Horse Camping ~ Trail Ride ~ Mud Puppies

We left that first pond and rode through the meadows and forest, enjoying the sounds and sights of nature. I don’t think there is anyplace else I’d rather be, than on a horse’s back traveling among the beauty of Mother Earth.

I’ve been feeling rather melancholy since I returned home after last weekend’s horse camping trip. I’ve come to realize that the weekend was just too short. A week would have been better….no…..a month. No. A lifetime! Can you imagine living a life where you could just saddle up and ride right out of your own property onto thousands of miles of gorgeous trails?

I was telling a friend about my horse camping weekend, and she’s the type that gets regular manicures, loves to go shopping, and always wears the “In” styles of clothing. After gushing about what a terrific weekend I had, the first thing she said was, “I bet you were so glad to get back home and sleep in your own bed and get a shower in your own bathroom.”

I think my jaw dropped. She totally didn’t get it. I could have stayed there forever. My cot was comfy, I had a shower available in Deb’s lodge, and I even had a great outhouse, too. (My friend shuddered at the word ‘outhouse’. lol!) But best of all, I had access to wonderful horses, and gorgeous trails to ride at any time. Could life get any sweeter?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Anyway, we rode through several beautiful and magical aspen glades, my favorite places to be during our trail rides.
Rosie and I are well suited together. She dislikes horses following her on the trails. She will pin her ears and kick any horses that get too close. I also tend to not like having anyone riding behind me. Not only do I feel crowded, but if something were to happen, I’d be hemmed in with no escape. In fact during this ride, Bella spooked at one of the dogs rushing out from the bushes beside us. Bella jumped backwards and sideways, but I was able to quickly direct Rosie backwards and out of the way. If there had been someone behind me following closely, it could have been a train wreck.
But the main reason I like traveling in the rear, if I’m riding in a group, is that I prefer the semi-solitude that position provides.
Some of my best rides on Baby Doll were when we rode alone. It seemed like we were more in tune with each other and she paid more attention to me since we were less distracted.
It’s ironic that my fall and subsequent injury caused when Baby Doll teleported, happened when I was riding with my neighbor, and not when I rode alone, yet, I’m afraid to ride alone now. Even when I ride Apache at home, I always have one of my twinlings stay with me. I hope someday I will feel brave enough to ride alone again.
(Deb showed us this huge nest high up in an Aspen tree. She told us that she had seen Golden Eagles raise their babies in this nest. How awesome is that?!)
IMG_1942
Does anyone else like to ride alone, too? Do you sometimes feel afraid to ride alone? Where do you ride alone where you feel the safest?
~~~~~~~~~~~~

There I went off on a tangent again. See? I told you I was feeling rather melancholy lately. My mind is always wandering…..thinking.

So, we finally reached another pond. This pond was much smaller and seemed shallower, so a few of the riders in our group decided to encourage their horses to wade in and splash around.

Looks like Jasper’s preparing to do a split. lol!

IMG_1930

I briefly considered wading in, too, even though Rosie didn’t seem too keen on getting muddy.

Jasper made sure to share some mud with Callie, too.

IMG_1932

I had just turned around and put my camera away when just behind me I heard screaming, yelling and cussing!

When I turned back around I realized that the screaming was coming from the riders around the edge of the pond. And the yelling and cussing were coming from Colleen!

Apparently, once Colleen and her gelding Jake were in the middle of the pond, good ‘ol Jake thought it would be a grand idea to just plop down in the water and mud and enjoy a nice roll.

Colleen definitely did not agree!

IMG_1929

She managed to get him standing up, while not getting rolled on and drowned in that pond, but boy howdy! Was she stinkin’ mad at that naughty boy.

I think he was feeling pretty upset with himself, too.

Jake: “Uh Oh! I just wanted a nice muddy roll. I forgot I had a monkey on my back. I’m in big trouble now.”

Or maybe Jake just said, “Ooops. Did I do that?”

IMG_1931

Poor Colleen was soaked with water and covered in mud, from her thighs down to her toes.

IMG_1935

She had to take off her boots to pour out the water and mud.

IMG_1936

What a tough cowgirl she is, though. She rode the rest of the day, without complaint, coated in stiff dry mud…..and who knows what else got sponged out of that pond, and into her jeans and boots. gah!

And we had to keep riding down the trail as we had a mission to complete: to visit with The Mother.

To Be Continued………………..

I am glad your friend is okay. I hate it when a horse lays down with a rider on them...scarey

