New Mexico has always been a little different.
We don’t get April Showers. It might not rain for many months and we can expect to see sunshine and blue skies about 350 days per year. But in return we also get less than 10” of precipitation for an entire year.
Compare that to the 80+ inches of rain and less than 130 sunny days that much of western Washington and Oregon receive per year.
But unlike the PNW, our rainfall doesn’t arrive until our Monsoon season in July and August. And we can get snow all the way into late May. So, we don’t see many flowers or much green grass here in the mountains above 7,000 ft elevation until late May, early June, although some of our trees are starting to leaf out now.
Which is why I have to wait to plant anything in my raised bed garden. Average Last Frost here is after May 26.
But with the low humidity, we also don’t have slug, mosquito or bug problems and flies don’t typically arrive until July and August and only stick around for a few weeks.
My apple trees did their bloomin’ over the last two weeks, but they’re done now, thankfully.
But our peach tree hasn’t even started, which could be good or bad, depending upon this recent change in weather. Don’t want them to bloom and then have an extreme drop in temperature freeze their ‘bloomers’ off before the bees have a chance to pollinate them. (woohoo, sounds kind of exciting, doesn’t it?)
Nope, here in New Mexico, especially in the mountains, April brings us wind instead, followed by……May Snow.
Our chickens don’t seem too happy to see the snow.
I noticed that our neighbor is even grazing some cattle on his several hundred acres of land, although we’ve not had much grass growth since last August. I do like seeing the cows over there from my bedroom windows. Sometimes I can even hear them mooing. This is the same land that my neighbor friend Val and I have leased to graze our horses on and to ride.
Yesterday it was over 70 degrees with sunshine and gorgeous blue skies. I wore a short-sleeve shirt all day. And when we were down in Albuquerque, just 2,000 ft lower in elevation than our house here in the mountains, we even turned on the A/C.
We’ve had a mild winter and hadn't had any snow since early February, so I kinda thought we were done with winter.....
I think our chickens did, too!
But last night the temps dropped down into the low 30's and we woke up this morning to snow...and it's still falling and blowing. And we’re supposed get down into the teens tonight. Brr!
Winter's last hurrah??
Sure hope so!

I didn't expect snow on our side of the mountain, but I was hoping for some rain. All we got were just a few spitting showers.
Tell your chickens to hang in there.

I can't believe you have snow either! That is so weird!!
Oh, my. I'm so sorry! I couldn't do snow any more this year...
We've had your winds all weekend :) I am afraid we are going to skip spring & go right into summer...
(One of my flowering crabs did bloom!)
It rained and tried to snow here on Friday. The temp was 48 degrees! The last two mornings we have been in the mid 20's! Burrr! Today we hit 60 degrees! Still pretty chilly for the first of May. We can't plant anything here in the gardens until after the tenth of June. We will usually have a hard frost around that time and then it is safe to put plants out. Our growing season is very short.
Your chickens look just as tired of the snow and crazy weather as ours do!
Our weather is almost the same as yours. We are at 7400 feet. We had snow (but it didn't stick) and we have the ^$%#$&^$#$^% wind!
Strange! Normally after the middle of march we are done with snow but I guess two weeks ago it went from 70 one day to -30 the next.
I miss Oklahoma, 95 degree weather and leafed trees. Ours are still naked here. Not to mention where I was in OK they haven't had rain in 9 months! Polar opposite of here where it's been 50 and rainy.
Oh,my! I remember one time, about 1974, that it snowed in our local mountains in JUNE!!! I remember because hubby and I were driving back from school (our college) and we decided to take a detour through the mountains..it started to snow and he yelled, "DON'T STOP!", so I just kept driving! Snow in June...
Oh my! I believe I would cry if I saw snow now! At least it's moisture though.
That's just plain unreasonable!
you do live in a beautiful area, but those extremes! brr!I guess though it is moisture so...
Crazy weather!
The chickens are plainly perplexed.

That is just crazy! Snow in May just can't happen! We had snow in areas here a few days ago which is totally NOT normal for our area! This winter (and spring) has been so bad and still waiting for it to end....if there is going to be an end.
Hope it warms up for you and hope you get some rain!!
Ugh! I am so glad our weather here is a bit more predictable. I was over snow months ago and wouldn't like to wake up to it today.
Stay warm!
You and North Dakota! I think, maybe and perhaps, we're finished with snow for spring. Then again, my sheep still need shearing so probably not.
sigh.
It always surprises me to hear that it's snowing in some part of the country in May. Geez. I'm pretty sure it's warmer in Vermont right now! Love the photos, and hope you get your garden going soon!
Just finished up the coldest April since 1888 in King County, WA near Seattle. The average high was a good 10 degrees below normal. Now we are adding more rain, over 30 inches so far. Poor horses...
Oh, you're just rubbing it in! No slugs? Really? The slugs have already eaten some of the cold crops I put out in my garden a few weeks ago :( I told my husband we're leaving the PNW and heading for NM!
Brrrr. I was going sleeveless and getting a tan in So. Cal. these past two weeks, came home, and now I'm back in my thick arctic jacket swinging a hammer at broken fence panels.
Better you than me, nice pics..:-)
I saw all that on the radar and thought of you while we were having Noah's flood. It was 38 this morning. In May. In Texas. Sheez!
Isn't our weather crazy? I was expecting one more snow before spring/summer. I hope that was it. We always have those April winds and May showers, kind of different from the almanac. Locally, they say never to plant before Mother's Day.
Yep, weather has been crazy this Spring. I guess it always is, but it seems more so this year. Crazy you got that much snow.
