Trick Pony

During the SASS End of Trail WIld West Festival we had the privilege of meeting a smart horse, named Lucky Joe, and a talented cowboy named Dan Mink.

They were the famous duo of The Rhinestone Roper Show.

We were a little early for the show and had the pleasure of meeting them. Even when not in show mode, Lucky Joe likes to play with hats. Here he is with his protégé in training, Handsome Jack.

Dan is a trick roper and knows how to spin butterflies and rollovers, ocean waves, wedding ring loops, flat loops, dog trots, body juggles, hand shakes and lift-ons.

He enjoys teaching other how to rope, too. Dan invited my twinling son, Jem, up to the stage to learn how to spin a lasso. It looks a lot easier than it is.

But it’s his paint horse, Lucky Joe, that steals the show.

Dan Mink  is the winner of the 2007 World Champion Gun Spinner  Award and the 2005 Joe Bowman Gun Handling Showmanship Award!
The Guns that won the west are featured in the Rhinestone Roper Show.  Dan uses .45 caliber single action six shooters and .45 caliber lever action Winchester rifles.  He straps on his fancy double rig holster and performs well known gun spinning maneuvers and tosses with one gun, some with two and some alternately.  As the pistols twirl, Dan jokes and explains the tricks, how the guns work, and gives safety tips to the kids.

Dan Mink is also a two-time inductee into the International Knife Thrower's Hall of Fame!  The Bowie knife was a favorite tool on the frontier.  Dan takes great pride in the gasps that he hears as he throws fourteen-inch knives and closely outlines his assistant's body.  "The Wheel of Death" is a 6 foot spinning wheel.  The assistant’s body is spun with the wheel and Dan attempts to throw the knives amidst the blur and plant them around her body.

This was Handsome Jack’s first time performing under the big tent in front of a lot of people. But everyone thought he did a pretty good job, and Jack didn’t even get stage fright.

IMG_7215

But Handsome Jack sure has some pretty high standards to live up to.

But with The Rhinestone Roper and Lucky Joe teaching him all the all ropes, Handsome Jack will no doubt become just as talented and a star in his own right.

The End.

(Ps. Call me crazy, but I couldn’t help but wonder if Dan had also ‘stage-trained’ his horses not to use the stage as their potty. I mean, the show was an hour long. The ponies came out and performed for 30 minutes of that time, and neither one of them pooped or peed out there. I don’t know about your horse, but if my mare was out there for 30 minutes, being fed grain treats, she would have had to relieve herself at least once. So, yah, I’m all impressed over the horses and their fancy tricks, but if Dan has figured out a way to potty-stage-train them, that impresses me even more. haha!)

Check out The Rhinestone Roper Show to learn more about Dan and his trick ponies.

How fun Lisa! So cute, my favorite was when he was on his back sitting on him....I've done that with Romeo since he was little only he's ride side up!LOL! There's more commentary over at my blog on tying a little foal and Kate had a couple of comments.....if you're interested in reading!

WOW, that's so cool, love the videos and the pictures!

I used to lease a horse that never went to the bathroom while you rode because it had been trained not to...as soon as you took off the saddle and turned around, however, she couldn't hold it anymore. :-P

My kids and I watched the videos and got a kick out of the slow to respond horse. I don't know if that was part of the act or if the horse was just having low energy day. No kidding about bathroom breaks. As soon as I get on Gabbrielle, she feels the pressure and has to go.

Hmmm. Word Verification = reward

You know what really gets me about these sorts of shows----that the horse will do just about anything it's asked, without arguing and I couldn't even get my horse to leave the barn!
I know, training is everything. Some people just have a gift. I didn't. My horse had baggage that I just couldn't get him to let go off, though.

Great story and pictures!! Thanks for sharing. :)

PS. if you find out how he trained the horses not to pottie on stage, maybe I can train Gil and Poke to go outside the barn!! LOL

Looks like it was a really great show! I really enjoyed those videos. It always makes me wonder just how much time and work those guys put into their horses. To make them do all those tricks!! Super cute!!

Goodness, that is fun! I thought his horse was so pretty, great markings. Looks like Jem had a blast up there!! But that knife trick? Um, no way would I be his assitant! That is scary! :)

His horses may have been trained to relieve themselves on command. Then he would get them to do their business before going on stage.
OR he could follow a feeding/watering schedule that would make it less likely for them to need to relieve themselves during a show.

My,my, my! very amazing photos. You captured the actions very well. Lisa, I have not been on an actual balloon ride, but I experiened just the tethered ride for about 15 minutes 70 feet above the ground. It was very amazing. I want to go back and experience the real thing.

How lucky you were to be able to see and do all these things.

I admit I don't know anything about horses - this was great experience for me. It was all magic - up to the point where the horse poop was discussed :) Handsome guy and beautiful animals. Your son did well with the lasso - a bit more practice :) It is an interesting show you manage to witness. Thank you for sharing with us - feels like a first row!

I'm so glad you did a post on this! I love the horses. Very pretty. :o)

I know what you mean about not pooping on stage. Panama tends to poop when he's nervous or being worked. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to teach them not to? It would be especially handy if you're riding somewhere where you're supposed to pick up after your horse!

Thanks for sharing your fun day! You do take amazingly clear crisp photos. Are you a professional photographer, and if not, why not?

I can't believe a horse can be trained to do that! I just think about the horses we have--I cannot imagine a one having that kind of potential. Loved the video and pictures.
