Farewell Phyllis

This morning my daughter and I discovered our beautiful Buff-Laced Polish hen, Phyllis Diller, deceased inside one of our nest boxes.

Phyllis was one of my family’s favorite chickens because of her high-society lady personality. She provided countless hours of entertainment with her silly antics and unique appearance, and some fun blog fodder, too: Phyllis Diller Blog Posts.

(These two photos were taken in March of this year)

I brought Phyllis home as a week old chick 4 1/2 years ago, and she quickly etched a special place in our hearts. She will be greatly missed.

That is sad. She was one great chick - and I mean that as a compliment.

I never thought a person could get attached to a chicken but now I know after only having my chicks for 3 weeks. I've gone through extreme measures to save one that had some weird thing that kind of looked like seizures. She's not completely normal yet but the attacks of whatever it was have stopped anyway. I was really crying over her for a couple days.

So sorry to hear about Phyllis. Sounds like she went peacefully though. You and Jen gave her a nice comfortable place to live which helped accentuate her ladiness.

4 1/2 years seems so short, but I guess that's pretty good for a chicken! She sure was a character, and you guys gave her a great name to go with it.

Sorry you lost one of the family. She was a beautiful doll and I'm sure is irreplaceable.

So sorry for your loss! We have lost four hens since the beginning of March. They all have prolapsed while laying eggs. I have never had this issue before, so not sure what is going on?!

Oh my goodness Desert Hen! I'm so sorry! Ironically, I believe this is also what happened to Phyllis, too. She hadn't laid an egg for months, and all of a sudden started laying a little over a week ago. I knew it was her because she's the only one that lays med sized white eggs (Our Japanese Silky lays tiny white eggs). And Phyllis rarely hung out in the nest box, except to lay an egg, and then she was out of there quick.
It's so strange and so sad. And nothing we can do to save them. :(
