It seems that Baby Doll’s got a new boyfriend. It’s my neighbor’s gelding who is 12 years younger than my mare.
Yep, she’s robbing the cradle.
She looks rather smug about it, too.
For almost two months I’ve been keeping my mare on some leased pasture land owned by a neighbor who lives on the other side of the ridge beside our small neighborhood. He leases it out for cattle grazing in the Spring and for horses the rest of the year. Several of my neighbors lease this land from him, too, so currently there are six horses grazing together and forming a small herd on the several hundred fenced acres.
I can actually see them from my house and from my barn most of the time.
What? You can’t see them? Look above and to the left of the metal pole.
No? How about now?
I have a tendency to use my little camera like a pair of binoculars so I can see things that my naked eyes can’t see as well.
I’ll zoom in a little closer for you.
My mare is close enough that I can still check on her every day by just walking or driving over. I’m usually over there every day to refill the 500 gallon stock tank, feed her a little extra food since the grass isn’t all that great, or to groom and just hang out with her.
I usually try to bring something for Baby Doll, some carrots, horse cookies, grain, some loose minerals and her vitamins, or a flake of hay. I want her to be happy to see me and to also come when I call her. And no matter where she is now, I can just call out to her and she comes running to me.
I love that she is free to live like a horse, moving freely and comfortably on all that acreage with other horses. It’s also interesting to watch her behavior and see how much of an alpha horse she is, or at least, thinks she is.
I must admit when I first started entering into the pasture with six horses it was a little bit intimidating, especially when I came bearing food. Baby Doll would try to take over and act as the alpha, claiming me and the food as her own, chasing off any other horse that came near, threatening to kick them. I didn’t like that behavior and I certainly didn’t feel safe. So, I took control and became the alpha instead. I got big, real big, stood up to and chased away the other horses. I claimed my space, and my horse. And it didn’t take long before the other horses kept their distance while I spent time with my mare.
When I first brought Baby Doll over to this leased pasture, she was nervous, worried and basically ignored me while she kept calling for other horses.
But, ever since I’ve proven myself to her as a source to be reckoned with, as an alpha mare that she can trust to watch her back as she eats, and as an alpha that the other horses respect, too, she doesn’t ignore me anymore. In fact, Baby Doll will stand beside me, un-haltered, in a several hundred acre field, even when the other horses move away out of her sight.
She won’t even call to them. She will stand still and patient as I groom her, get the knots out of her tail, pick up her feet, and spray her with fly spray. If I walk in the opposite direction of the other horses, she follows me, un-haltered, at liberty. Licking and chewing.
I don’t know where this will lead. I’m just taking it one day at a time. It’s all a learning process, for my mare, and for me.

On another note: Has anyone else been enjoying the Perseid Meteor Showers this past week? My kidlets and I have been staying up late and into the early morning the last two nights to watch the exciting night show of bright white meteors trailing across the sky like rockets. Last night we lost count after 40 meteors! If you haven’t done it yet, and you have some nice dark skies, sit or lay down outside, face to the sky…and enjoy the celestial show!

Baby Doll looks very happy! Saw your note on my blog and yes, it is okay to have a horse (like "our" Baby) and just enjoy being around them. Just the touch is good for the soul!
Thanks for the reminder about the meteor shower. We are camping this weekend & hope to catch a glimpse!
That sounds like a great time in your day and in hers. When you are ready to get on again, she will take care of you.
Wish I could see the meteor shower here--too much light polution!
Baby Doll looks, Happy, Healthy and Gorgeous! What super times to spend with your horse, and to do all that in the pasture with all the other horses, and she will ignore them, and stay with you, is awesome!!!! Love pictures of Baby Doll. You should put an indian blanket on her, feathers in her halter, and create an indian pony! What PHOTO OPS for that!
What a nice post on your mare! Her boyfriend is a cutie - she has good taste!
How long are the meteors going on for? Can anyone see them? I mean I am all the way in o'Canada.
That is so wonderful that Babydoll is starting to trust you. Indigo is the exact same way, but she runs from the rest of the herd.
Last year when I was feeding my horses the gelding and younger mare of mine started fighting over who was gonna get food first. I was right in the middle of it. This was gonna be a no go. Before I got bit I went nuts swinging the bucket I had and hollering like a mad woman. They both took off like someone lit a firecracker under their tails.
Moral of this story, they are not worried about fighting each other now, they are worried about who I am going to bite next so they stay back when I feed until I leave.
I'm glad you got the opportunity to see her in a herd. How horses interact with other horses reveals a lot about their personalities and helps you figure out what you need to do to get what you want out of them.
Glad to see BD happy and getting to be a horse.
I was so excited when I moved to the ranch and Star got to hang out in a pasture with her Mare Frens.
IT has changed her personality 180.
For the better.
Are we going to see on a horse soon?
Okay, second time around for this...
Great to see BD in that setting!
You are going it slow and that os great. What ever you decide ois good Liss with her and any horse in the future..it all is a learning time.
When I think of herdboundness..I believe all horses are, by degrees. They certainly are not bound to us!
Barn Sour applies to my mares behaviour, brought on by pain..I do think I pushed too hard and she reacted.
Thanks for the nice words of concern my dear. It could have been far worse than it was and I am sooo thankful. And thankful that I was to volunteer this whole week-into next with a horse camp and then camping...I have had no guilt cancelling that all, and staying home to heal!
see ya around!

