Today I was preparing to cook The Big. This egg was laid by my very large Ameracauna hen (who has no name). She is also the same girl who laid the underdeveloped egg from the previous post.
I cracked open this x-large egg and was quite surprised.....

Yep. That's right. Two eggs, laid by the same hen with double yolks! But that's not ALL. Two weeks ago, the same hen laid her first double yolk egg. So, I'm wondering if this is a reliable pattern? She lays one super large egg every 2-3 days. Each has a double yolk. Do we have a special 'Double Yolker Hen' here on Laughing Orca Ranch??!
I know one thing for sure, as a mother of twins who had my own 'double yolks', I have a great deal of respect for her. She deserves a name. I'm thinking "Myrtle" as in 'Fertile Myrtle'. hehe

Good for Myrtle. We had a rhode island red hen years ago that was a reliable double yolker. I bet Myrtle will keep laying double yolk eggs too.
Wow! I'd say that's a pattern. We've got one hen who routinely lays enormous eggs, but only one has been a double-yolker. That was a fun surprise!
I finally made it over to one of your blogs. Thank you for the nice comments you have left on mine.
I've had hens before that lay double yolked eggs. I find that it really can be a pattern for one hen to keep doing it. At least for awhile. It's always a fun surprise.
Your photos are great!
Yum! The yolks are the best part. One of my hens consistently laid double-yolkers her first laying spring. Now she just lays ginornous eggs with one yolk---she's looking after my cholesterol. ;)
Hi Ga Farmgirl! Thanks for visiting. How long have you had chickens? And for how long did your Rhode Island Red lay double yolkers? Did she live a long time? How exciting to think that our Myrtle may lay many more double yolks for us!
Hi Meg! I'm glad you stopped by my blog. Yes, it does seem like a pattern around here. And now we even have TRIPLE YOLKERS, too! I wonder if that will become a pattern, too. haha
It's like hunting for Easter Eggs around here. You just never know what treats will be inside the egg once opened!!
I like the super large eggs, too. Kind of feel sorry for the hens that have to lay them, though. hehe
Farmer Jen,
I'm so happy you visited my blog. I've been enjoying your blog for so long now. I absolutely love your eloquent journaling and your beautiful photos. You seem to live such a peaceful and balanced life in your lovely mountains.
CeeCee, I wonder if our hen will only lay the double yolkers for her first season, too. I would think it is harder on their systems laying more yolks in each egg?
Did you see my post today about the triple yolk egg??! I'm wondering how often a hen, who lays double yolks and triple yolks, will lay an egg. It must take more time and resources to lay so many yolks, right?
