How is it that just about every time we expect kids or animals to do one thing….they end up doing another?
We typically only get rain during the late summer when it’s warm, and our snows are usually dry and powdery, so I rarely ever keep Apache penned up in the barn, unless we get freezing, wet snow and wind. I think most horses are happier when outside with more freedom to move around.
So after a day and a half of keeping Apache in the barn while we were dumped on by the heavy, wet snow, it was time to let her out. I had my camera ready to capture all the excitement. I expected her to explode in a galloping, bucking fit, but she did the complete opposite.
It was rather anti-climatic.
But I’m glad she’s a sensible mare with some self-preservation so she didn’t end up injuring herself. The most ironic thing about Apache’s freedom was that she kept coming back to me for attention and I had to keep encouraging her to go play. After just an hour, she was eager to get back into the barn and enjoy munching on some hay. I think the deep snow wore her out.
See for yourself.
(The video is rather long, but don’t you think my twinling Jax did a terrific job splicing together the videos and doing all the editing?)

She looks like she is really enjoying the snow. Nice video
Fun! I love watching your horse :)
Man that snow is deep!
Makes me almost wish for snow. Almost.
Just the right amount of play and sense, that's your Apache. Jax did a great job, it's a very enjoyable video.
They love the snow. I would love that much snow, just for a wile. I haven't been snowmobiling yet and if it gets warm our little bit is going to melt. I haven't even galloped bareback in the snow yet. Tomorrow! Really it's a miracle we have had our snow for 7 days now.
ps- Apache looks to be very sound.
Yes, indeed, hire that boy ;-)
She sure looks like one happy horse!
Yalla really loves Apache. She's respectful enough to clap her teeth in submission.
I always thought the horses would rather be outside to, but I'm learning that if anything is falling from the sky, as has been the case for the past three days, they won't leave the barn. They actually try to bust into the stalls while I'm cleaning them, because they don't want to get wet.
Good job, Jax.
Apache looks great. All that rolling is so cute. You guys got so much snow! Think I will stick to living in the desert and enjoying the snow through your videos!
Great editing, Jax! What a great world we live in, where you can share a movie of your horse in the snow with all of us. Love it!
I agree, it's much better for them to be outside if possible. I have a barn with stalls but I also have a tobacco shed with a roof around two sides and they like to stand under that in bad weather and this way they come and go as they please. I put them inside the barn only when it's very very bad.
Apache is a lucky horse. Great video!
You got quite a bit of snow! Jax did a great job!
Wow did Apache like the snow!
Great job on the video Jax:) She looks great out there, and pretty sound, is she back to new?
Apache looks great and the snow looks pretty. You get quite a bit snow out there, don't you?
Yep, he did a great job. I could use a lesson or two on the matter. Have I ever told you how I like your use of the word "twinling"? Makes me smile.
I think that horsey had a good ol' time. Sure is pretty to watch her.
