Llamas and Horses~A Love Affair

Yes, I do love my llamas, and I do love horses, especially my painted horse, Baby Doll.

But this story is not just about my love for llamas and horse. No. It is also about the love between horses and llamas. Yes, It can happen. Just follow along and you shall see.

As I've mentioned before we like to take our llamas out a few times a week trekking on the country roads near our house and into the 'Back 40' and up and down the hills. I really enjoy it and so do the llamas.
For my birthday last week it was a gorgeous day, so I decided to take my llamas out for a hike. My son Jeremiah and daughter, Jenna wanted to join me.
So, we geared up Cataleya with her pack, loaded up some water bottles, and the camera, of course. And hit the trail. That's me and Jenna, with my female llama, Cataleya on the left, and my gelding llama, Catlinite, on the right.Jeremiah enjoyed walking Catlinite on his bike. Jenna likes to hand feed Cataleya, as if the ground is not good enough for Ms. Princess Llama to eat from. Cataleya loves the attention.Thank you, Jenna. Do you have some more delicious grass for me? (as if I am not surrounded by grass below my pretty head, hah!)Jeremiah just hanging out with Catlinite.Hello Horses.
See, here we go. It's time for horses and llamas. Just wait and see. I promise you, it'll be good!AAAAAGHHHHHHHH!!!! Scary, horse-eating, rabid llamas!!!"Get ready to run, buddy!"
Now, wouldn't these two make great barrel horses? Look at how they skinny past that evil cholla cactus without even touching it!"I really do not know why horses get so freaked about us llamas. Silly beasts""AAAGGHHHH! Those scary hairy monsters looked at us! RUN!!!"Cataleya had had enough. She spat at them...loudly. "Enough boys! Get your heads back on straight and cut out that nonsense!"They listened.Jenna has a way with all animals. I think it has something to do with her Aspergers and OCD. She has a special wave length into the animal world. All animals are instantly calmed by her and are usually drawn to her. This big guy was no exception. It was as if Jenna put him into a trance. He even seemed to forget there were llamas less than 8 feet away from him.Jeremiah hopped off his bike for a minute to pet the horses, too. He used to be terrified of all animals, so I love to see him willingly walk up to a critter to get closer. Then the horses remembered the llamas.Less than 5 feet away now.I can hardly stand it! Isn't this boy adorable?!

Ok, now here's where the story gets a little risque. If you have children in the room, you may want to shield their eyes.

For this is not just a typical love affair. This is the odd couple. A tryst across two separate mammalian species. Not typical at all.

Many folks who own horses know the reaction that horses get when they see a llama. Usually chaos ensues. But not this time.Cataleya is all girl...and loves to flirt. Getting to know each other.*sniff-sniff* "Nope, she's not a horse. But a strangely alluring scent just the same. Mmmm."Here is where I was laughing. Just look at their dazed and confused faces. They just don't know what to think or what to do. Cataleya seems to have cast her spell on these two fellas.Catlinite, who is Cataleya's half-brother is not amused, nor much interested in the horses. I imagine him saying, "Take it easy, big guy. That's my sister!"

Are you ready for some more juicy candid shots?

Time for a little caressing and kissing now.The big guy started rubbing and nibbling his lips across her body. Cataleya didn't mind one bit. There were some sordid sound affects about now. A bit of humming from my llama girl and some grunting and snorfing from the big handsome equine.
I swear. If these two would have had arms, they would have both been wrapped together tightly. I felt like saying, "Hey! Go get a room!"I wonder if his 'tattoo' turned her on?

It was time to say goodbye. I felt a little guilty pulling them apart. They looked kind of sad.
"Don't go!!!"There was even a little jealousy. "Hey, back off, buddy! That's MY llama love!"

So, I told you it was going to be good! You weren't disappointed were you?

The next photos are rather boring after all that hot and heavy action. But on the way home, we passed by my neighbor friend, Val's arena, where her 3 horses were taken by surprise by the llamas walking by. Scout, Val's Appy/Paint/Arabian gelding used to have a crush on Cataleya, too. But he's usually kept pretty busy with his two mares and has seemed to have figured out what a little hussy Cataleya can be.So, they all lost interest and went back to nibbling grass.
Hey! Enlarge the photo by clicking on it! Say "Hi!" to my pretty painted pony, Baby Doll. See her up there, in her paddock, at the far right? "Hi Baby Girl!"
So, I hope everyone enjoyed my birthday llama trek. And I invite you all to join me if you are ever in the neighborhood of Laughing Orca Ranch. We're always on an adventure!

