I have never seen nests clustered like this. Thank you for these photos, and for that lovely rain music.

How fascinating! Are those some kind of swallows that make those nests?

WOW! Those are fasinating. Mud dobbers?

Those are beautiful nests! So elaborate.
Your title is right on the money as well.

Neat pictures. What kind of birds build those nests?

Those are pretty cool all lined up like that. We need more so they can eat all our mosquitos, we only have about 3 pairs and they cant keep up!

Fern Valley and Fantastyk Voyager,
These mud nests aren't inside my barn. They were Deb's barn of Dragonwycke Ranch. I took these photos when I was horse camping with Apache last month.

Oh...and I think I jinxed myself on those skeeters, because for the first time in 3 years living out here, Apache and I were attacked by those blood suckers last night while I was hand-grazing here!

Chloe,

These aren't insect nests. So they aren't buzzing or bothering me at all. :)

Louise, DiBear, and Dan,

These mud nests are made by Barn Swallows.

WOW, those are incredible!
We had swallows that returned each year to nest in our barn. Dad loved it(non horsey type) and mom wanted them gone as if they poop in the water it is bad for the horses.

Hey girlie..that was the most sincere (and I hope we do make a plan too) comment to me about your bucket list objective with me!
I am so serious too, as I say,...if you can ever come out...will find the perfect lodging for you and also...the PERFECT Pacific North West rides- atop a horse that you can trust!
XOXO

These photos are so awesome! The color is great, the focus, the subject...I can't find any thing wrong. Good job.

Love those nests! Wow, what texture!
I don't know where my barn swallows are, their nest from last year fell down and they aren't in the barn now. I miss them!
good pictures!!!

Our babies have all dropped out of their mud nests and are now out eating flies/bugs with their parents, gotta love anything that naturally controls flies in the summer time!!!

My first reaction was, "What a mess waiting to happen!" Then, I was impressed. Just impressed by the craftsmanship and the sheer number of them.

I have three kinds of swallow nests in my barn: the open kind, this kind, and a modified open. I'll have to get some photos. Those closed up nests are new this year- are they cave swallows?

I am so impressed with how they make those nests and that they stay up there like that!

I would be the mean barn owner and cut down the numbers...

I know I know, but the bird poo is so bad for the ponies..

I have no idea. I'll have to ask Deb of Dragonwyke as these are all on the eaves of her barn. I took these photos
when Apache and I were horse camping up near Taos last month.
In my barn I only have two barn swallow nests and they are like the typical open bowl design. The one nest was full of 4 babies and one kept falling out and I kept putting the chicks back in. I was afraid it wouldn't survived but thankfully it feathered out and flew like the other 3.

Too cool! A few gourds would make some cool nests too..:-)

Very pretty! The swallows in Janow's stall are not so tidy. They leave long tail hairs hanging down, crusted with bits of mud and bird poop. They are fun to have around anyway.

Unknown said...

Jocelyn, around here the swallows are a "protected species." Illegal to disturb nest during nesting season.

Barn swallows create cup nests, the bottle necked nests are created by the cliff swallows.

Way cool! I love these shots.
