Dem Bones

“Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones,
Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones,
Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones,
Now shake dem skeleton bones!”

My twinling son, Jax and I went on a hike the other day on our neighbor’s property, over on the ridge that I once rode my mare on, and that we now pasture lease. Most of the land on either side of the ridge is pasture/meadow, but the ridge has a network of trails to explore.

IMG_8014

Baby Doll was too busy eating to pay us much attention.

IMG_8015

IMG_8016

We invited her to come along with us on our hike, but she mostly just ignored us.

IMG_8028

She finally walked over to us. But I’m sure she was thinking, “This better be good”

IMG_8030

When she realized we had no carrots to make it worth her while, she was kind of grumpy.

IMG_8031

So, we had to go on our hike without the spoiled princess. Jax led the way.

This ridge, if it weren’t for the fences, we could hike directly into the National Forest and onto BLM land. Deer, coyotes, bear and even mountain lions have walked this land at some point, and probably still do. We often hear the coyotes howling at night on the ridge, from our house.

Our neighbor uses this land to graze cattle and leases it out to folks with livestock, like us. So, it wasn’t too surprising to find cattle bones off the trail.

“The toe bone's connected to the foot bone,
The foot bone's connected to the ankle bone,
The ankle bone's connected to the leg bone,
Now shake dem skeleton bones!”

IMG_8316

“The leg bone's connected to the knee bone,
The knee bone's connected to the thigh bone,
The thigh bone's connected to the hip bone,
Now shake dem skeleton bones!”

IMG_8318

“The hip bone's connected to the back bone
The back bone's connected to the neck bone,
The neck bone's connected to the head bone,
Now shake dem skeleton bones!”

IMG_8311

My always entertaining twinling son, Jax insisted that I take some photos of him modeling the latest fashions in bone wear.

Jax talked me into bringing some of the bones back home with us. They were much heavier than they looked……especially hiking uphill.

IMG_8330

Yep, they were heavy. Made heavier by the two of us laughing while trying to sing “Dem bones” lol!

“The finger bone's connected to the hand bone,
The hand bone's connected to the arm bone,
The arm bone's connected to the shoulder bone,
Now shake dem skeleton bones!”

IMG_8331

This is a view from the ridge, looking down towards my neighborhood, on the left.

IMG_8340

Ranchman John happened to see us struggling with our weary bones and drove over to give us a ride back home. And now we have a Bone Garden.

IMG_8328

Why? Heck if I know. But Jax is happy about it.

As for me, I can’t get that crazy song out of my head.

“Dem bones, dem bones, gonna walk around
Dem bones, dem bones, gonna walk around
Dem bones, dem bones, gonna walk around
Now shake dem skeleton bones!”

Kinda creepy, kinda cool. lol

The old guy that owned Kimfer's parents place before them used to bury his horses out in the pastures. We still find bones, mostly fragments, on occasion.

you have such a gorgeous place to live. I want to move there!!

The farmer who used to own our land warned us that he took a backhoe and buried a car out there somewhere. So whenever we're planting and hit a rock I say 'I found the desoto!' :)

That weathered jawbone has a strange beauty to it. I love the lines.

Oh Lisa! You crack me up! The bone song reminds me of the Tracy Byrd song "Drinkin' Bone"-
"The drinkin' bone's connected to the party bone, the party bone's connected to the stayin' out all night long, she won't think it's funny and I'll wind up all alone, the lonely bone's connected to the, drinkin' bone" I know I missed a lyric or something in there, but I love that song!
Jax had me laughing so hard! Love the goofy faces! The picture's with the clouds, Wow! The clouds look from out of this world! You do have such amazing scenery!!

Boys are so goofy. Mine was the same way, and at 23, still is!

Cool find. My DD loves to come upon old bones and wonder where they came from, why they aren't all there anymore, what the animal looked like, etc.

WOW! LOVE THAT VIEW! Neat hike! I love to do this. I am anxious to see how your "bone" garden develops.

Great post! I love to explore places like that! When we lived on the river, we had an old homestead across it from us. We always wanted to do some digging to see if we could find anything, but never made it over there.

I notice Rojo's gone from your banner. Bye bye, handsome lad, Miss Lisa shared you with the world, so you'll never be forgotten!

How in the world did you know the words to that song? I've heard it, but I'd never know what the actual words were.

There are so man rocks everywhere - do you have to keep BD shod?

Lisa.. now I want to see the bone garden..I bet it is cool!

Your part of this world is so cool, also I sure hope your healing up soon, as that brace does not look fun :)

I have an elk skull in my horse trailer right now...trying to figure out what to do with it. Perhaps a bone garden is just the thing!

Finding some kind of animal bones in the hills near my house was my first introduction to death when I was a child. I took my mother up there with me to see them, because I wasn't quite sure what they were. It took a while for me to assimilate that living things die and mammals have skeletons that remain when everything else is gone. On another note, all this hiking your doing is probably a great replacement for the physical therapy you are missing. Keep using that knee and you'll be out of that brace in no time. (Okay, maybe I should mention time, because I know that's a sore subject.)

We have a good number of deer bones in our neighborhood and one day my husband and daughters came back with a whole bucket full. Then they painted them. Then they left them lying around everywhere until I convinced them it was time for a burial.

I'm glad to be rid of dem bones! LOL

I LOVE the picture of Jax when he walking and has those bones arranged on different sticks. Very tribal, and also very Lord of The Flies-ish. :)

There is something quite intriguing about old bleached out bones, I don't blame Jax for wanting to gather them up. We used to have a really neat collection of cool bones in Zambia. Hippo and Croc skulls are really neat :)

Lisa, what a hike! Glad you were able to get out and enjoy the country side by walking! Yay!!!
Funny, funny pictures of Jax with the bones. Can't wait to see the "bone garden" when it's done, that will make for some interesting photos I'll bet.
Love the picture of your town, beautiful!!!
