This post is about our German Shepherd dog, Zuni. She is our second German Shepherd dog (GSD) to be a part of our family. Our first, named Cory, lived to be 14 years old before we had to send her over the Rainbow Bridge, due to her suffering from Hip Dysplasia and old age. It devastated us and we vowed to not have anymore dogs.....until one day 10 years later, when Ranchman John felt the pull to stop as he drove by someone selling dogs from the back of their truck, in Albuquerque......one week before Christmas.
Zuni came to us a wormy, sickly, pudgy, cute 8 week old puppy, and we fell in love.
She is now 11 months old. Hard to believe she's been with us almost a year. She's been a real handful, just like puppies usually are, but she's also been fun, silly and very sweet. We named our girl after one of New Mexico's 19 Native American Pueblos.

Zuni Pueblo, NM is the largest of the nineteen New Mexican Pueblos, with more than 700square miles and a population of over 10,000, located in the northwestern part of New Mexico. Zuni Pueblo is considered the most traditional of all the New Mexico Pueblos, with a unique language, culture, and history that resulted in part from their geographic isolation.
The ancient homelands of the Zunis are along the middle reaches of the Zuni River where their cultural ancestors lived for centuries. Near the settlements and villages left by the ancient people, the Zuni Indians built compact villages of multi-storied houses. These were the towns seen by Coronado and his men and, whom called them the "Seven Cities" in the land of Cibola. The mythical Seven Cities of Cibola (Spanish word for "buffalo") lured Coronado to the southwest in 1540 in a treasure quest.
The Zuni people express their lasting cultural traditions through their art: in painting, pottery, jewelry, and fetish carving.

A German Shepherd fetish necklace would be so special, don't you think?

Zuni has grown so much! She seems like a sweetie, I'm guessing she has no GSD "bad habits". (such as killing barn cats)
I tagged you on my latest post :)
Zuni is beautiful! Our puppy is only 13 weeks old, and what a handful! But it's a lovely age... :-)
Love your place, so full of different animals. Did I read right: Nigerian goats? We have Nigerien goats (of the neighbouring countries).
Warm greetings from West Africa,
Esther
What a beautiful dog. Also it was very interesting reading about the Zuni Tribe. Love your blog - found out about it from "arm Dreams".
Zuni is so sweet looking in the last picture.
Zuni is beautiful!! And what a special name. I love hearing how animals get their names. German Shep's are great dogs. We had one as a child, he was kind of a rescue but he got sick and we had to put him down. He had one floppy ear, I guess it'd gotten slammed in a door or something when he was a puppy. His name was Saxon.
What a beautiful pup!
As a kid, we had a silver and black shepherd and she was a wonderful dog.
Does she like life with all the critters?
I like how you post and teach at the same time.
We've always had German Sheperds over the years, my husband had 4 at once in the house when he was a child. They are the smartest most loyal dogs too! We stopped getting them because of the hip displaysia problem. They are still my favorite dogs and Zuni is beautiful. Being somewhat of a Native American history buff, I love the explanation of the meaning behind her name of the Zuni. Glad you found her.
Lisa-
You should think about writing a reader-friendly, history of NM, textbook...honestly...you are that good!
Zuni is beautiful! I love GSD's. When you get a good one, you have a loyal companion for the rest of their lives.
What...no costume yet???? LOL!!!!
What a lovely girl. She looks very intelligent and sweet.
Interesting information about the Zuni too. I want to visit New Mexico soon. Perhaps next year. I'll definitely let you know when I start making plans.
She is so beautiful! Your roadside pup turned into a great looking GSD.
One of our dogs is half GS, and thank goodness for that. The other half is Cattle Dog. The GS side of her makes her a people pleaser, the CD part of her can be bull-headed.
Wow, Zuni is gorgeous!! Look at those ears! German Shepherds are such smart dogs - we had a yellow lab/shepherd cross once that was both beautiful and highly intelligent - thanks for reminding me of our "Susie". How did you ever go so long without loving a dog??
My dad's gonna love this post! :) I've always had a strong affinity to German Shepards, I think die to my own dad's love of them. She is a beautiful girl and I'm glad she is fitting in well with your family.
Zuni looks liek a sweetheart! I can't believe she is only 11 months old. SHe is big!! My mother in law has a GS and she is wild. She doesn't listen at all. She has even bitten a girl and she has bitten my kids a few times. I know GS are great dogs, my MIL is just a bad dog owner. Sigh. Zuni looks like a wonderful girl.
Beautiful. I've always wanted a GSD. Maybe one day.
omgosh, your dog looks so much like mine, it's creepy. gorgeous long dark feminine face, very dark eyes, and a black dove pattern on the top of her head. amazing. mine has been gone many years now, but i hope to see her again when it's my time to go.
wish i could come pet your dog!

