Etta Bay was only here for a little over a week. Colleen let us borrow her to be a temporary pasture pal for our sweet Apache, while my neighbor sends her horses over to the leased pasture across the road. Seeing my Apache all alone during the day broke my heart. She doesn’t seem stressed or panicked and Apache only calls out to them when they are first led away from their barn in the morning, and maybe a couple times during the day, just to make sure they are still there. Once they return her call, she’s reassured and seems to be getting used to the routine. But now that Etta Bay is back home with Colleen, I’m grateful that my neighbor brings her horses back to her barn at night because I know it is reassuring to my mare that she has her neighbor herd nearby. I think the llamas and goats do help to keep her company, but I’m sure Apache would agree that another horse is a much preferred pasture pal.
Colleen is helping us find another horse to be Apache’s companion, but also one we all can ride, too. Colleen offered to sell Etta Bay to me, but I’m hoping for a horse more like Apache. Etta Bay is a much more opinionated mare who will throw temper tantrums when she wants her way. Nothing much more than a few head tosses, yanks on the reins, and maybe a bucking fit or two, not as cranky-pants as my Baby Doll could often get, but still just a little too much ‘tude than I want to ride on a weekly basis. I’d like another horse my kids can ride, so we can ride together.

My Daughter ~ The Horse Whisperer
As most folks know, children with Autism seem to have a special kinship with animals. My 7 yr old daughter, who has high-functioning autism (Aspergers Syndrome), is certainly no exception. Animals seem to want to be near her, even when she talks, sings, or moves in ways that typical children and humans don’t. Animals seem to pick up on her ‘different-ness’, as well as her gentle, understanding, generous, kind way she treats them. I’m often amazed at how animals tend to soften and move extra carefully when they’re around her.
She seems to communicate with animals on such a deeper level than most of us ‘normal’ people do.
It’s rare that an animal tries to move away from her when she connects with them. It’s as if they are in her magical spell.
I love to watch my daughter interact with her animals and I hope that my camera isn’t so intrusive that she loses her focus.
Looks like Jen put a spell on Etta Bay?
She’s not overly affectionate, but she does seem to know when a hug is appropriate. I don’t think Etta Bay has received very many hugs from small children. But she stayed very still and seemed to soften in Jen’s arms.
And then my daughter seems to know the exact moment when to take the pressure away, leaving the animal wanting more.
Please ignore my daughter’s bare feet. Persuading her to wear shoes, especially in the summertime, is like trying to put shoes on a rattlesnake.
I am not sure how she managed to join-up with Etta Bay, and so quickly, but she did, and Etta Bay followed Jen all around the paddock for more than 15 minutes.
When my daughter stopped, Etta Bay stopped. When she circled, the mare circled, too.
Wherever Jen went, Etta Bay was right behind or beside. She was like Mary’s Little Lamb.
Apache and I stood together watching Etta Bay and Jen as they walked around the paddock. I found it interesting that, at any time, Etta Bay could have stopped following Jen and walked up to be with Apache and I…or to head up to the barn where there was a pile of hay waiting for her.
Instead she chose to remain joined-up with her special small human friend.
During the last few minutes I remembered to video tape what was happening. I think I was just too entranced by what I was seeing, in the beginning and forgot.
When Colleen dropped off Etta Bay she warned us that this mare tends to be very difficult to catch.
But Colleen also said that she doesn’t spend much time with Etta Bay, except to catch her, ride her or have others ride her. Etta Bay is a hard working horse and is one of the horses Colleen uses in her guided trail rides and classes.
I believe that during her brief time spent here with us, she found her softer, more willing and giving side.
She was certainly not difficult to catch.
When Colleen showed up to take Etta Bay home, she was surprised at how easy it was to just walk up to her, halter in hand. She commented that she loved how Etta Bay didn't run away and she stood still for haltering and petting. I could tell that Colleen was pleasantly surprised.

That story just melts my heart.
I'm so thrilled that Jenna has animals who love without question. You do have to wonder if there isn't some form of communication going on, that we can never understand. Jenna's story makes me wonder if this isn't how Temple Grandin started out.
Well...Easy to catch with loving arms is one thing...Easy to catch with a halter in your hand is quite another!
It certainly seems that Jen has put a spell on Etta Bay; perhaps that spell would be extended to riding? Did you try any while she was visiting?
Wow, that brought tears to my eyes, that is so cool about your girl and that horse!
Wow, horses are amazing animals aren't they?
I love the pictures of your daughter with Etta Bay - just amazing and very beautiful to see!
I think I'll just send Dawn out to you and you can swap her for Etta Bay and send Etta Bay to me - your friend will never notice the difference - they look just alike! (Actually she'd probably notice in about a millisecond, but I love the look of that Etta Bay!.
To get another horse, it's obvious - you have to clone Apache!
What a great story about your daughter. All of the pictures were great, but the last one melted my heart!
What a special girl she is. :-)
Very sweet. Jen gives off a very balanced energy that horses pick up and feel comfortable with.

