The other day, all 13 of our chickens laid an egg for the first time. Our chickens are now 26 weeks old and have been laying for several weeks now, so this is a big accomplishment. The only negative thing is that the 13th egg was a fart egg (basically a shell with a gelatinous center and no yolk), and it's obvious who the slacker was due to color of the egg: a brown leghorn pullet. (my least favorite of all of my girls).
But on a positive note, we are now selling between 4-6 dozen eggs a week with a waiting list, too. Our girls need to get busy laying more eggs to keep up with the demand! hehe

Feed that tiny egg back to your girls. The protein and shell will do them good. Also, have a discussion with your leghorn hen about going to "Crockpot Camp"---she'll get the picture and soon be a champion egg layer. ;)
I love pets that earn their own keep.
Wow, you're selling your eggs...that's so cool. Do all your customers have a standing weekly order?
LISA!!! You can't have favorites!!! That's not fair. She is clearly feeling your attitude toward her and its affecting her egss. Just kidding. I like the crockpot talk idea that ceecee posted. Should get her moving in the right direction!
You're in business now. Do your kids help with the farm chores?
ceecee,
thanks for the tips. yes, we always feed our egg shells and any leftover cooked eggs to our girls. They gobble them right up and thir eggs also seem to much stronger, too.
Crock Pot camp?! hehehe
Sugarcreekstuff,
Me, too!
Farmgirl_dk,
Yeppers! When we decided to get chickens, selling them was not a main focus, but there are people who ask for our eggs every week. So yes, we do have a couple customers with 'standing orders', but some just walk up and ask for a dozen or two. So, we've got a little waiting list now.
Jenifer! hehehe! You crack me up, girlfriend!
Hi Nuzzling Muzzles,
Yes, I suppose we really are. haha
And the kids do help gather the eggs, carry chicken manure to the compost pile, feed and water the goats, sheep and llamas, and feed the cats, too.
With all these critters, I need all the help I can get! hehe
Oh my, that's funny. I still get a bit thrown when one of the chickens lays a weird egg. It doesn't happen that often, but still, I'm like, "What, are you taking a day off?"