What a beautiful creature Zuni has grown to be! Just gorgeous!
What a beauty Zuni is, looks to me as though she likes having her picture taken to - quite the professional model :)
AWWWW, Zuni is SOOO beautiful and cute! Our dog is a GS mix and looks a lot like her. :)
What a beautiful girl. Glad you found me again. ;0)
She is a beauty!
Beautiful dog! I only wish I could decide not to get any more. We have nine!
I love your informative postings. We visited Den's sister years ago and I got to see Chaco Canyon and another site. Also got to Four Corners and Mesa Verde.
Of the sites I visited Chaco was my favorite.
It reminds of this valley. We find many artifacts. I do not know if this was a permanent camp or not. It has been dated by the artifacts from 2000 to 3000 years old.
Thanks for the good information. You can never learn too many things.
Lisa, it's interesting you would write about Zuni - both your beautiful German Shepherd and the Pueblo. Betty's sister is coming in tomorrow and on Thursday we're heading to Silver City for a few days. We're taking the scenic route to get there. We'll take Hwy 53 past El Morro National Monument and we'll go through the Zuni Pueblo before heading South toward the Gila Mountains and Silver City. We'll probably have lunch at Zuni. I'm sure we'll check out their craft shops. If I see a German Shepherd fetish I'll buy it for you.
Regards,
Dan
Yaaaaaaaaay!!!! Lisa bent a little...lol!! ;)
Let me just say that I LOVE your aboriginal, cave-woman, costume!
It is just a tad on the risque side, and you could actually wear something like that around family/kids.
Of course, being six feet tall, you could wear my costumes too...lol!!! The boots would be all the way to my...ahem!!!!
And I agree...we would definitely have a good time...teeheehee!!!
Hi Lisa!
Yep. I got your tag, and I'll be sure to follow through in the next couple days :)
Oh, and I wouldn't trust Zuni around any barn cats. Her chase instincts are way too strong! Gah!
Hi Esther,
Thanks for your wonderful visit. I'm so glad you stopped by. I'll be sure to visit your blog again very soon :)
Hi Linda,
Thanks for stopping by. I'll try to stop by your blog for a visit, too.
Aww, thanks Grammy. I thought so, too.
PG, Thanks for stopping by. I love hearing how animals get their names, too. There are often interesting stories behind them, aren't there?
Thanks Michelle,
I'm glad you enjoyed the post, too. It must come from our homeschooling, because I just can't help myself adding nuggets of interesting info when I post my blog.
Awww! Thanks Arlene. My hubby would love to have a housefull of GSDs or Collies. One dog is enough for me right now, though. lol! I'm glad you enjoyed the Native American facts, too.
Hye Melanie. Uh..please.NO pressure now. lol! If I had to write a book, then it wouldn't be as fun. :)
And I got your costume, girlfriend! Did ya see it? LOL!!!
Oh Carolynn! Thank you! Please do. I'd love for you to stop by for a visit :)
CeeCee, Thanks for the heads up on bull headed CD. I had no idea. GSD can be a little stubborn, too, until they learn who alpha is. They do require strong confidant owners. But they are very sweet and loyal, like you said. :)
C-ing Spots, I know. Isn't she funny with those big bunny ears?
After Cory died we were too sad, and then we were just too busy with twin boys and a new baby girl. So, we just had cats, rabbits and guinea pigs, fish, and kids. And that was quite enough. lol!
Thanks Angie. I hope your Dad checks in. This post was kind of for him. I enjoyed his Raising Kane post very much :)
Hi Andrea, Yes she is one big puppy, isn;t she? lol She can be a wild one, too. She still loves to chew on things and jump up. Things we are still working on and hope she grows out of them. I don't know if I will ever do the puppy thing again. lol!
Hi Coleen,
Thanks. I hope your dreams come true :)
Oh Hi, Lythia! Thanks for stopping by. I'd never noticed the dove pattern before. Neat! Yes, I wish you could come for a visit, too.
Seasonseating farm, Aww thank you :)
Thank you Celeste, I think she loves all the attention she can get. She's a lover and a photo hound. lol!
Hi Mell! Nice to see you here and I'm glad you enjoyed my photos of Zuni.
Hi Mim! Thanks for finding me, or I'd never have found You! lol :)
Thank you Christy!
Gail...NINE dogs??!! Gah! One is enough of a handful for me. lol! Where do you keep all those dogs of yours?
Yes, Chaco is an amazing place. I want to take my kids to visit there soon. It's been years since I've been there and I can't wait to se it again. :)
Hi Dan! Oh you're too sweet! I'd love a GSD fetish necklace! Or even a horse one. But they are so pricey. I do hope you post photos and a journal of your trip, though. I'd love to see where you visit.
Will you be visiting the CatWalk in Glenwood, while you're down in the Gila?
If so let me know, maybe you can check on my letterbox I placed there on the trail. :)
Have a fun and safe trip!
LOL! Melanie!! Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. And I did like those tall black boots. They are very cool! I have the long legs, but I've got big ol calfs. Between the both of us, we're a mess, eh? lol! :)
Zuni is a real beauty! I'm still in awe of your extensive knowledge!
What a beautiful dog. My mother raises german shepherds so I grew up always having at least one and usually more around. They are the best protectors.
You Knew I Would Be Here.
Sorry it took sooo long but my server is slower than a snail right now and has been for days.
THANK YOU for posting an update on Zuni and the Tribe. I enjoyed it all, as you knew I would.
What can I add about Zuni...she is simply BEAUTY FULL. Love her markings and looks. A picture of health. Her stint of not eating didn't hurt her at all. She is what GSD's should look like. Can't wait to see her next year at this time when she reaches her mature growth potential. She could be a show stopper.

Zuni is a beautiful girl! I've been around some amazing GSDs in Search and Rescue and Schutzhund...they are a breed that stands apart from others! Zuni is a perfect name. The SW Native Americans have always held the most fascination for me,especially their history, art and dance/religion.
Do those photo's represent her true colors? I know sometimes they don't show quite right.
