Just What I Needed

Tuesday was just another day of this:

IMG_8965

Believe it or not, the morning started off sunny and warm. And we had put Zuni up in her turn-out beside the barn, but by late morning, I sent Jax up to bring her back down to the house because the snow was coming down fast and thick.

IMG_8967

I was under the false impression that it had to be too warm for any snow to stick on the ground. Of course, I was wrong and we ended up with between 2-3” of the white stuff. Zuni didn’t mind. Snow just makes her more playful.

~~~~~~~~~~~
So, the next day, while the snow was melting into a thick, gooey, slippery mess here at home, I was driving west through Albuquerque and north into Rio Rancho (about a 45 minute drive from home) for an appointment and to visit a friend. After the appointment and visit were through, I decided to do something I haven’t done by myself for years.
I took a nature walk.
And I hiked on well-groomed paths through the beautiful Bosque along the Rio Grande River.
IMG_9051
I wonder what they mean by “Pets At Large”? Would this exclude horses, which are large? I think I will check to see if horses are permitted on these beautiful trails. I would love to ride Apache here
IMG_9048
In the summer, these cottonwood trees create a thick, green canopy above the trails. A wonderful escape from the heat of the city. Most of Albuquerque and the Bosque is at or below 5,000 ft elevation. Up in the mountains where we live, we’re above 7,000ft, so our summers are always cool and comfortable. We rarely ever need to turn on the A/C, because leaving the windows open allows our cool breezes to keep things comfortable. I suppose these long, snowy winters are the price we pay to have such beautiful weather during the summer.
And I guess when things get too bad up here during the winter and spring, we can always drive west, down into the city and warm our cold bones.
The term Bosque refers to low-lying forests around rivers densely forested with cottonwoods and other deciduous trees in the southwestern United States.
(See those mountains in the distance? Just beyond those peaks, is where you’ll find The Laughing Orca Ranch)
IMG_8986
The Bosque is such a peaceful, quiet respite and it refreshed my body, mind and spirit strolling below those huge Cottonwood Trees, feeling the warmth of the sun on my skin.
IMG_8987
Exploring the twisting, narrow trails towards the river.
IMG_8993
I rarely ever go on hikes by myself anymore because I enjoy taking my kidlets along so they get to experience all the beauty of nature, too. So, I did feel slightly guilty about leaving them at home. But I must admit the peace, quiet and serenity of the trail all to myself was pure joy for my spirit.
Oh, I but did have my Dobbie girl. She goes everywhere with me, and it was nice to have her company. I think she was feeling the same way I was, just enjoying herself with all the new sights, scents and noises of the Bosque and Rio Grande River.
I doubt she has ever been this close to a river before.
IMG_8999
As a breeding female in a Puppy Mill, kept in a cage 24/7 taking care of puppies for the first two years of her life, it must be amazing to her to experience so many new things. It makes me smile just watching her take it all in.
IMG_9009
It’s amazing to me that I adopted my Dobbie girl only 7 months ago. It feels like she’s been with me and my family for much longer. She’s one very special pooch and I love to explore new places with her.
When I was just a little girl, I had a medium-sized, black, fluffy mutt dog, named Francie, that I adored. She was my best friend and we were often out exploring the woods and creek behind our suburban house or hiking out together just the two of us, when my parents took us camping. I love hanging out with my kids and taking them everywhere with me, but there is still something so special about taking a walk with your dog.
IMG_9001
Or just sitting together beside the mighty Rio Grande River.
IMG_9032
It was such a warm day, I took off my shoes and dug my shy, hobbit feet into the sand.
IMG_9022
And then I became braver and dipped my toes into the chocolate colored water of the Rio Grande.
IMG_9020
Laying back in the warm, soft sand, barefoot, was just wonderful!
IMG_9026
I can’t even explain the relief and joy it was to just be able to walk on dry, flat, level ground again without having to negotiate through ice, mud, snow, and pocks of hoof prints and tire ruts.
IMG_9005
Of course, I was wearing my Professional Choice Miracle Knee Brace and my knee was causing me no problems at all. No weakness, no limping, and no pain. Pure bliss…I tell ya.
It was time to head back to the car. Where’s the trail?
IMG_9034
I followed our footprints and we found it.
IMG_9035
Exploring the Salt Cedar Maze.
IMG_9039
Hey Mom. We’re almost to the end of the Salt Cedar Maze. Come on. Follow me.
