With this, our second snowfall of the season (we’ve actually had three, but the first one was just snow flurries), I decided I was curious about what is considered typical snowfall up here at 7,000ft in the Central Mountains of New Mexico.
So, I went back into my archives, and thank goodness for labels, because I was able to quickly locate all of my snow related posts going back to our first winter here in 2007.

So, this winter will be helpful in proving what is normal or typical regarding the snowfall in our area each year. I just hope that we don’t get one of those late Memorial Day weekend snowfalls or the chances of my fruit trees producing will be slim to none. And by the time the first day of summer rolls around, we can’t help but be fed up with snow, even though it’s beautiful during the holidays. And the snow does a great job at blanketing and softening all of our dead, brown grass around here.
But Sunday morning, the chickens weren’t as happy to see the white stuff and insisted on being fed inside their house.
I was relieved to see that the Mrs. Cotton and her chicks survived the cold night in their temporary coop, too.
(Underneath those angled board on the right is a little house filled with straw and shavings, and underneath the left board is their feeder and waterer)
I’ve been letting all 4 of them out into the main coop during the day, but Mrs. Cotton isn’t the top chicken with all of my hens.
And even though she tries her best to stand up to them and defend her chicks, she’s smaller and ends up flattened and defeated with a couple of them.
So, I don’t want to risk putting her and the chicks in at night with my entire flock just yet.
(Clockwise from far right: Barred Rock Betty, Cuckoo Marans Mandy, and Welsumer Wanda)
Besides, for now, Mrs. Cotton seems much more comfortable herding her babies into the temporary coop at the first sign of trouble. It’s easier to defend them in that confined space, too.
After I was done feeding, watering and spreading straw for the chickens, it was time to head to the barn. Of course, Baby Doll starts whinnying and nickering to me as soon as I step foot out of the door. Actually the nickering is a new behavior from my mare. She’s only been doing that for about two months, and she does it whenever she sees me for the first time, even when it’s not time to be fed and even if she is already busy eating.
I’m not sure what has changed, considering I’ve owned her now for going on three years and can’t remember her nickering to me in this way, but I do think the nickering is rather sweet.
Of course, she seems to be the most eager and happy to see me in the morning because she knows she’s getting her carrots first thing, followed by a cupful of grain and then her hay. For dinner she just gets her hay, so breakfast is a special deal for her.
And the llamas, goats and sheep act like they are starving no matter how much or how often they are fed, or how wide their bellies.
More, please!
Jenna loves to go with me to the barn every time I head up there. She’s very helpful with refilling all the water buckets, too. And her favorite thing to do is slop around the mud.
(She has a few years before she grows into her old hand-me-down barn coat)
When I got back to the house and decided to check on my flock again, I noticed that my trio of fancy chickens, including Mr. Cotton, Phyllis Diller, and Sid Vicious hadn’t left the chicken house and seemed to be in some sort of important meeting.
What do you think they were up to? Shall we have a little Name-That-Caption contest?
Whoever’s caption makes me laugh the loudest wins a hat or scarf (your choice), hand-knit by me.
(PS: You’ll have to give me a couple weeks to knit your hat or scarf as I’m still behind in getting my Pay-It-Forward goodies made and sent out. I’m such a slacker! Don’t hate me. gah!)
Ok, so go ahead. What do you think my Silkie Rooster, Polish Rooster and my Polish Hen were up to?
Contest ends this Friday (11/20) at Midnight!

LOL.. Looks like the crew is plotting a way to "wing it" south east to me Lisa ;) It's a "snow boycott"!
And I cant say as thought I blame them! hehehe
Great pix as always girl. Keep 'em coming please- its my break each day from reality here...
It's the Winter Meeting of the LOR Chicken Coop HOA.
Agenda? Installing HVAC directly into the coop, tenant complaints of noisy chicks and upgrades to the alarm system.
Phyllis is saying to Sid, "How the heck did this snowball get in here? I say we chuck it outside before it melts."
Dobbie cracks me up in all those pictures of Baby Doll. That ear is always on alert.
Wow... we are still in the 60's around Atlanta Georgia. We have been spoiled this year.
What is your average yearly snowfall Lisa?
The white guy is moulting, did you see all those feathers outside?
Great pictures. BD is just happy to see you. Nickering is a good sound.

