Gophers and Mud

First the gophers. I think my high school days are coming back to haunt me. You see, my high school’s mascot was the Gophers. Yeh. Really. I know. Who in their right mind names their sports teams’ mascot after a small, shy, burrowing pest?

Apparently my high school. sigh.

We’d try to make the best of it by chanting things like, “Gophers Go For it!”.

I know……..Lame. haha!

I’ve known we had gophers here since we moved into this house, but didn’t think much of ‘em, as long as they didn’t eat my peach and apple trees or destroy anything important.

Well. they. have. crossed. the. line! Damn gophers!

Guess who has no electricity to their barn now? And guess why.

Gophers! That’s why.

We had an electrician out the other day and he said because the ground is thawing out with our 40-50F temps, the gophers are active. He’s been getting calls about chewed electric lines for years out here in our mountains, due to gophers. And it’s really the homeowner’s fault for not encasing the electric lines in flexible, metal or PVC conduit properly, and then burying it safely and deeply.

Clueless people really are burying their ‘bare’ electric lines to their garages and barns in shallow trenches. I suppose they believe it’s cheaper not to buy protective conduit, but it ends up being very expensive in the long run when a stupid gopher comes along, bites through the electric line, and moisture gets to the exposed wires. The Electrician disconnected the electric wires for us. And now, to fix the problem that the previous owner caused, we’ve got to rewire the entire line from the house, all the way up to the barn, and encase it in the conduit (like it should have been done in the first place. grrr!), and then bury it in a deep trench.

What a pain! We had similar problems when our water pipes to the barn froze and burst two winters ago, in the middle of winter. That was fun hauling water up the steep, slippery hill the rest of winter. Not!

Wanna know why those water pipes burst? The same homeowner never took it into consideration that water pipes in these mountains must be buried BELOW the frost/freeze line, which is at least 18” deep. Yeh, our water pipes were only buried about 8” deep. We had to wait until Spring and it cost a couple hundred dollars to get that problem fixed with a backhoe. Bleh! People really annoy me!

And so do gophers. This photo was taken underneath my peach tree today. Mr, Gopher better leave my peach tree alone or he’s going to be taking his last breath when a water hose is plugged into his burrow!

Mud. I know there are many of my readers who deal with mud all Winter long and even during the Spring, but here in New Mexico, it’s rare to have mud except after it rains…which is rare. We usually have rain during our monsoon season in July and August, but this past summer we only received 3 good rains and the mud dried up the same day.

But we are making up for that lack of moisture this winter and now that our snows are beginning to melt, it will all be replaced by mud. Greasy, slimy, sloppy, boot-sucking, slippery mud.

I took this photo today. This is the view up the hill from our house, to the barn.

It’s not easy walking uphill in this slick swamp. I’ve been letting Ranchman John take over the animal care during the worst of this. My gimpy knee easily gets torqued when I’m slipping and sliding and I’d rather not risk getting hurt if I can avoid it.

This is the view looking down the hill from the barn towards the house.

But I did take a video this evening when Jenna and I went up to the barn to feed the animals because John was busy on the phone. I don’t think I’ll be going up there until things dry out some.

                                Nasty!

I can almost trick myself into imagining the slop as being chocolate pudding with cherries on top.

Almost. But not quite.

Don't you have any cats? There were gophers when we moved to this one place, but our cats got rid of them.

I like your mud slide technique...bet it takes a lot longer to get to the barn now.

I wonder if you had moles and not gophers. It would be pretty difficult for a cat to catch a gopher seeing as the only way to get to them is by digging into their burrows that are always covered with dirt.

We've had 3 outdoor cats. They've all been eaten by coyotes.

Not worth the risk, I'd say.

Cats do catch gophers- but not when they are down their holes. I've had a couple of cats proudly bring me dead gophers, they chase them when they are out of their holes. Get yourself a Jack Russel Terrier, or a rat dog of some sort, they will gladly fix your gopher problem!

