Yes, these photos were taken soon after I arrived home from my visit today to the Emergency Room at the Hospital.
Yes, that’s blood in my hair. (I was thinking about becoming a redhead, but now I don’t think so)
Yes, these injuries were caused by my mare Apache. Yes, it was my fault. Yes, I was kicked in the face. No, I wasn’t wearing a helmet. No, I wasn’t riding. Yes, I was doing groundwork and desensitizing work with Apache. Yes, I was too close to her backside. Yes, she did give me a warning. No, I didn’t think she would kick me. But, yes, it was my fault.
Yes, Apache has been a little cranky the past few days. Yes, I should have taken that into account before working with her. No, I don’t think she meant to hurt me. Yes, I believe she just meant to tell me to leave her alone. No, I didn’t listen.
No, this doesn’t mean I’m selling Apache. No, this doesn’t mean I’m never riding a horse again. Yes, it does mean that I will be much more careful in the future. Yes, it means that I’ve learned some very important lessons from this. Yes, I’m a little sad, a little worried, and a little scared.
Yes, I had a CAT Scan. Yes, my eye socket is broken. No, they didn’t need to operate. Yes, my vision is ok, just blurry and sluggish. Yes, it’s hurts like Hell. Yes, I am taking strong pain meds. Yes, my head hurts. No, there doesn’t seem to be any brain damage. No, I didn’t get a concussion. Yes, I should have worn a helmet. Yes, it probably would have helped absorb most of the kick from the hoof. Yes, I needed four stitches and some medical glue for my two cuts. Yes, I have an Ophthalmology/Neurology Appointment tomorrow. Yes, Ranchman John is flying in tonight.
Yes, I’ll be laying low for a while. Yes, it’s painful and tiring to try and keep my eye open. So, yes, please forgive me if my comments are missing from your blogs for a while.
Yes………..I’m lucky to be alive.

I am so so so sorry to hear this happened to you! I can't even imagine. Just know you are in our thoughts for a quick recovery.
Oh My Gosh!! (((hugs)))
Still playing catchup with all the blogs I read but when I saw this post title I thought "uhoh, better check that out"
I'm SO glad you weren't hurt worse. Please get better soon but rest all you need to in the meantime!
Get well soon. I am sure you will supply details later.
I am so sorry this happened but you are very lucky. The power in these kicks is astronomical and can be deadly. A higher power was with you and I, for one, am very grateful.
Wow, Lisa, thinking about you and wishing for a speedy recovery.
Oh Lisa! So sorry this happened to you. Your post pretty much says it all. Hopefully you will improve quickly...what a way to learn a lesson. Take it easy. Is that possible for someone like you?
Wow! That's scary and looks like it hurts a lot. I've been there and done that, as you know, although you really got clobbered. Wishing you a smooth recovery - will be thinking of you.
I'm so sorry that this happened to you. Many wishes going your way for a quick and painless recovery. You lie back, rest and heal, please.
Oh Lisa! I'm so glad you are okay. You're right, though, in that it's the kind of thing that can happen to any of us. Please rest and take care.
Loves to you guys Lisa. Heal up quick!!
Yer right, redhead is not your color ;)
Holy crap, girl! I'm glad you're going to be OK.
It's so easy to forget just how big and how powerful these animals are.
Oh, Lisa, what can I say?? I hope you recover quickly, both physically and emotionally! We'll see you back here when your headache fades. Take care and let your family coddle you for a while.
Oh my god Lisa!
I am glad you are ok but ouch! I feel so bad for you. I scratched the lens in my right eye years ago from a flying object at school and I can tell you how painful that was when the light hit it. I could not imagine how bad yours must hurt.
I hope you recover quickly and again OUCH!
Good news, Monday theres a package on it's way to you. Sorry for the wait but I hope you will think it's worth it.
Boy, oh, boy it hurts me just looking at you! Always listen to your first instincts! Hope you take care and feel better. The hubby just saw it to and told me if my horse did that it would be gone. I said that I will make sure I listen to any signs he or she may give. But I know Lisa, that you aren't always thinking about getting hurt and it was an accident! You take care of yourself girl!
WOW! You are fortunate that you still are able to see, hope your recovery goes fast for you. Don't give up on Apache, you are doing good with her. Take care.
Oh my goodness!!! I'm so sorry that you were hurt!
That sounds (and looks) really painful. I hope the broken eye socket and everything else heals quickly. Man, I feel so bad that this has happened to you...
Ouch!
Thanks for asking every question you knew that we would ask...being the curious sort!
Take care, rest well. Recover!
The quiestest horse I ever owned is the one that kicked me , it can happen. SO soorry , get well soon
Wow, hang in there kid.
Dan
I am so glad you were not hurt worse. Prayers for a speedy recovery.
Oh, Lisa, I'm so sorry.
I'm glad you're okay other than a broken face and some cuts.
