Well, as a Christian, I assure you that I would never dream of leaving Christ out of Christmas. And I didn't. (My Nativity set)

Let me explain.....
I grew up under the assumption that spelling Christmas as 'Xmas' was a way of keeping the holiday separate from its religious beginnings. And I was made to believe that people were so averse to religion that they were x-ing out Christ's name.
But I must admit I was just ignorant and wrong. Not long ago, I discovered that the 'X' in 'Xmas' is actually the greek letter 'Chi', which was a common abbreviation of 'Kristos', Christ's name. The word 'Xmas' is rooted in the heritage of the Church. It is simply another way to say Christmas, drawing on the long history of symbolic abbreviations used in the church.
As with other abbreviations used in common speech or writing (such as Mr. or etc.), the abbreviation 'Xmas' should be pronounced 'Christmas' just as if the word were written out in full, rather than saying "exmas".
(Our Angel Tree-topper made by my dear Aunt)

But I also have no doubt that some folks spell 'Xmas' because they are too busy or lazy to write out the whole word. And it's most likely that some secular people, see 'Xmas' as a way to avoid writing out 'Christ'. And certainly secular and commercial motives use 'Xmas' in ads and signs because it can be larger and more attention-getting in the same amount of space. But those factors do not take away the thoroughly Christian origin of the word 'Xmas'.
(Our living room decorated for Christmas)

Now, with all that said, personally, I prefer to spell Jesus' birthday, 'Christmas'. But I needed an 'X' word for this Alphabet Challenge and I chose 'Xmas'.
So, there. (lol!)
And how do you spell Christmas?
I thought I'd share a few of my favorite ornaments and Christmas decorations with the hope that y'all will share some photos of yours, too.
I collect Western and Southwestern themed decorations. Here are a few.
Santa has a thang for chile peppers. The hotter the better!

I prefer having pricklies remain outside, but this little sombrero-wearing cacti is just so cute!

Real cowboys (and cowgirls) love their chili! Yummy!

Cowboy? No......Cowbear. Awww!

I also have a thing for tall things, like this tall-faced Santa. And I like folk art, too. So this ornament just makes me smile.

Another tall Santa.

And a tall Nutcracker.

I know this isn't a Christmas decoration, but this just goes to show how much I like my stuff, tall. I guess it comes from being a tall gal myself. Though in real life, I sort of wish my horse wasn't so tall, 'cause it's just so hard to haul my hiney up onto my horse without getting a boost from a mounting block, fence or a large rock. Of course, if I had a shorter horse, the poor horse would look like it had 6 legs.

Do you have any holiday collections or themes?
Happy Holidays!