Interesting how your relationship with her continues to grow. So much better than when you were scared of her. How are you doing in your physical recovery?
I knew there must be something interesting going on in the sky because after a couple weeks of clear skies we are suddenly completely socked in by clouds. No meteors for us!
Love the pictures of your horse. Getting to know them by watching the order of hierarchy in a herd is so interesting. Who they choose as friends, who is the alpha. All very telling.
I'm so glad you are spending time with her and enjoying it! Absolutely nothing wrong with not riding. Maybe someday you will again, if not...that's okay too. You've read about my gang here! ha
I sooo wish you lived closer. Freckles (the leopard appie) would make a wonderful mount for you.
HUGS
We saw a couple of meteors last evening...very cool!
This is a great post about you and Baby Doll...keep up what you're doing...like you said, you don't know where it may lead, but it's obviously on the right path! Well done Lisa!!
I think its wonderful that you are developing a relationship with her, that you are finding your own inner alpha mare and that she feels safe with you.
That said, sometimes the ground just doesn't translate to the saddle, at least in my experience.
BD behavior does remind me of Canyon. He was a horse unhappy with his place in the herd, always striving to get higher but never able to achieve it. He was a second man, or third. And I was the wrong person for that personality. I don't know what is the right personality, frankly.
Maybe it was a case of wanting/needed a very dominate personality to feel safe. I'm not experienced enough to convey that in the saddle.
I hope you can get to a place to have a horse you can enjoy on the ground and in the saddle too.
Hey BabyDoll, he's good looking, you "cougar."
Lisa, I just have to say I am SO PROUD OF YOU for taking charge with Baby Doll. It sounds like it was just what she needed! You rock!
Also, I agree with the others who said it's fine if you don't ride her, and just enjoy her company. I think as long as you're not letting her get lazy and forget her manners around you, it's not going to hurt anything. Also I believe that the most rewarding parts of a relationship with a horse come from what you do with them on the ground. Riding can be fun but it doesn't support a relationship as much as other ways of interacting.
Your blog is so interesting to me, and I love your photos, especially of the horses and of Baby Doll. I was so happy that you found a way to relate to her as an alpha mare, because that is the way to develop a true companionship with a horse. That is all described in Basic Training for a Safe Trail Horse with subtitle of Eliminating the Fear Factors. I hope you have a copy of that little paperback. It's available at Amazon.com or autographed from safetrailhorse@gmail.com
Such a pretty lady, and a "cougar" too! Good for her. :)
I'm glad BD can be just a horse. We felt the same way about Gletta's new home. Keep up the good work.
As far as the meteors, if they want me to see them they have to show up before 10 PM. I used to stay up in my younger days, but not now.
Good for you and the kids.
Dan
Wow Lisa! I'm proud of you! That is SO awesome that Baby Doll has picked you!! I bet it feels amazing to know you have that bond back with her and I bet she loves it too. Good job! And it is nice to see a horse just being a horse.
Now does that make you a horse whisperer?
So good to hear you bonding this way, I can't seem to stand tall enough to run my others away when I am working with just one.
That bond is a wonderful feeling, good for you!! :)
I love being able to just watch the herd dynamics and horses being horses... not that I get to do that alot. Usually have not enough time when I'm out at the barn. Guess that's just one more reason I can't wait until we find a place!
You have a cougar horse!! lol Likes the younger boys. hehe It sounds like it's just what your girl needed. Some companionship of her species. Maybe she'll calm down a little with the space to run and some friends. I bet it feels good for her to "choose" you over the other 4 legged friends.
As for the meteor showers? We live in the middle of the city and probably wouldn't be able to see them, on top if it being a fullish moon. I'd love to see pictures if you get any though :)
Lisa, amazing job! Baby Doll is really connected to you, Gilly is like that with me too. When I had him in a field with Lacy and I wanted him to come to me, she would try and herd him away. He would always run around her to get back to me. What a good feeling that is to know your horse wants to be with you.
Love the pictures of you Baby Doll, she is a beautiful horse! Glad she is out just being a horse, horses need that, Gilly only has Pokey but at least he has a companion, someone to bond with and play with. Love to watch them play.
~Jane
Way to go girlfriend!!! You and Katie are learning how to own your space and get respect in return. :)
I also agree with you about taking everything one day at a time with BD. Baby steps are good-have you ever seen What About Bob??? LOL!!!!
Baby Doll is a cougar! Who knew ;)
Sadly we have way too much light polution here to see the meteor showers, I bet they are magical.
If you haven't read Joe Camp's "The Soul of a Horse: Life Lessons from the Herd", then do so. What an awesome read. It is perfectly fine to just "be" with your horse. I loved this book and honestly, I think I'm going to read it again.
I didn't get a chance to see any meteor showers, not because I didn't want to. With my new job I have to get up at 5:30, so that doesn't leave me with the latitude to stay up until midnight or so. I miss my free and easy days at home!!
