Broken Four-Wheel Drive

On Christmas Day my kidlets ran upstairs to tell me that one of our chickens was stuck in the snow. I thought to myself, “No big deal. I’m sure a chicken can get herself out of some snow by hopping, flapping, or something”.

My kidlets said, “Hurry! She’s really stuck and can’t get out. She needs your help, Mama!”

I went downstairs and immediately looked out the sliding glass doors in our living room and saw Sarah, one of our Speckled Sussex hens, out in the deep snow. Poor girl. Yep she was stuck.

I have no idea why she would venture out that far into the deep snow, and leave the safety of the coop and the shoveled clear path to the house, but poor Sarah had hit a snow wall. She was literally wedged into the snow, and could not move.

I pulled my boots on and hurried outside and rescued Sarah from the snow. She cooed and clucked and just seemed very relieved to have me scoop her up out of her snowy restraints.

In the future, our chickens had better make sure their four-wheel drive gear is working before they ever try that again.

What a strange sight to see a hen stuck in the snow. I'm glad she survived. Did you find any eggs down there in that snow bank?

Poor chicken glad her mama saved her! We had a skinny little Chihuahua years ago that went out to pee in the snow. He walked fine when on all four feet but when he lifted his leg to pee the other three sunk to his belly in the snow and he couldn't move! Good thing I was out there with him, I quickly picked him up cause he couldn't get out.
We still have no snow, more rain today! ugh!

So glad you found her and rescued her! She must have been very cold.

You guys have really had a lot of snow this year. That's normal for us, but it looks beautiful there. Love the pictures; horse looks happy, chicken - not so much!

oh no poor little thing, luckily you noticed her

Maybe she needs teeny, tiny snowshoes?

I do admire her spirit of adventure. Lucky for her there was rescue squad before coyotes!

Good thing you were there or the poor girl might have turned into a chicksicle.

I have a friend who likes to point out - you never see chicken brains at the store - you see hearts and livers and gizzards, but no brains ;) I hope that chicken stays out of the snow after being rescued!

Looks like she just wanted to do a little off-roading. Glad you got her unstuck and back to the flock. Maybe she learned her lesson and will stay on paved roads from now on...lol.