IMG_9042
Finally out of the maze. Should we go this way?
IMG_9044
Or that way?
IMG_9046
So many forks in the trail. So many new trails to explore when we come back again one day.
IMG_9047
This was just what I needed to get me through more wintery blasts, as Spring builds up it’s soft muscles enough to toss winter off of it’s back, once and for all.
You gave me a good reminder Lisa, that it IS OK to go alone now and again, sans kids, to get some quiet time.
I needed that. Your timing is wonderful!
Glad that your Dobie girl is having such a grand life now!!!
I thought about you this morning,
Imus is joined at his ranch by the great retired MLB pitcher Curt Shilling and his wife Shonda. Here, they tell The I-Man all about their new book, "The Best Kind of Different: Our Family's Journey with Asperger's Syndrome."
Pets at large - You have to have your pets under control?
Such a beautiful place. I have to say my fav pic is the one of your shadows...simply wonderful.
Yes Joanna. I knew what the sign really means. I was just being silly when I posted.
Actually I think it's interesting that they allow pets to be off leash in a preserve. Most parks post rules about Pets must be on a leash at all times.
The kids and I have actually been there once when a loose large dog came around the bend and started snarling at us. When his owners showed up we reminded them that their dog was out of their sight and therefore not under their control. They didn't seem to care at all, nor apologize for thier dogs agressive behavior.
I think I would worry about the lack of a leash law if were were able to ride horses in that park actually.
Your DobieDog is very beautiful. A friend of mine has a Peke who was also a puppy mill dog, for the first four years of her life. I can't imagine any dog being kept in a cage all the time for four long years, producing litter after litter. She is a very special dog, also. I think that they are extra grateful that their life now is so much better.
Nice that the knee is feeling well enough to take you on a walk!
I'm so glad that you were able to get out for some private time and your knee gave you no trouble. Before you know it, you'll be back in the saddle.
I like the shadow picture as well. But I really like the series of toesies photos! And the salt cedar maze lloks like fun.
I was worried that your "just what I needed" referred to more problems with your knee. Glad to hear it was just the last snowy hurrah of winter (we hope). Or was it the walk by the river that you needed? At any rate, good to hear your knee is doing so much better.
It is a great feeling to get out of the snowy rut. The first day I could sit outside in the sun was pure heaven. That looks like a great place to collect one's thoughts.
Now that walk looks relaxing!!! There is no where safe to walk alone where I live, but when I can I hike with my Collie, Chase.
Pet's at large I believe means they must be leashed / contained.
I'm glad you got away from the icky blicky snow!
Your Dobbie girl looks so much like my Zoe. Zoe is 3/4 dachie and 1/4 jrt. She is black and tan instead of red but her left ear is just like your Dobbie's! She is a beautiful dog :) and it is okay to spend some special time with your four legged kids too. :)
Looks lovely. Thats so wonderful you gave dobbie such a good home. We don't have very many public trails around here. The nearest public trail for riding is 2 and 1/2 hours.
Ahhh, Lisa, how relaxing for you!!! Having your toes in the sand then the river, bet that felt great. Looked like you and Dobbie girl had a grand time.
I can't believe you got more snow at home! Will it ever end? We had cooler weather here but now snow even though they were calling for a little.
Hoping that warm air blows in your way so it melts the snow, tries the mud and you can ride your horsey!!! :-D
Looking at your beautiful, peaceful photos made me feel like I got the benefits of it, too.
So glad to hear your knee is feeling better. You and Apache are set for spring! Ride on, cowgirl!
Ack, I feel your pain regarding the snow. I didn't think winter was ever going to end here, but thankfully it seems to have subsided for now. I'm sure Spring will come none too quickly for you and Apache.
Beautiful photos of your nature walk! Quite enjoyed today's post.
You deserved such a wonderful day, and I agree there is something special about going for a nature walk with your dog; the only thing better is going on a ride and having your doge alongside you.
What beautiful country! And just a little ways from all the snow? thanks for the tour
What a beautiful spot! And, wasn't it nice to get away from all your snow, even if just for a little while? Our mountains have had so much snow this winter that even the locals are complaining! I should take my little black lab on walks with me. She isn't that big!
