A Little of This and a Little of That

By now I bet everyone has been dealt with or is starting to be affected by the recent Arctic Blast that has blown through much of the United States. It made it’s way through here this morning and afternoon filling our skies with blowing snow and single digit temps. For the first time this winter, after my gloves got wet from watering everyone in the barn, they stuck to every metal surface. The pipe railing even tried to steal the gloves off my hands. (Note: Tonight it has gotten down to 4 degrees! Brrr! I'm leaving some of my faucets dripping....just in case!)

And after being outside for an hour taking pictures, my thighs were completely numb and I had frost on my eyelashes. It took me several hours just to feel warm again, even with the space heater pointed at me while I was tucked under several quilts and a down blanket. Brrrrr!

I really miss summer. How ‘bout you?

A few days ago my twinlings had their best friend, C over to hang out for a few hours. C’s Dad dropped him off and then drove out to Moriarty to gas up his little airplane and take it up for a flight. I sometimes hear airplanes go over our house, and some are quite low, especially the military planes, but that day I heard a plane above our house that wasn’t just passing over. After a few minutes, I walked out on our loft balcony and looked up and realized that C’s Dad was circling our house and giving us a ‘wing-wave’. I thought that was pretty cool. I’m glad I grabbed my camera and managed to get a quick photo.

The other day, I happened to glance up in the big paddock and saw my mare napping. I’ve never been able to get close to her while she’s napping (yet), but I think my mare is so cute when she’s all curled up asleep on the ground that I can’t pass up an opportunity for a photo or two. She didn’t seem happy that I caught her sleeping. It’s as if she thought humans should never see her in such a vulnerable position, and especially not with a camera in hand.

As soon as she realized I saw her, she jumped up.

“See, what I have to put up with over here? I’m telling you. It’s an invasion of privacy!”

IMG_6428

“Unless you’ve got carrots, apples or cookies for me, would you mind going back inside your People Barn and giving me some peace?”

IMG_6432

And I haven’t done any recent updates on the chick trio. They are now 15 weeks old and it’s easy to tell which are roosters and which is a hen. Lucky me I ended up with my scale loaded heavier with roosters.

IMG_6456

Good for them, they are turning out very good looking, thanks to their Dad’s good genes, so they shouldn’t be too difficult to find new homes for when the time comes.

IMG_6465

IMG_6458

My intention was never to have any roosters, but in the end I’m glad we ended up with Sid Vicious, the Golden-laced, bearded Polish and Mr. Cotton, the Japanese Silky. They are both coop eye candy, which is basically the only reason we keep them around.

IMG_6460

IMG_6480

But 4 roosters is a bit much for our 16 hens, though. It’s kind of sad, though, because the rooster chick with the Ameracauna fluffy cheeks has some gorgeous markings.

IMG_5550

Whenever I go out to the coop, Suzie, one of our Silver-laced Wyandottes keeps an eye on me and usually follows me around. I think she just likes to have her picture taken.

IMG_6448

The Welsumer pullets that I bought at the Poultry Swap back in August lay the most beautiful dark brown eggs and they are two of my favorite hens now. I love the way they are shaped and the coloring and patterns of their feathers, too.

IMG_6468

I’m also glad I bought a Cuckoo Marans pullet in August, too. This gal is so pretty and lays the most unusual dark, muddy-green eggs.

IMG_6454

She looks a lot like our barred rocks, but the bars of the barred rocks seem more bold.

Eating must be so exhausting for chickens.

My Project 365 photo for today.

Blue Moon Sunrise over Laughing Orca Ranch.

IMG_6903

Taken using my Canon PowerShot SX110 IS. Edited using Picnik. The sky was actually that bright pink, probably even brighter actually. The sun was rising up in the East in front of our house, and the Blue Moon was just beginning to sink down in the West behind our house. It took my breath away. How about you?

Love the last photo! and some very cool birds. My old stud hated to be caught napping , I rarely ever saw him down ,and if I did he was on his feet imediately (same attitude as your Baby Doll)

What kind of editing did you do to that pic? Love the rich pink sky!