Looks like more fun everytime I read more of your camping trip. I dont ride alone by myself very often just becuase quite often I am riding a young horse(unless I am in the arena I like riding alone to get more accomplished) and I like to visit, to me riding is more fun when you can share it with someone else.

Seems like such a great weekend! I think I've told you once or twice I'm jealous, but I really, really am.

My parents are lucky that they can just saddle up and hit Rocky Mountain National Park or Roosevelt Forest any time they want. I have to drive about an hour to join them, but it's still pretty wonderful to just hop on Estes and cross the highway to go to some amazing trails.

As for riding alone, I love it. Riding with my parents or the new barn boss is a lot of fun, too, but riding by myself is so peaceful. I just love it.

Really, Lisa, you should come up in August and join us for High Country Rendezvous - you're what? eight hours from us? We'd have a great time.

Great tale. I also found that after a couple of amazing trips horse camping I was SAD for a week, missing the trail. Must be in our blood.

LOL Ok I can relate when it comes to horses rolling. One time some friends and I rode from our farm to the beach as we usually do. Anyway this one girl went out deep on her horse then came back in and was cantering up and down the hills. When she stopped to let her horse air up she horse promptly dropped and rolled. I hear several riders screaming and see my friend dive off her horse to avoid getting her leg squished. Luckily they got her up before she rolled on her saddle.

Yeah, Poco gets that in his head sometimes. It doesn't scare me, just makes me mad.

You will regain your confidence. I'm sure your girl Apache will help you with that. Is she feeling okay?

Yup, I used to ride a horse whose way of getting rid of a rider was to drop and roll. Luckily, you could anticipate when he was going to do it and, if you got him going forward you could avoid it. I was younger and braver then.

I can't wait to hear about the Mother.

Your pictures are gorgeous, Lisa! I wish that I were out there riding with you. : )

I understand what you mean about that ambivalent and/or melancholy feeling that you get when it is time to go home. Escape is nice sometimes, right?

Also...in regards to your comment on Chelsi's blog...you are not boring!!!! I have been gone for three days at a baseball tournament, and your blog was one of the first ones I went to. : )

I can see why you would want to stay.

I'm sorry you couldn't ride Apache, but very happy you still had a great mount and fun!

As for riding alone - I do ride alone but never trail riding. I will ride around the farm, around fields, in arena's etc, but never out on a trail.

And rolling... ahhahaha when I was a teenager I was showing my Arabian in Western Pleasure or Showmanship don't remember which but that crazy mare just decided she'd had enough dropped and rolled when "Canter" was called... I managed to get my leg out of her way and get off without getting hurt.

I've actually seen horses roll in the water with people on them. The rider comes off. On hot days it's not that bad. The tack though, gets nasty.

As Melanie says, you're not in the slightest bit boring!

I had a mare when I was a teenager that would always lie down and dry to roll if I took her in water - it was just one of her quirks.

Sounds like you had a great week end!

I frequently ride alone, both on the trail and at the barn (our barn is very small). I used to worry about it but I don't really any more. If things look like they're going south to the point that I might come off, I get off and do ground work instead, or if I'm on the trail, I get off and lead the horse. I actually like riding alone most of the time - I can really concentrate on what the horse and I are doing together rather than being distracted by others. But company's fun too sometimes.

It's odd how horses feel free to roll in water with a rider on their backs, but won't roll in sand with a rider. It sounds like you are feeling how I feel every Sunday night when I realize my weekend is over and I have to go back to work. As you know from my rants on our HAAH blog, I really resent anything that gets in the way of my horse time, including work. But, of course, without work, I couldn't feed and care for my horses. I just wish I could work two days a week and ride for five! Hee hee.

I hear ya, riding anytime you want, sleeping in a comfy bed, outhouse is just too cool, maybe a bit drafty too! LOL I would be feeling a let down too if I had just come back from all that fun, you are so lucky to get to do that. Go on as many horse camping trips as you can, I don't know that I would have it in me to do that, it does sound like soooo much fun!!!

Riding alone is what I do all the time, I enjoy it. I usually have Lucy and Gonzo along for company. Most of my riding life I have ridden alone, I do enjoy riding with others but there isn't anyone here now to ride with. Since Gilly doesn't want to ride in the trailer guess I won't be going on any trail rides away from here.

Love your pictures. Poor Colleen what a muddy mess. Thank goodness Gilly has only tried rolling one time and got corrected for it and hasn't tried it again!

Hope Apache is healing up OK, so you two can go out riding again! :-)

hugs....
Jane
