First of all I want to say thank you to all of you wonderful folks who were so generous and made donations to Walkin N Circles Ranch Horse Rescue through yesterday’s post. Everyone at WNCR is so thankful for your kindness and the assistance and generosity of the local volunteers who jumped in to help. Because of everyone’s help, the horses now have fresh water and the water pump and pipes are getting repaired, probably as I type.
Of course, WNCR can still use any donations you‘re able to offer just in case of any other emergencies that arise as well as to feed and care for all the horses and one donkey throughout the year. So if you are planning on shopping on Amazon. com, please consider going through the WNCR link on their website, so a portion of the cost of your order can be sent directly to the horse rescue.
Thanks again!

This really has been the coldest storm we’ve ever had here. We’re used to snow and those who live up here above 7,000ft expect it and actually enjoy it. But it usually melts in a day or two, and we rarely ever get temperatures below zero, and certainly not double digits below zero!
My llamas and goats are staying inside the barn even though they can wander out into their paddock whenever they want. Apache looks like she’s walking on high heel shoes with the thick snow balls on her hooves. She comes to me asking me to remove them every time I’m up at the barn. Zuni our GSD usually loves to play in the snow, but even she is finding a bare spot in her paddock to keep her feet from freezing.
And poor Dobbie, who never likes to leave my side and is always eager to head up the hill to the barn with me is unable to because the two times she’s tried, the snow on her paws has been so painful that she cowers and cries in pain. It’s as if the snow is holding the –27F degree temps within. So, she stays inside and only ventures as far as the back patio to do her business.
The chickens are also refusing to come outside of their house, even with the layer of straw I laid out for them. Today I saw Mr. Cotton our Japanese Silky rooster outside trying to enjoy the sunshine, but having to take turns standing on one leg, to keep one foot from becoming too cold. He gave up not long afterwards and went back inside.
Speaking of chickens………….
I’ve got something very sad to share.
Not all of our animals survived our arctic blast of 27F degrees below zero here in Central New Mexico. We lost one of our precious chickens, a little black hen, named Ebony.
This was Ebony last winter.
What is is even more sad about her loss is that she was born here in our very first clutch of hatched eggs. Her Daddy was the infamous, bad boy Sid Vicious.
That’s Sid, with Ebony in front, and her sibling roo beside her, last winter.
She was a very sweet little hen and gave us the cutest little white eggs, perfect for making snack-sized hard- boiled eggs.
I found her yesterday morning tucked inside one of the nest boxes. Sometime around 2:30 in the morning I had woke up to let Dobbie outside and something told me to peek out at the chicken coop. When I did I noticed that the chicken house was dark and the heater bulb must have burned out. I rushed out there and noticed that the walls were coated in ice crystals. I replaced the burnt out heater bulb with a new bulb, but I guess it was just too late for Ebony.
This photo is from last summer.
She succumbed to the cold and froze to death.
We’ll miss you, our pretty, little black hen.

So sorry about Ebony. We got down to -4 so that seems pretty warm compared to your -27. I guess that's what 2,000 more feet of elevation will do.

I'm so sorry about Ebony. This winter stinks, and I like winter.
My, that is COLD! I am glad our weather hasn't been that cold. So sorry to hear about Ebony, she was such a pretty hen and because she was one of your hatchlings made her more special.
Glad to hear that the WNCR has gotten water and the pipes and pump are being fixed! I ordered a book, some DVD's and other stuff using the Amazon button on their site. I order quite a bit from Amazon and I bookmarked their site so I can use their button.
stay warm!
hugs...

Awwww, that's so sad. I'm sorry for your loss.
Wow! Sorry to hear about Ebony. That is pretty danged cold - what a time for the heater to go out :(
Lisa, sorry you lost the little hen to the cold :o(
Try spraying or painting Apaches soles with vegtable oil, Pam or some such. It will help keep the snow balls from forming, You could probably use Crisco too, it may last longer. (good for her feet too).
Dear Ebony,
We are sorry you won't be around any longer but know you will never want for warmth or sunshine in the big chicken yard in the sky. Happy scratching. God Speed Lady Hen.
So sorry about Ebony. I can't even imagine what -27 feels like. I'm glad Apache and the other barn dwellers are doing ok. I'd be tempted to bring them in the house, lol!
And, SO glad to hear the pipes are being fixed at WNCR!! I don't envy the guys working on that job. :(
That is cold! And that is an understatement.
So sorry about the loss of Ebony, she was beautiful.
Oh Lisa, I am so sorry, that is so sad. This really has been one hell of a winter for so many states. Hang in there!
I think the perfect solution for Dobbie would be for you to invest in one of those little baby carriers that you wear on your front! That way she could be snuggled up with her Mom and go everywhere you went. It would be mutually beneficial because she would act as a little furry heater inside your jacket too :)
Oh, how sad. Losing any fuzzy or feathered friend is hard. What a downer. I'm sad for you.
Tucker is also having a hard time, like Dobbie. The poor guy has a tough time pottying - it's hard to do that, and balance while you are trying to keep your feet off the snow..at least one at a time in rotation.
Sorry to hear about your sweet baby chicken Ebony Lisa... we lost a guinea hen recently in the cold as well. It is never easy!
I also went to Amazon and bought a KINDLE for my sons birthday through the website so I hope it all helps. They are lucky to have you as a cheerleader/fundraiser for their cause. Keep up the great photographs and posts! I look forward to them!
Karen
I'm sorry about Ebony:( So sad! Hope you guys warm up soon.
So sorry about your little hen,An dgive swet dobie a hug for me , poor little dolly! Stay warm
I am so sorry about Ebony, Lisa. It's so difficult to lose someone you have nurtured and loved.
Sorry to hear about Ebony! Poor little thing...
It is so hard to take care of animals when it is down to those temps especially when it isn't normal.
My dog doesn't like those temps either - he is pretty quick heading out to do his business in the yard.
Hope you guys warm up soon!
Sorry to read about Ebony. I sure hope it warms up soon!
So sad about Ebony!
aww she was a cute hen... I'm sorry you lost her to the cold. Being from the north even I can't imagine a cold like that! I hope it thaws out soon for you guys.
Glad the ranch is getting the repairs and all is good (as it can be) again. I have to remember the amazon thing when i buy midgets college text books!
Glad to know that all is well with the horses. It's amazing the things that happen when people band together to help out!
So sorry to hear about your little hen! We lost one of our roosters this winter too!
I am so sorry for your lost. There are not words, only hugs.
I'm so sorry to hear about Ebony. I hope you warm up soon.
I'm so sorry to hear about Ebony! (((HUGS)))
My favorite photo in this posting is of Dobbie. The color of the house in the background is a shade lighter than Dobbie and the snow makes for a great contrast. Love the expression in the eyes too. I'm sorry about Ebony. It's been a tough winter.
