10.To challenge and hone my photography skills.

That last goal had been started in 2009 by participating in the weekly photo challenges of Sunday Stills and Macro Monday. But in 2010, I am taking it a step further with my participation in Project 365, where I will be challenged to find something to photograph every day and post it to the group.

I was going to start up a new separate photo blog, too, like many others have done, but I know I’ll never be able to keep up with another blog, so instead I’ll be posting my Project 365 photo on my Laughing Orca Ranch blog, and hope no one gets annoyed. I won’t be posting it in a separate post, unless I don’t have anything else to blog about that day. Instead I’ll just add it to my post somewhere, probably at the end. So, bear with me, folks.

Here is my very first Project 365 photo for 2010.

So, have you made any special goals for 2010?

This is you blog, after all, so I won't go into great detail about my own goals. But I will say that I'm with you on #9 for sure!

I'm also with you on #6 & #7.

I took care of #3 in 2008. The back-up camera in my Pathfinder makes it a cinch!

Can't wait to see your photos for Project 365.

My goal is to get back on a horse, hopefully Quad! No cantering, just walking! And, to get Scout and Cali ready for trail work.

Sounds like you have some good goals for 2010. I hope to get out to the barn to see Rusty 3x a week over the winter, not buy any more tack or riding apparel until the summer (hopefully after I lose a few pounds) and to start being better with my finances...

I always like your photos, so post as many as you wish! :-)

Happy New Year to you and your family!

I'm with you on the Project 365 - I posted my first one today! At least that's one resolution I think I can stick with :)

Your goals sound great, and I am sure you will accomplish each and everyone of them!

The only goals I have would be to ride Fritzy more, I think my confidence will be so much better, since working around crazy horses all day! Fritzy isn't as crazy as I thought she was.

I also want to ride Brandy more in the arena, I did a lot of trail riding last year, which isn't bad, but this is the year for getting that slow, collected lope.

I also have a lot of training to do with my little Mustang!

Looks like I will have a busy horse summer, I work all day with horses, then will come home and work with more horses!

I love your photos, they are fantastic, and I can't wait to see more!!

I have my own fears to conquer about getting on a horse.....a particular horse, that's for sure. It's been two years since our accident and I'm still afraid of him.

Happy New Year, Lisa!

You know mine (although I'm backing down from the no candy rule. I'll go with 1x a week. You're right, life requires chocolate).

I can totally help you with the trailer thing. Get these things: http://www.qwks.com/Hitchin-Rods-p-2.html My husband has them and it has helped me immensely when I'm doing the hitching on my own!

Here's a great quote from the site: Hitchin' RodsTM are a great hookup guide for bumper pull or gooseneck trailers. Imagine the time you will save. Each set includes two magnetic rods. Imagine the marriages this can save!!

LOL. My marriage was never threatened by my lousy backing up skills, but I love to be able to do it myself.

Real cowgirls can hitch a trailer, right? :D

Thanks for all your thoughtful comments over at my place!

LOVED your post today...the herd of animals at the gate trying to get to you= really made me chuckle it up!!!
I have not made many New years Goals... There are some in my head and not any written down!
You will love the freedom of being able to hook yourself and go. That, I have to say is one of the best ways to connect with your mare...mine totally had to rely upon me for any comfort and safety as I took her places-alone!

Your first shot of the 365 is AWESOME Liss!
Great!

I'm sure you will meet those goals with no problem. I'm always amazed at how well all of your animals get along. They can all crowd together at the fence without biting and kicking... or at least I don't see that happening in the photos.

Looking forward to seeing your 365 photos. Your goals are all good ones. I would love to come backpacking sometime with you and the llamas!

My main goal is to transition from graphic design for clients to making a living with my own art. My wonderful husband helped me get the front room (the old post office) turned into my studio during his break. We are also going to get our old house in working order this year.

I'm so glad I've gotten to know you in 2009. Wishing you, your family, and all the critters a fabulous 2010!

Lisa,
I guess that I really don't make goals at the new year. I decide things all year long, as it becomes apparent that a change is necessary. It can take the whole year to make that change sometimes - but then again, I can change in a day. It all depends on what it is and how bad I want the change or if I'm forced to change.

I like your goals. They all sound great. They all sound more relaxed and joyful - much easier atainable than your goal for 2009 to mount Baby Doll. You'll do just fine. Glad to see your spreading your wings with other goals.

You take beautiful photos, so I'm ready to view all that you post! I love your pic of the animals on this post. You really have quite a lively crew.

Looking forward to a new year with you :) Thanks for your kindness. You have a big heart, Lisa.

No set goals here- just taking things one day at a time. I'm going to be checking every day for you 365 photo, the first two are excellent!

Lis- Sound like admirable goals! I know you want to be up on your own horse, but for me (and mind you I am just telling you about me...) riding and cantering and actually BREATHING on my friends dead broke horse helped me immensely after my broken shoulder. I only rode him twice before I got on my own guy, but it helped a LOT! If I can come as far with my horse as I have, well, I KNOW YOU CAN!! Something to consider anyway... Good luck in the new year....

Never have been one for goals or resolutions in the New Year, probably because I know myself well enough to know I won't stick to them! Some of your goals sound great though.
4. Go for it! We took llamas trecking in the Wind River Range in Wyoming a few years ago and I still think of it as one of my all time favorite vacations.
6. You can do it, I know you can!
10. Tough one! Your photos are already awesome :)
Happy New Year.