Don't give up, Apache's a good mare and wouldn't have hurt you on purpose.
Hugs from me and Estes.
What comes to mind first is "Holy S@#$ !!!" Then comes "man Lisa I'm sorry. You can't seem to catch a break with the horsey related injuries!"
I'm really hoping everything is ok with you and you heal quickly.
Oh Lisa...this is terrible!!! Sending lots of healing and positive thoughts your way.....
I am glad that your hubby is coming home to help out. Feel better and give us updates when you can. : )
Yikes. I am so very sorry.
Oh, Lisa, I am so sorry!!!! How painful that must be, I can't even imagine. I have been very lucky with Gilly that all I have done was fall off and have never been hurt seriously. Things like this can happen so fast that we don't even have time to blink and it's over.
I hope you get better real soon and that you will be OK. I also hope this doesn't give you a set back in the progress you have made with your horse.
hugs....
Jane
Oh my! That is one heck of a injury from a kick! I really hope you feel better soon. Take it easy.
That looks bad! What happened?
I'm so sorry to see you hurting! You did a great job of fielding the questions. My old cowboy mentor once said that it's the horses we know and trust that will hurt us, because we don't expect anything bad to happen with them. I hope you heal up well.Hugs!
I am also so sorry that you got hurt.....some lessons are tough, aren't they? Please take care and heal quickly.....I was kicked right straight on my knee and it threw me across the stall, but it was also my fault.....so I can relate......take care! Sandy
Oh, how scary! I hope you have a quick recovery and no lasting ill effects, both physically and mentally.
Sending you healing energy and my prayers for a quick and complete recovery.
Oh Lisa! I hurt just looking at your pictures. Please hurry and get well.
Oh no, also hopes for a quick recovery from me.
Kicked in the face? That's beyond ouch! I'll bet you have whiplash if she didn't send your whole body flying through the air a few feet. I like the way you anticipated all the comments and questions in your post. I know you are losing patience with losing time to recoveries from accidents. So sorry.
I'm so sorry to read about this. I hope you heal quickly. Sounds like you have as good a perspective on things as possible under the circumstances. It's really unfortunate.
Oh Dear!
I am still gasping at the thought of you getting kicked! I am soo, soo sorry!
AND SO THANKFUL that it was not worse!
Thanks be to God..your horsey angles were there.
I think that is my worst nightmare..getting kicked. And believe me-you..I have put myself in that position a few times and had that thought, "I should not be right here, and if I am going to continue...I should get my helmet!"
Thanks for all the YES & NO's..it filled in mostly all the blanks that everyone would have ..and got the point across; you are healing and will revisit "the Past event" at your own timing/speed.
Liss, I am very sorry and will be praying for recovery and news you can handle from the Dr.
All in good time.
I am very glad your man is coming home for you too.
Love ya,
KacyK
My GOD girl!! You are accident prone, I decided.
That looks really really bad, and I'm feeling very sorry for you right now. You are one tough girl!!!
Hugs to ya and get better soon so you can have more adventures :)
PS
I think you need to change your ~AKA~ name...after this!
Something like, ~Lisa~OnTheGo~Gal~

Glad you are alright. I think we all get a little too comfortable around our horses and take risks we shouldn't. I love that you know what and why it happened and that you will not let it stop you! Way to go!!

Oh My Gosh that looks really bad. I am so glad that you are okay and will heal. I will be sending you jingles for a quick recovery; both a physical and mental.
Oh boy, Lisa! I'm so sorry; that looks so painful! :'-( I hope the pain goes away quickly!
Thank you for the comment on my blog. I hope you get to swim with a horse (Apache?) some day! It's really incredible; Daisy and I got an article in the paper for it :)
Again-Feel better soon!!!!

NO! Oh no, Lisa. I can't imagine how this happened - and I'm so sorry it did.
Sending you healing thoughts for your heart and head.
And prayers for a quick recovery of both body and spirit.
I bet thet tickled a bit..;-)
Glad to hear you are o.k.
Bummer!! So glad you are OK, and I'm sure Apache feels badly about this as well. Did you let her know that you don't hate her? Take it easy and let the kiddos take care of you. :)
Ya know.....your post will probably save someone's melon today.
Healing hugs from Washington State!
Oh my goodness gracious!
Well - hallelujah you're gonna be fine - just kinda sucks how bad it's gonna hurt for a while (emotionally as well as every other way!).
Prayers, girlfriend!
OH Lisa! Thank God you werent hurt worse, man girl, what are we going to do with you LOL Glad you will be ok ((hugs))
Oh Lisa! I'm so sorry this has happened to you!! It's a good reminder to all of us that even the calmest, sweetest horse can kick out when we least expect it. I find the hair on the back of my neck raises whenever I go behind the back of my sweet horse Poco, yet it never did that when I went behind Champ's rear, and yet he was more unpredictable and could be a handfull. Something about that intuition tells me I shouldn't trust being in the back of Poco. Don't give up on Apache, her equine instincts don't represent the horse she has been to you. You've made great strides with her and it's been incredible to watch how the two of you have bonded. You are an inspiration to us who struggle with confidence. Please take care and start feeling better soon!
