Doubles on Time

We can pretty much count on getting two double yolk eggs every three days, like clockwork. And they are always bigger eggs than the others. The kids think we should gather 12 double yolk eggs and sell them for twice as much. But it would take us about 14-18 days to gather a dozen, and I like to sell our eggs super fresh, only a couple days old, or sold on the same day as laid.
Waiting 18 days to sell a complete dozen double yolks would make several of our double yolk eggs as old as 2 weeks. Yuk. I think one of the reasons folks like to buy locally grown eggs is that they know they will be fresher.
So for now, we just tuck them in a typical dozen carton as a surprise or just munch them ourselves.

Can you tell from the outside of an egg if it's a double yolk or regular yolk?!? WOW!

What a fun surprise for folks. I agree, just pop one or two into each dozen and it'll keep 'em coming back for more.

Hi Mell,

Yeppers. So far we are 100% correct when guessing by size of egg.

Hi CeeCee,
Thanks for stopping by, and I agree. What fun to share the excitement!

We get double yolkers quite often from our barred rock hen. I agree the size is what lets us know almost every time.

One of the women I met in our twins club, back when it still existed here, made eggs the morning she found out she was pregnant. She cracked 6 eggs, and they were ALL double yolk eggs. Later that day she found out she was pregnant - with twins! LOL!

When our chickens were newer and I was getting all kinds of information from more knowledgeable and experienced "chicken keepers," I learned that commercial eggs are sometimes as old as 7 MONTHS, although 3-5 months is a more typical "shelf-life." And I noticed that my eggs that are as old as three weeks still have that perky "high whites" look, so I no longer obsess about the eggs needing to be sold only a few days old.