Loved reading and catching up! Haven't had much time to read my favorite blogs lately and yours is always at the top of my list!
Looks like your sweet daughter is becoming quit the horsewoman! =)
Just wonderful! Etta Bay , seems to just "Get" Jen what a wonderful little girl you have
This post gave me warm fuzzy feelings inside. lol. I really believe animals can sence the "inside" of a person.
Gosh darn it Lisa, you got me all dewy eyed over here. Every pic, I thought, "Oh!! THAT is my FAVORITE one!" and every pic after, it seemed that THAT was my new favorite one.
You have an amazing daughter. Thank you for sharing this time with her and Etta Bay with us. It was magical to see the progression.
Magic.
Just---
Magic.
Lisa, this was absolutely magical! Thank you for sharing this experience with us.
Way to go, Jen, I have some horses that could use a little of that lovin' and you can go bare foot too.
Beautiful, beautiful photos. If Jen likes her, maybe Etta Bay would be a good choice...
that's so beautiful! I just watched The Horse Boy (I'd read it earlier) and just watching that horse Betsy when the boy was with her was mesmerizing to me. I think there's something so powerful and beautiful between the autistic mind and the horse's (and other animals I expect) mind, that we 'normal' people will never comprehend.

This is awesome. I think I have a lot of new favorite pictures. My favorite pictures you have taken have been of Jenna. I love the one you edited with her blowing a bubble and all these Etta Bay ones. Precious.
That last one melted my heart. As a special ed teacher I have worked with several children with autism. What beautiful honest souls. The students I taught on the autism spectrum never stopped amazing me and tickling my funny bone. The things that come out of their mouths, just too much sometimes!
I am always amazed at how they do seem to really connect with animals, many with horses in particular. I think they really do understand animals better than most, speak their language so to speak.
Beautiful pictures! Beautiful relationship!
I love this post, Lisa! Your picks make everyone look so beautiful, and it's a truly amazing story. Jenna's a lucky girl. I hope she can keep that touch she has, and maybe expand on it.
Don't laugh, but I used to be that way with our chickens when I was a kid. I think as we get "world-weary," the animals can sense we don't trust them as much, so they don't trust us.
Lovely! Maybe Etta Bay's temperamental nature is like Apache's (as described by her previous owner), which melted away in the right hands...
Lisa...you got some amazing shots of your daughter and Etta Bay. What a connection!
Beautiful post Lisa. It gave me a big smile :0)
That is just too precious!! Great photos! Just seeing the pictures of Jenna connecting with Etta Bay and Etta Bay connecting with Jenna, amazing!
This has to be your best post this year!! Is there any chance Jen may team up with Etta? They seem to be perfect for each other from the pics..:-))
That story melted my heart. Thanks so much for sharing your wonderful daughter with us.
The animals can tell that she has a good and kind heart.
Love it!
Jenna is lovely and amazing! I loved this look into her life with animals. As for going barefooted - it's her natural affinity for nature. I grew up - barefooted - in Florida. I didn't have to dodge horse poopy, but I did catch a lot of sandspurs.
Nancy in Iowa
She sure is a special young lady!
Etta Bay is gorgeous, Lisa, and she definitely has a connection with your little one. Oh, and about her barefeet??? We used to run around barefoot or in flip flops all the time (around our horses). It drove my mother nuts!!! LOL!
Thanks for sharing with us. : )
Thats really cool how Jen just seems to have the special "thing" around animals. I always envy people like that, I want to be them, but just aint gonna be, but i try.
What a lovely post! Horses can see right through us, so I'm sure Etta recognized your daughter's purity of heart (and lack of hidden agenda :o)
I don't know if you've seen it, CeeCee mentioned it, but the story of Dr. Temple Grandin is absolutely amazing. It's due out in a month or two, and is the first movie I've ever pre-ordered (I caught it quite by accident, but what a blessing that was! :o)
Jenna and Etta Bay obviously bonded. EB found some affection she doesn't received elsewhere. Hugs and touches work wonders. I'm sure they miss one another. :(
Cute!! Not surprising though. When I lived in Key West I worked with the developmentally disabled (dive boat was my side job) and took six of my guys to swim with dolphins. Even though I was in the water I was totally ignored for the more "interesting" guys I was with. It was incredible. Simply mind blowing, some of the things I saw in those two hours. I need to get my new scanner figured out and do a post. I have some neat pics!
Can you send me some ideas for easy to make (preferably inexpensive) obstacles from easy to difficult? My friend Linda volunteered us to MAKE them ALL for the trail ride (same organiz. as the one you have been doing)coming this fall. I immediately thought of you. We have a few ideas, but I know you've seen a bunch recently so here's my research I was assigned! :) LOL. Judging it was easier... But we will ride it this time!
That post really moved me - how beautiful.
