While we were down in Corrales on Sunday, I decided to place a letterbox in one of my favorite places, The Rio Grande Bosque Nature Preserve. It’s a respite for Albuquerque city dwellers, and even for those us who live in the beautiful rural mountains above the city, because the trails travel beneath huge shady cottonwood trees beside the chocolate colored Rio Grande River.
The cottonwoods haven’t yet leafed out, but when they do, the green contrasts beautifully with the mountains, sky and river. And in the Fall, the bright yellow leaves are a stunning sight to behold.
At 1,885 miles long, the Rio Grande is the fourth longest river in the United States and serves as a natural boundary along the border between the US state of Texas and the country of Mexico. The Rio Grande begins it’s southward journey in the mountains of Colorado, finally ending in the Gulf of Mexico.
Many forms of wildlife call the Rio Grande home or use the river as a place to rest before continuing on their migration journeys.
These Canada Geese made me laugh. They landed noisily on this sand bar, and then became very quiet as they floated away downstream, enjoying their lazy river ride.

What a wonderful post! Beautiful and informative. I enjoyed it very much. Thank you. I love your humor. Wanting to wash you hair in the falls :) Geese are always funny to watch. I have a lame one at my in-laws pond with little deformed wings. He's such a character and funny to watch walk. I'll have to post a pic of him sometime.
What gorgeous photos, nature's beauty in lovely compositions.
Happy Earth Day.
beautiful post ms. lisa...hope you are doing well after all the b-day festivities ^..^
Lovely pictures -- thanks for sharing them. I am always amused by the fact that our geese end up everywhere in the world.
Nice shots, particularly the first one. Dirt paths are among my favorite things to photograph.
Great post! I really enjoyed seeing your neck of the woods....did you paint your header picture? If you, did it's wonderful.....something else we have in common. I have an older post of the last one I did. I haven't had the brushes out lately! Have a great evening! Luanne
The Rio Grand is a beauty! Love the geese, and the view of the MT.s is great!
What a beautiful place! I just might have to take a trip to New Mexico some day! It looks so gorgous there!
Lovely spot!
Beautiful photos Lisa. I especially like the first one of the trail. That trail just beckons to me...
Your pictures are so big and colorful. How do you get them to post so big? Or, is it just your new camera?
Great road trip!!
Beautiful shots. What wonderful views. I can see myself walking on that path along the water.
Lovely! Looks like a nice trip.
Great post, river, information, and photos! :) I need to do a road trip across the US and see all of these amazing places on everyone's blogs!
You have some fantastic scenery around you--it's so nice to be reminded of the amazing diversity this continent has to offer. That first picture has lovely light; it almost looks painted.
Looks like you are getting out and about! Wonderful pics, you make me miss NM...

Great photos. Really nice shots of the Rio Grande.
You were in Corrales??? You could have stopped and seen my son's camel! And...the birthday horse that Mical won't let me have. Boo Hoo.
Thanks for sharing this beautiful place with us. Thanks, too, for visiting my site.
Beautiful! I spent many years growing up in Albuquerque. Your shots make me a bit homesick.
Nice shot of my countrymen and a fine pair they are too.
NM tourism should totally be employing you! I loved all these beautiful pictures so much. They made me want to head down to the river and take some shots.
Ahhhh. Canadian Geese. We have waaaaaay too many of those by us, but I still love looking at them. And taking a lazy river ride makes them even better :) Very very cool pics. Gal above is right, you SHOULD be employed for tourism :) Maybe some extra freelance moolah in the pocket??