How funny! I would never have guessed the two kinds of animals would get along so well.

How does Baby Doll feel about them? Maybe you could pony the two llamas and BD won't be afraid of trail rides?

I love it!! Great photos! Maybe someday the people who own those horses will be out riding, encounter llamas and expect their horses to have the typical spooky reaction, but the horse will be all 'yeah, whatever, llamas'! hahahaha

I have a question - forgive me if this was asked/mentioned before...do you have to work hard to teach the llamas to lead? Do they pull or spook, or are they pretty calm?? I'm very curious!

That is such a cute story. I love how those horses were so afraid and came around to some llama love. Oh and the heart brand, I love it. My favorite shape is hearts and I collect them. Happy birthday! Mine was also last week.

I was a bit nervous about the up coming pictures, I thought there is no way she would post that! Then I remembered Moon Pies little sack and thought, she just might.
I like that you keep me on my toes.

Your sweet llama is such a snuggler.

Thanks for sharing.

That was such a sad love story! Parents are always ruining these things.

What a great way to spend your special day! Is this story between the llama and the horse going to turn into some kind of soap opera?

Hahahaha!!! I am still laughing at your cross-species love affair...lol!!!

I think that it must have been the tatoo, or maybe Cateleya has a thing for "tall, dark, and handsome" men?!

Animals get funny like that sometimes. We have had bull elk respond to mares when they are in heat. Nothing official, but definitely an interest. Weird!

Does Baby Doll live at Val's, or is she getting a refresher on how to behave when leaving or approaching the barn...teeheehee!!

Love your llama adventures!

Melanie

Hi Cheryl :) You're welcome!

Thanks Sugarcreek Farm! It was :)

Hi CeeCee, Me neither, but Baby Doll is with the llamas all the time and isn't phased anymore either.
Pony them, eh? haha Probably not. hehe Baby Doll isn't actually 'afraid' of trail rides, but is just rather lazy and wants to go back to the barn where she can eat and stand around. :)

ANdrea,
O my! Your comment cracked me up. "Llamas like a horse with an edge." I've got to remember that one! hahaha!

Laura,
That would be cool! I was actually thinking of showing my photos to the owner, a neighbor down the road. But I'm just a little afraid of his reaction because he's one of those tough rugged cowboy types. I can't imagine he'd like to know his handsome reining/cutting horse has the hots for a llama! hahaha :)

Oh and as to your question. Llamas are simly easier to walk than dogs. They rarely pull or spook. They follow along quite happily enjoying the walk, curious about everything, but not nervous at all.
I shamelessly admit that I'd rather take my 2 llamas out for a walk then my horse or dog. haha :)

Happy Birthday Egghead! Hope you had a special day. Are you a romantic? Collecting and admiring hearts seems like a romantic thing to do :)

Sugarcreek stuff,
BWAHAHA! You sure do know me well, my friend. If I'd have had THOSE kinds of pictures, I probably would have shared them, too. I'm naughty that way. But I like how you think, and I'm glad I'm able to keep you on your toes :)

Hi Dan :)
I'm so glad you enjoyed the pictures. I was amazed, too. Because usually when we pass by these horse they always freak and run away. This time we just hung out and let the llamas graze, and the horses got curious. Made for some great photo moments, eh?

Hi Christy. What a sap you are. hehe Maybe I should have titled my post "Romeo and Juliet' eh?
hahaa!

Hi Mim. What a great idea! Then I could finally do a post on "Llama Drama"! Love it!!

Howdy Melanie!
You really should meet Cataleya. She is such a flirt and very friendly...to all creatures. But she does seem to have an odd attraction to male horses. I wonder if I'll even be able to get her bred, to a real llama, one day! gah! haha

Oh, and Baby Doll is still at my barn. Val's arena and barn are next to my pasture and paddocks. We live right next door to each other, actually. Baby Doll tends to hang out at the fenceline because she is an 'only-horse' and likes the company of Val's horses next door.

But Val and I have been working with Baby Doll on her barn sour. I'll be posting about that soon. Thanks for asking :)

Hi Wrensong,
I think you're right! Glad you enjoyed this post and thanks for stopping by.

I love the llama photos! And now you have desensitized the horses to the llamas and what a good thing that is. Your llamas must be very patient.

What a lovely little story. I'm so glad you had pictures because it would be all but impossible to imagine a llama and horse behaving like that.

Just amazing that Cataleya behaves like that around horses. Really strange, isn't it?

Animals never cease to amaze. Just when you think you've gotten something figured out, they do something else. Never a dull moment, that's for sure.
