Maybe some of you have noticed the music currently playing on my Playlist?
On Saturday night Val invited me to join her to come watch her son, Trevor, play in his band, at the downtown library. Of course, I was excited about seeing and hearing her creative, talented son play his music…and I wasn’t disappointed. He rocked it!
And his band, Spring Loaded Hotdog, were pretty cool, too. You can read more about them, over at Val's Fantastyk Voyage Blog.
And if that wasn’t good enough, afterwards, we walked just a few blocks from the library to attend a free concert in the downtown Civic Plaza. And not just any free concert……...................we saw GIN BLOSSOMS!!!
Val laughs at me because I’m one of those kinds of people who likes a particular song, but can’t remember who plays it. When she called me and told me about Gin Blossoms I wasn’t sure who they were, so I immediately went online to pull up their music so I could listen to it. And I was surprised to discover that every song I listened to, I recognized and remembered jamming to in my late teens and early twenties. hah!
(Robin Wilson is the lead singer)
(He was totally looking at me here, don’t you think?)
(Guitarist Jesse Valenzuela and Scott Johnson)
(Guitarist Bill Leen)
(Not seen, because of my camera angle and where we were sitting, is drummer John Richardson.)
The concert totally rocked! The music was really great, there were lots of people, but not too crowded, and the weather for an outdoor concert was close to perfect.
And I had to laugh at the singer, Robin Wilson, because at one point he spied someone interesting in the audience dancing. The guy, whom I named ‘Madrid Man’, because he reminded me of the funky cool artist-type people who live in Madrid, NM, was wearing a stylin’ black felt hat. Robin asked if he could wear ‘Madrid Man’s’ hat, and then he wore it for the entire concert. Hah! (There he is looking at me again. See?!)
What made me smile even more was discovering that Robin digs hats. Cool hats……hats that are unique and fun. Ranchman John and even Val, laugh at my funky straw Ranch Girl hat that I wear everywhere. I admit it’s a crazy hat and looks kind of wonky, but when I wear it, it makes me happy.
So this picture I found online is for Ranchman John and Val. (Check out Robin’s cool hat, guys!)
(Robin thinks my hat is cool, so there! *sticking tongue out* hah!)
Like a couple of groupies, Val and I stuck around to meet the band members and say ‘thanks’ afterwards.
This roadie/guitarist guy, Darryl Icard was handing out Fender guitar picks with Gin Blossoms stamped on them. Very cool! He gave me two, one for each of my guitar playing twinlings. Darryl has actually played guitar for Gin Blossoms, one night, a while back, when their bassist passed out on stage. hah!
(Darryl didn’t mind posing for a photo with me)
Scott Johnson was also happy to pose for a photo or two, with both Val and I.
And Robin hung out and chatted with us at the end of the line. A genuinely nice guy.
It’s been years since I’ve attended a real concert. I think it may have been Journey in the 80’s. hah! I had such a great time, I think this may start a new interest for me. I don’t think I’ll be a groupie as I’m not all that loyal towards any one band or style of music, but I do love listening to live music. So, hopefully there’ll be more concerts in my future. (hint, hint) hah!
So, what and when was the last concert you attended? Do you have any concerts you’re planning to go see this summer?

Looks like you girls had so much fun! 2 bands in one night! Yeah!
I remember the Gin Blossoms. I am like you, I like a song, but can't remember who sings it!
The last concert I went to was Carrie Underwood, my sis and I just had to go! It was great!
When I was alot younger, I went to so many concerts, I've seen about every genres of music! I even was in the mosh pit for Alice In Chains, with a broken rib! Ah! That hurt! Oh, to be young again!
I was the concert queen back in my 1970s heyday. The last concert I went to was either Lyle Lovett or Matchbox 20.
I've been to community concerts, but can't remember the names of any of the bands. I've also attended several symphonies. 10 years ago for our 10th anniversary, my husband to me to a Vonda Shepard concert. She's the lady who sang the theme song for the Ally McBeal show. She was fantastic. As far as really rockin' concerts go, it's been too long. Remember Fleetwood Mac and the Grateful Dead?