"We took a vote. Fluff gets to be your next Pioneer Woman Recipe!"
Love the SNOW! It came close to us today, but close only counts in horseshoes....
"Girl, if you can't fluff up your feathers..get out of the hen house!"
They're planning a surprise party for Mrs. Cotton when she and the chicks join the flock!
(Nice pics)
Glad I don't have snow yet. Love your pictures as usual.
From Chicken Run:
They're *chickens*, you dolt. Apart from you, they're the most stupid creatures on this planet. They don't plot, they don't scheme, and they are *not* organized.
Looks like the chickens get some cold feet!! I don't know how they do it!
Love the chicken meeting, but I am so not good at captions!
I can't believe how much snow you get, I guess being at 7,000 ft you would get a lot!
this "snowbird" does love snow...once a year at a fablous MT. resort with a great spa and horse drawn cariages!!! I sure hope you have an easier winter,,,but the godd thing is you will NOT be in that damn tower thsi year! YEA!!!!
Hmmmm. Looks cold! Well, I am not that funny of a person. I love to laugh but it is hard for me to be funny. I try but I am a lousy comedian. I quess they are deciding who was going to be the first on the stage to go after that strange fan coming at them in that too large of a barn coat and knee high boots.
Love the pictures. Oh, I'm glad we don't have snow yet!
I stink at captions. Ugh.
"When poultry watch 'Project Runway.'"
Great images - I laughed just looking at them.
Great pictures! Love the one of Jenna. I think Babydoll is happy to see you. Dusty started nickering to me about a year ago. Now he always talks to me a lot when he sees me.
OK here's mine. I think Sid was the instigator "So whatya say fella gangsta's should we blow this popsicle stand" I know I'm not very creative, never hurts to try though.
At first I thought your chickens were wusses, but then I remembered our little "tunnel" from house to coop would get buried under snow, so ours would spend most of the winter inside, too. Chicken feet don't make great snowshoes, huh?
I think Sid was bragging about his, erm, potency, fathering three chicks. Phyllis was telling him he's full of himself, and Mr. Cotton was just stunned that Sid could be so thoughtless about Mrs. Cotton's seeming infidelity.
"All My Chickens" Tune in next week to see who's sharing a nest...and who's plotting revenge!
It looks colder in New Mexico than North Dakota.
I like your chickens!
Oh wow! Look at that snow! Looks cool to me, ha, ha! But then, we hardly ever see any!
" Yeah, so then Rod Stewart comes up to me and says 'Nice hair'!"
I love your little doggie in his blue coat too!
Your snow facts a extremely interesting!! I can't believe how late you have gotten snow and early for that matter LOL!! I think I would go crazy, I HATE the snow and we surely see enough of it here in KS!!
That picture cracks me up!! I'm going to have to see if I can come up with anything clever!
Brrrr....girl, snow already!! It's still in the 70's here. Last night it did get a bit chilly, but by noon it's nice and warm again!!
And you know how much I love Sid, he is the most handsome rooster EVER!
Their conference? Hmmmmm......Sid says to the others, "We three are entirely too handsome to venture out into that cold white stuff!"
I am so not good with this!! LOL, I do love Mr. Cotton and Phyllis Diller!! But Sid, oh Sid, he is my favorite!!
I live in Atlanta too...and the snow pics..well..we dont get that here. LOL. Poor chilled chickens!
My vote goes to vaquerogirl....good one.
Hey Lisa! You have another award! Check it out at Rural Ramblings.
Cheers!
Great post and shots..:-)
So, phyllis says to sid, why did the human cross the road?? To get to the other side..Cluck,cluck..:-)
It looks like they are going to let out a christmas carol, Sids saying "Ok girls 1,2,3....Joy to the world..."
It is hard to believe I am sitting in 45degree heat and you are stomping through snow, maybe if I sit here long enough some of that snow might blow into my face, or not :)
