Some folks say that kids can’t trick or treat successfully in rural areas. They say that houses are too far apart and that it’s next to impossible to gather enough candy in a sack, to make it worth all the driving and walking that must be done.
I beg to differ.
We live in a rural area in the mountains, about 30 minutes east of a large city. And we haven’t traveled to the city to do our trick or treating in 6 years, but my kids still end up with loads of candy each Halloween.

This year I took my kids to a local feed store where they had offered up their hay wagons to give kids a hay ride out to a neighborhood of about 50 homes, to do their trick or treating. That was a lot of fun! And having the homeowners come out to the hay wagons to hand out their candy, while we all stayed in the wagons was a wonderful idea, too!

After the hay ride, we drove over to a local church that was having a Trunk or Treat event. There were about 20 vehicles all decked out and decorated in different, unique themes, handing out candy to trick or treaters. And the church even had a DJ with a disco ball and music in the parking lot. Talk about fun!

After the Trunk or Treat event, we decided to swing by our friends’ neighborhood to visit and do some trick or treating door-to-door. The kids probably visited 15 Halloween decorated houses, collecting more candy.
When we got home, I weighed their treat bags, and between the three of them, they collected over 15 lbs of candy!!
Who says you can have a successful candy haul only if you trick or treat in the city?

You all know how to do Halloween right! Fun! Love the idea of the feed store providing a hay ride to the houses. We didn't get any trick-or-treaters. Good thing, because I ate most of our candy. I should never buy Halloween candy a week in advance.

my husband wants me to comment that to make it even more efficient next year, the 50 homes can mail all the children the candy, to save gas. *lol* we're amazed here, the kids did not have to go door to door!
what is trunk or treat? i heard it on the army radio station (cuz halloween does not happen in germany).
Sounds successful to me! Last night I only had 7 groups come by - boo! I love to decorate my porch with things that make sounds when you pass by them and step on them. The cutest little mini-mouse (she was maybe 2 years old) didn't want to leave my porch. She cried when mom picked her up to move on - it made my night.
My boy was at a party (our first Halloween apart!) and I found it very slow in suburbia.
Out where we are we only had 3 kids come (all one family) but they sure got a lot of candy out of it too, only visiting about 15 houses (we all just give more cause we know they wont hit as many houses)
Lytha, Trunk or treat is basically a group (either neighborhood, church etc) that use a parking lot and kids go from trunk to trunk, or in some its table to table, :)
Now as to the base experiance for Halloween, They live in stairwell housing..generally, 24 apartments to each building, and each building is 4 stories high. We would buy candy and would be down outside the building to hand it out while there. (in actuality, we bought bags of candy, and handed it to someone in our stairwell in charge of handing it out...)
As to Germans and no Halloween, back then they would come into our housing and go trick or treating...the stinkers!:P