OUCH! You must be living right! Speedy recovery wishes....
Holy Cowbells woman!!!
daaaaaaaaang how scary, and how lucky you are. someone's way of looking out for you.
I reckon these things happen to teach us to be more aware of horses, but dang why do they have to be so painful and scary sometimes!
- The Equestrian Vagabond
Oh, honey, I am so sorry this happened to you!!! It truly sounds like a case of wrong place, wrong time. I'm so glad that you are ok. I took the base of a hoof stand to the face a couple of years ago (basically a steel plate to the face) so I can totally relate to how that feels. I got away with just stitches but it hurt like hell. Feel better soon!
Jeez! Take care of yourself! Take it easy and get better. So very very scary.
Crap..I am so sorry this had to happen to you. I am glad you are going to be OK..I hope that there are no long lasting injuries to deal with. I will be thinking of you! :)
I am very glad that you will be ok. Thank you for answering all the questions before we could ask them.
Lisa...everyone has said everything I would have except...whatthefuck??? (25 cents in the cuss jar) Wow girl...Friday the 13th...is just never a day you should take any chances! Prayers for a speedy recovery! Try to trust your instincts more in the future...I think you have teriffic insight and need to listen to the little voices in your head...to many of us try to "cowgirl up" when we would be better off sitting out from time to time...including me!!!
Oh my! I'm so glad you're Ok-ish, and that it wasn't worse.
Heal up quickly!
OMG Lisa! I am so sorry about what happened! I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers for a super speedy recovery and I am so THANKFUL that you are going to be okay!
I have caught myself being a little to unsafe at work at times, and that is so not like me. Now I will go back to being extra safe!!
Take care and sending lots of hugs your way!!!!
Holy hell, that has to hurt. And be embarasing, too...
From your post, you knew exactly what you did wrong, and how you could've prevented this. I know - I've been there myself, and it's a bad feeling knowing you've just screwed up by the numbers. At least you were the one injured, and not some innocent bystander. I wasn't so fortunate, and it was horrible.
Full points for honesty and self-reflection - This is one lesson you won't need to repeat!
Take good care of your injury, and don't let this stop you from helping Apache be all the horse she can be.
Be Well.
Good grief. Thank goodness the "inside" of your head is doing okay.
Sally
OMG, Lisa, I missed this post somehow! Oh, please take care of yourself! I'm sure Apache didn't mean to hurt you. I'm always more aware of my horses now and I don't want to get hurt again, but one never knows...
GOSH durn it girl!!! I am SO sorry to hear this!!! I was just trying to catch up and realized I had missed this huge post from you! Oh I am so glad your OK!! My prayers are with you!
Now off to read your update
HUGS & PRAYERS
Lisa, that was a pretty risky move just to get your husband home for a bit. ;) Totally kidding. I am sooo grateful you are OK. You are one tough mama. So sorry this happened to you.
Be careful, my friend. Big hugs.
Holy cow, I guess I am behind on posts. I recall the one about the snake - and being I have a real problem with snakes, I had to medicate myself after that one! LOL!
Bang! Did you get it or what! I cannot imagine how that must have felt when it happened & thinking back on it. When they kick it happens SO fast. Don't let Apache off the hook. It is her fault! She kicked you! Yes, you had warning and all that jazz, but she kicked you! You can forgive her but give her credit for the kick. She did it and shouldn't have.
We always try to protect our horse. I do it, too -- ALL the time. I would rather take the blame than think my Windy could do anything but love me. But as you illustrated for all of us, they are just animals and have animal reactions when we trust them with our heart and soul.
So now you know and it will only make you a better horsewoman because of it.
One or two questions you didn't answer - did she swing around and kick or were you in an unfortunate position of being behind her? I always worry that they can turn so quick and wonder if my reflexes are quick enough to 1) pull them out of it or 2) get the heck out of the way!
Don't be embarrassed. It can happen to anyone. You didn't get hurt because you don't spend time with your horse. You got hurt because you were. You have come an incredibly long ways since the BD incident and should be very proud of yourself.
Hugs.
I'm definitely late with reading this and catching up. All I know to say is {{{HUGS}}}
OWW OWW OWW! OK so now I am all caught up. EEEK - Lisa you poor thing, I can only imagine how much that hurts. I am sending (belated) good wishes your way although words seem slightly insufficient at such times.
I hope you recover really soon.
Lisa, you've spoken about "the kick" but I'm just now seeing photos and reading your full account. Thank goodness I didn't know you then; I would have been a basket case LOL! This, and the 10 reasons NOT to wear a helmet should be "required reading" for all horseback riders. Thank God he took care of you.
