Crazy Chicken Lady

Ok. I can't believe I'm going to share these silly photos. My son Jackson insisted on taking some photos of me when they saw our hens flying up and perching on my shoulders and lap. They get a big kick out of me out there 'communing' with my feathered ladies every day. And they fondly (hopefully, lovingly) refer to me as the "Crazy Chicken Lady".
At least in these photos I'm not wearing my chicken lady hat that I knitted 2 years ago. haha Then I really would look like a loon!

As soon as I sit down with my tea, one of my Rhode Island Red hens usually jumps in my lap.
We end up having a pleasant little conversation together.
Then she will hop on my shoulder to enjoy the better view up there.
Oftentimes I am joined by one of our Brown Leghorns or one of the large (and heavy)Ameracaunas.
My daughter Jenna likes to come out to the coop and visit with her birds, too. She usually holds her favorite hen, the Amercauna, Angelina Ballerina. Usually what happens, though, is that the other chickens get jealous and try to join all the fun in my lap (that sounded a little naughty, didn't it? hehe). We love our chickens!

You are a crazy chicken lady! I think that's one up from being the crazy llama lady!

How did you get such friendly chickens? My son would absolutely be in heaven having chickens all over him like that.

OMG - I am DYING over here...that is SO funny. Those pics are awesome...and bizarrely (sp?) familiar. I came up the stairs from the chick room this morning saying to my husband "honey, i'm worried i'm going to be known as the crazy chicken lady"...and he about fell over when he saw my little silver-laced wyandotte chick sitting on my shoulder!! She has taken to jumping out of her box, walking onto my hands and up my arm to my shoulder, where she perches (oh, and chews on my hair..). I just love her so much...! :-)
We can be CRAZY CHICKEN LADIES together! We'll start a club! We can make t-shirts!! We'll tell wonderfully exciting chicken stories to each other...it'll be awesome!!! Others will be begging to join, too, I can just feel it. :-) :-)

Doesn't look crazy to me:)

From one chicken lady to another, I don't think you're too crazy!

I love hangin' with my birds, and I like to think that they enjoy a non-chicken creature to visit with once in a while!

You look so relaxed. On the rare occasion when I get to sit outside amongst the horses while they graze, the sound of their chewing instantly relaxes me. Sometimes I fall asleep in that chair as they wander around me. That only lasts until Bombay starts poking me on the top of the head with his nose, though.

My sister calls me the chicken whisperer, although she thinks i'm crazy (some people just don't get it). That is a sweet photo of you with your daughter AND chickens in your lap.

OMGoodness! We must be soul sisters, as my husband would say of two women that share unusual interests.
I so love sitting among my chickens. They are quiet and attentive. Their little noises are comforting.

Thanks Jenifer! You've just got to bring your kids up here to play with the critters soon!

Hi Christy, thanks for stopping by. I'm not sure excatly why our chickens are so friendly, but they did receive TONS of handling, holding and hand-feeding as chicks. I've always talked to them since they arrived and now they come running when I call them. Calling out "Chickies!" is the way I get them to go or come wherever I want them to. My advice would be just to handle them alot from day one.

farmgirl, What did you name your your baby Silver Laced Wyandotte? She sounds like she has claimed you as hers. I know it's weird, but I don't really have a favorite chicken yet. They are all so special and unique in their own ways.
I love the idea of a Crazy Chicken Lady Club with t-shirts and such. Can we have a special dance (like the chicken dance) and a fun 'call-out' like BAWK, BAWK! hehe
I think we already have several potential members right here who've read and replied to my post. hahah!

Thanks goatgirl!

Meg, thanks for stopping by. I think you're right. My girls like the higher perch that my lap and shoulders provide! hehe

Thanks for posting a comment, Nuzzling Muzzles. I always enjoy hearing from you, and I LOVE your blog, too. Sitting outside with my chickens and other critters is such a calming experience. Whenever I need some peace, I sneak out of the house and head to the barn or the coop.

I agree about the hay munching. It's funny that that sounds can be so calming and meditative, isn't it?

How funny that Bombay likes to pester you when you try to take a little nap in the pasture. hehe
Baby Doll will hang her head right over mine, while I sit outside, and breathe her hay breathe right into my face. And I don't mind one bit! hehe

Hi sugarcreekstuff! Always niced to see you around these parts. hehe
I love the idea of a 'chicken whisperer'. What a great idea for a blog name or a book.

Thanks for the nice compliment, too. I like it when my family comes out and enjoys the chickens with me. At least that way, they can't just point fingers at me as the being the only one here crazy for chickens. hehe!

CeeCee, I love that we can be soul sisters! I thoroughly enjoy reading your blog and often feel like we are walking along parallel universes. We share so many similarities in interests and life experiences.

From now on I'm now going to imagine you sitting outside communing with your chickens in Texas, at the same time I'm doing the same here in New Mexico. We'll even share a cup of tea together.