Kimfer's gelding Baron gets caught napping often. He can be so stubborn that she'll go over to get him and he stays laying down. A few times she's even haltered him and had to yank and pull on the lead before he'll get up... silly boy!

ooooo that pink sky is gorgeous!
Great posts Lisa, we are lucky enough so far to be outside of that big arctic chill (knock on wood) here in the NW its been in the 40's and low 50's and rain. Always rain up here LOL

What a fabulous photo! Is this an extremely cold winter for you compared to those in the past? I could not survive without long underwear...keep it on all day.

Beautiful 365!!! As for your chickens....they are just the cutest thing. I was never much of a chicken person, but you've made me look at each individual and see the differences and beauty each has...especially Sid! And Phyllis of course.

The sunrise is beautiful! I've been contemplating getting one of those cameras. I asked for one last Christmas but got an Olympus. It's a good camera but I haven't taken the time to figure it out. I want one that is user friendly.
Baby Doll and your chickens are plump! Maybe that's just a lot of fluff to keep warm with all that snow you've got!

Such beautiful chickens. I love it when the horses lay down. Most of the time I can go and take lots of pictures. Take care!

It's 18 degrees here.

We do not do 18. We are NOT amused. :)

Incredible sky, I've seen those pink skies, more often at sunset. Beautiful shot...

Your chickens are very colorful! I'm sure your mare sees you, and thinks, what are you coming to do? where's my meal?

I'm starting to think that these awesome sunrises and sunsets are the only good thing about this winter. I just found out that our mountain snow is dry and won't help the water table much once it melts. I had hoped all this precipitation would get us out of our drought so that we don't have to fret over water rights and the depth of our wells anymore. I have a bunch of lovely sunrise and sunset photos I'll post over time too.

I love the picture!Beautiful!

I had a quarter horse that would let me lay between his legs and lean on his belly when he was laying on the ground. I had a wonderful connection with him. I guess that's why its hard for me to find just the right horse now. You can't replace a horse like that.

Oh my gosh, that last photo is absolutely stunning. The colors are just amazing....

I also love that in the freezing cold months of the year, I can still find those little yellow flowers in your photos (like the one where Baby Doll is napping). It's nice to always have those reminders of warmer days!
Stay warm, girl!

Indigo lets me sit on her when I catch her down, which isn't often.

Haha I love your chickens they are so funny.

I can't wait for summer...even the 95 degree days with 100% humidity. I would much rather have hot days where I can jump in the pool or go inside to the a/c than days when its cold. It seems like the cold gets in my bones and I just can't get warm enough! Love the picture of the sunrise! Have a nice weekend...and stay warm!

Frozen here in SW Iowa! But I still love it. Even my old city of Atlanta got snow this week.

Your chickens are beautiful - but your sunset photo is amazing. Its beauty made my heart soar!

I love your pictures!

and the sleeping Chicken? I ve never seen that?

Star never lies down during the day, I have never seen her , nor has the barn owner, but I know she does because she gets poo on her head. :)She must only lie down at night.

a chicken buddy of mine is a die-hard Welsummer gal, I've never had one. I put in an order with McMurray and will receive some Delaware girls this May, I hear they are good layers of XL eggs.

yes, love the Project photo, unusual pink sky.

I love that Miley Cyrus song - The Climb, makes me want to go hike the trails and wave at airplanes.

You don't think it's Baby Doll's droopy lower lip do you? Maybe you caught her drooling! She couldn't have a photo like THAT posted on the internet for the world to see!

What a lovely sunrise with the moon...excellent shot Lisa!

Well maybe you could keep just ONE rooster???
I was just getting to bed from my blue moon ride when you took your sunrise shot!!! LOL

You sure have some beautiful animals. These birds are the most beautiful hens/roosters that I've ever seen. Nothing on your ranch is ordinary, is it? :)

That 365 shot is stunning! Baby Doll is even out of the barn. Simply georgeous. The Lord in His heaven is looking down on YOU!

Hehe, I would not recommend sneaking up on Baby Doll when she's lying down...if you ever think of it...Daisy would never let me get near her, either, until one day she was lying down on the lawn practically right in front of the door...I went out, walked really fast up to her, and for about 8 seconds I pet her on the ground...and she was fine, and I thought "Wow, she's ok with it!". And then she stood up, turned around, and promptly bit my foot.... X-( lol...I couldn't really blame her, though, hehe...at least it was only my foot.

Your hens are gorgeous! I like Suzie :). And that last hen shot is just priceless! Soooo sweet... *sigh*