Y'all look like you were having a blast...and yes, it looked like Robin was looking straight at you!
The last couple of concerts I've been to are The Moody Blues, Phil Collins and about 2 years ago I saw Alice Cooper at our county fair. No plans for this summer though.
Wow - that sounds like a really fun day. I liked the Gin Blossoms back in the 90s... How cool that you stuck around to meet the band - most places it is almost impossible to do that!
My last concert was Bon Jovi - 2 years ago, I think...
I would love to see Journey - I love the sound of that guy's voice!
Nah, he was looking at me! ;)
That was a lot of fun, wasn't it?
I actually met Alice Cooper a few years back and posed for a photo but never got it- camera phones, gah!!
I've been to the Symphony a couple of times this past winter and I saw my son play with his band, Spring Loaded Hot Dog at their school talent show.
I saw Def Leppard and Journey almost 3 years ago with my son and daughter.
In 2004, I saw Bowie 3X with my husband.
wowza...looks like a lot of fun. geesh i have not been to a concert since, too long ago to admit. used to attend many in my younger years.
great pics lisa.
hugs
LOL- for a minute I thought you photoshopped your hat on him. heehee
Yes, it's funny how similar and different our posts are.
FYI- Trevor's band is Spring Loaded Hot Dog. No 'The' and not plural. It's SLHD for short. (go figure!)
Well, Trevor's got the pouty rock star look down and all the right moves. ;o) Good for him getting out there, like that and doing what makes him happy.
I confess I've never heard of the Gin Blossoms. I don't remember the last concert I attended. It was a LONG time ago and clearly didn't leave a bit impression.
I have recently attended a local jazz bar and completely enjoyed it. It's a much more intimate setting but still an awesome experience watching & listening to talented musicians.
WOW how fun! Im so jealous !
I sure do enjoy outdoor concerts, i went to see the Go Go's and B52's in Texas, that was wicked fun.
Glad to see youu are getting up and around!
That is so awesome! I love the Gin Blossoms. It has been at least 10 years since I went to a concert. I used to go to them all the time. I grew up near DC and went to all the little clubs and saw many big name bands before anyone had heard of them. I really want to take Logan to see The Bare Naked Ladies, he really likes them.
I've been to quite a few concerts at The Journal--Brad Paisley, Toby Keith, Kenny Chesney, Def Leppard, etc. My friend's husband works out there and gets us amazing seats.
Nothing beats an outdoor concert. So fun you got all those pictures.
Sounds like it's just what you needed and a lot of fun! Cool pics!
Wow, looks like you guys had such a fun time. I think the absolute last concert I went to may have been Rob Zombie at the House of Blues in Cleveland, Ohio. Went with my son, and Rob put on an AWESOME show. One of his best -- he had a movie debuting that day and it was doing really well, so he was pumped.
I've always loved live music -- my friends back in Ohio go to local venues to see small local bands all the time. I miss that!
OMG!!! I cannot believe how old they all look now. I used to listen to them in high school, and their music always takes me back....
What a fun day! And Val's son is in a band? I had no idea. My last concert was the Counting Crows with Augustana.Good times, good times...
PS-How is that knee of yours doing??
That is some awesome music. It does soooooooo look like he's looking at you in those 2 pictures! WEIRD!!!
I might go see some rock concerts this summer... It's possible...
That's great you had such a rocking good time! ;-)
I can't sit in the seats provided at most concerts anymore, though my husband and I usually go to The Old Time Fiddler's Convention in Athens, AL in the fall. You can walk around and look at the crafts and listen at the same time, and stop at different groups holding jam sessions.
Probably the last "for real" concert I attended was the Beach Boys. Went to a Gordon Lightfoot one once, and BJ Thomas... just don't get the chance very often!
WAY TOO COOL DUDETTES!!!
Ok, see, now you've gone and made me REALLY jealous! So cool that the concert was free AND that you got to meet the band members! I just love the Gin Blossoms. Something about their melody and the lead singer's voice...I've yet to hear a song of theirs that I don't like. Such a fun day!! Great pics! ;)