WAIT just one second missy!!! I watched your little video... what's this about picking up a horse?!? lol

LOL I was too excited by what I heard in the video I forgot my other comment!

The barn cats where I board catch gophers. Much as I hate any animal to suffer I do enjoy seeing the cats strut in with a dead gopher. Means less holes for my ponies to risk getting hurt in!

Lisa, put moth balls into their burrow openings. They will normally beat it pretty quick. Works with skunks, coons etc too. Not that you would have those there?

oh lisa i wonder if that is what is under our snow... i have no idea how the grass could possibly survive under so much snow for so long. it will be a miracle. i'm waiting for it still.

your video really shows what sticky mud that is - very different from the PNW mud i'm used to. (we had mud oct->june every year.)

watching your video i detect a grade 1 lameness - are you favoring that knee? good that your husband can help, that is quite a walk. i bet walking on the snow is easier.

i tried to walk down to our ponds and i was being so careful, and i still fell down. the snow is knee deep and really hard. you sink in it sometimes, and sometimes you don't, so you never know. it's so frustrating to me to not be able to check out certain parts of our yard/field. baasha doesn't even try, he just stays right next to the barn. 8 weeks now.

That is quite a distance from the house to the barn...I agree, walking on the snow would be safer. Going without electric in the barn must be an absolute pain and what a mess it will be getting the pipes in.

I know just what you mean about your knee...I had surgery for a tear 9 years ago and I am bone on bone. When I stress it, I am extra gimpy.

It is warming up here, but not enough to create mud....yet. We have plenty of snow every winter, but the way we are set up is easier than what you have. Be careful.

Sic Dobbie girl on them suckers! Sorry, I have no gopher remedies. I'm with you on the mud, but you sure are styling in those boots.

Any leads on Perfect Pony?

Lisa, the ranch up the hill has a very BAD gopher problem, too. I keep telling the owner to get some cats, but she raises birds and refuses to get any! My own cats do catch gophers (UGH!)! One of her prized Pasos stepped in a gopher hole and is now laid up for six months, so maybe they will FINALLY do something about them! They are NASTY CRITTERS!!! And mud? I hate it, too! All I would need is to slip and slide and throw my back out!

We have gophers! Luckily they haven't done any damage other than digging a few holes in the yard. Maggie Mae our JR mix, hunts them at night, along with skunks!! :)

Messy mud!!! We are still covered in snow here but the mud is coming. It's supposed to get warmer today and tomorrow and snow melt will happen and then the mud, ugh! The boys really churn up a lot getting into the barn, they don't seem to mind and love to roll in it.
Gophers sound bad, we have moles here, I don't think there are gophers? Lucy kills a lot of critters around here, GOOD DOG!!!

I keep saying I want our snow to melt, but I know when it does, there will be mud like yours. Yea!(rolling eyes)

Argh. It's so frustrating to find out that your house was built by someone who took a bunch of shortcuts, because ultimately you have to pay for it. My mother has been wrestling with gophers for years. She's brought to professionals out, and the gophers just keep coming back. They're like weeds.

Lisa...I have visions of you staring in "Caddy Shack" trying to catch your damn gophers and started to smlie...then laugh! I know it's not a funny thing to have happen...but you know me I always seem to find something funny in everything!
I think Jenna had a great idea to walk in the snow...might be safer. I have not had to put on my "muck" boots for 3 years now either in the PNW or the desert...but both places can get bad once in awhile! How's the horse hunt going???

Fortunately, that's not a problem we have on our side of the mountain. I'm pretty sure you can get gopher traps.

You need a couple of good cats to take care of those gophers! My entire neighborhood is gopher-free thanks to my Oz! I have avoided the mud so far, and you reminded me why! Hopefully you'll dry out soon enough.

You wern't kidding about the boot sucking mud. We get some mud in the Spring but it usually dries up pretty fast.....the joys of living on an old gravel pit I guess.

That was a long 'walk in the mud'. I called my grndaughter in here to see your walk - and she wanted to do it with you. I say YUCK. I am sad for you and rancher John. What an unforunate ordeal!!!