eXcellent eXplanation of Xmas. With that, I will make my eXit.
I think after this I'll have to post some Christmas decorations from our tree on my blog...we tend to get one new ornament every year that represents something that went on that year...like, in 2007, we got a western saddle ornament because that was the year we got Daisy...etc...
I love the Cowbear one! SO cute!!!
X is for Xanadu, which means idyllic, beautiful place...cool word. ;D
Oh I LOVE that tall horse! My favorite color too.
That was a wonderful explanation of the word Xmas because I too was taught that it meant that Christ was EXed out. Thanks again.
I had to send my new camera into Canon for repairs so I can't get any pictures of Christmas decorations...or our beautiful snow. Love seeing yours.
I loved the way you explained the meaning of Xmas, I have in the past wrote Christmas as Xmas because of like you said in being in a hurry or just lazy unfortunately.
Your Angel that your Aunt made is lovely and so are your unusual ornaments. I had a Nutcracker like yours from years ago not sure what happened to it.I haven't got all of my decorations up yet because my daughter is away and she loves doing putting them up so I will have to wait till the weekend.
We don't have many Christmas decorations at home. I miss having a tree up but there is no space to put one where we'd be able to appreciate it :(
Our restaurant however is decorated and pretty.
"X" = XENOLITH
Lisa,
I had never heard that Xmas meant that Christ was exed out. We grew up knowing that it was a shortened version for Christmas(from the Greek letter 'Chi'). An old sister from the Catholic school I attended taught us that in sixth grade. I have never forgotten. I love your decorations.
Tall is elegant and beautiful! The horse is lovely!
Christmas in Swedish is "jul", which, which for what I've heard derives from an ancient Roman winter festival. But Christmas for me is about celebrating the birth of the one who did the greatest ever for all of us, and to give of that love to the ones around us. It's also a season of uniting family, and although my mom will be absent this year, the rest of us are together, in Niger. Who knows, maybe we'll even have a white (dusty) Christmas?? :-)
Greetings from West Africa!
Esther
First off, I LOVE your signature! Cool beans.
Second, thanks so much for this history lesson on Xmas. Now if I ever use that, I will not feel so guilty.
Third, your decorations look great.
Merry Christmas to you.
Thank you for the explanation of Xmas. It seems like we were all taught that it was a way to take Christ out of Christmas. What a shame that this world is so secular that we have to change what Christmas was and is all about. I love your cute decorations.
great post and as always so informative :)
love the ornies...especially santa and the chili peppers ;0
Interesting perspective. I just thought Xmas was a shortcut for Christmas, but I also knew that some religious people took offense. Most of our Christmas decorations are hand-me-downs from relatives or things the kids made in school. I finally found time to decorate just yesterday.
Lisa, I like your new signature! You're so savvy with your computer!!
Your house looks very festive and your fancy ornaments are neat. I especially like your Chili Santa.
I couldn't help but laugh while I was reading this post, because my parents taught me the same thing. Imagine their surprise when I told them (must of been around 17) that they were wrong...lol!!!
Thanks for the Christmas tour of your house! I thouroughly enjoyed it. :)
Well...wish me luck!
I will head out into the winter wonderland to take my finals in about two hours. The kidlets' school is closed yet again, but thankfully my friend is going to watch them all day for me.
PS-I love your signature (how did you do that???) and my "X" word is XRAY. :)
We decorate based on Xylophones. Not really, but it starts with an X LOL. I really like unusual Santas so we have a lot of those. And we've been collecting farm ornaments for years. Logan gets to pick out an ornament every year, so we have some interesting ones from when he was younger. I may post pictures of a few of our favorites. I love the cactus one you have and the Santa with chili peppers.
It's amazing what a little research will reveal. Knowledge is never mis-spent! Beautiful decorations! I've got everything on our tree from vegetables, fruits, santas, angels, horses and various other odd bits, including a pepper or two and a pickle, oh and an angel towards the top and a devil at the very bottom. Interesting!
Great explanation of Xmas. I used to get a bit offended at the spelling and would write it all out but learned just a few years ago about the X standing for Chi. I think that's pretty cool how Christ comes back around and His name is not able to be "X'ed" out. :)
Hey Lisa,
I actually laughed out loud at your six legged horse comment. Guess I pictured it. I have to use a block to get on any horse so don't feel so bad.
Are you getting lots of snow today? We got NOTHING overnight. I was really looking forward to waking up and going sledding in the backyard! Oh well. Guess I'll actually get some work done today!
Jen
Thank you for explaining that Lisa. Sincerely. I did. not. know that and had always been under the assumption that it was a crossing out of Christ's name. I always write Christmas out in full and have always viewed the alternative as a bit of an affront. This clears things up for me. Thanks!
This was an eXcellent post.
X-rays would have been good too!
But I think Xmas was better.
I have known about Xmas since I was in school and had never thought of people thinking it meant taking Christ out of Christmas. How nieve of me!
Great Lesson for Blog School.
Keep 'em coming!
You know, my sister got mad when someone wrote Xmas and I knew there had to be another reason how it came about. And as for the excuse it was those non believing people using it to avoid writing Christ, well, they shouldn't be celebrating anything this time of year but New Years then now should they?? They should have to work and everything, right? I'm not a xenophobe though, so if someone asks, I will tell my opinion and they can share theirs :)
Thank you for the lesson teacher Lisa! I didn't know...now I'm embarrassed that I didn't know.
Love all of your western ornaments...that's what I collect. It's either a horse or western.
Lisa, great post and I love your house - very warm and comfortable.
This will be my last comment until the first of the year as Betty and I leave tomorrow morning for Tennessee.
I wish you and your family a blessed and joy-filled Christmas.
Dan
Love all your southwestern ornaments. I didn't know about the alternate X-in Xmas either. Our Christmas decorations tend to lean toward traditional ornaments and decorations. Garlands, wreaths, poinsettias etc... I guess because we're in the northeast.
That was a neat fact about the "X" for Christmas!! Neat!! I love your pepper ornaments. We kind of have a western theme. I love all your tall Decorations. The tall horse is beautiful. I love it!!
We had a birthday party for Jesus the other day. I know it was early but my oldest is going to his Dad's house for Christmas. Sigh....so, we held a birthday party. We had balloons and streamers and a cake. Then the kids opened up presants that had small papers in them that said things like, "Earth", "Love, "Faith"..and so on. They were gifts from Jesus. IT was a lot of fun and I think the kids got the idea of what Christmas is really all about. Oh, we also told a quick birth of jesus story. LOL!! It was a good night, and the cake wasn't half bad either!!
X is for X-ray
