It’s been Hot and the Flies have Arrived

This past week the temps up here at 7,000ft have been in the upper 80’s and low 90’s. Thankfully that’s without any humidity, but without an A/C, we just keep all the blinds drawn, and the windows open for the breezes to blow through and to keep the blazing sun out.

It’s not too bad in the house, but the horses only have a few trees to stand under to get some shade, or they have the barn to go into to get out of the sun. But inside the barn is where the biting flies hang out during the day.

So the horses choose to stand under the trees for shade or just stand out in the sun and sweat it out, swishing their tails every so often to chase the flies away.

It sure is dry here, too. We could use some good rain. We’ve had a few sprinkles since last summer, but nothing to really soak the earth and help things grow. The grass has given up and anything still standing is dry, crunchy and parched. Dust clouds fly up with every step the horses take.

Bella: “What was that noise?”

Apache: “I don’t know. Where’d it come from?”

We are waiting desperately for our summer monsoons, which usually arrive in late July and stick around through August. When the monsoons arrive we can expect deeply soaking rain every afternoon for a half hour to an hour at least. Last year was not so good for the monsoons and we were only given a few deeply ground drenching rains.

Bella: “I don’t know what it was. I’m too hot to care. Let’s go up to the barn and check for some hay crumbs.”

Apache: “No. The biting black monsters are in the barn. Let’s stand here!”

I hope the refreshing, cleansing rains will come this summer. Everything will cool off and the earth will smell clean with the scents of sage, juniper, and pinon. I won’t be able to take deep enough breathes after a New Mexico Summertime Rain.

Bella: “Uh, ok, standing here underneath the blasting midday sun sounds good, too………do you have anything to eat?”

Oooh too hot to look at! At least you don't have the humidity. That is what really sucks. We have had such a hot and humid summer, I have to get out the barn by 8 to do any riding or driving. Hope you get your rains soon.

We're hot and humid here. The flies are fewer in our barn - they don't seem to like the shade, for some reason. Would fly predators work in your barn to reduce the flies, or is there something else there that is attracting them?

I wish we had HOT like you do! I was just outside with the little dogs, it's 9:30pm here and still the temp is 80 and feels like a sauna out there! I will take dry hot anytime. We also have the BIG black razor-jawed-bite-through-your-jeans horse flies!! I fear I won't be riding for some time with those blood biting critters out and about.
Wow, Apache is LOOKIN' GREAT!!! She has filled out and muscled up, gorgeous!!!
Bella? Who's Bella, have I missed something?
hugs....
Jane

Yea the flies here are horrible also. We have gotten some rains, but mostly a lot of thunder and lightning that's been putting a damper on my riding. But I did manage to get in some riding today.

Are you planning on going to the ACTHA ride in Santa Fe in August?

Um...I think I missed something. You didn't buy Bella, did you? How long is she going to be keeping Apache company?

They are both beautiful, by the way.

I'm still amazed at how late in the summer things heat up for you. We've already had at least three heat waves here, into the high 90s! But at least we've gotten rain this year. Do the horses find anything to graze on out there amongst the crispiness?

Its been pretty warm here, problem is we have had a long wet spring and the mosquitoe and biting flies are out in force!! My poor horses have welts. I heard a funny, well maybe not so funny, LOL story at the feed store the other day, one of the vets had been in and people are calling her thinking thier horses are breaking out in hives! and its mosquitoe bites!! The little blood suckers have been awful!!!

Well, I wish you gentle, soaking rains when they come. We are into monsoon season here in the south and just had a truly frightening storm a couple of days ago. The parade of work crews has begun to clean up and repair all the damage around our place. I'll have pictures on the blog in the coming days.

Lovely pictures of your horses, Lisa.

Flies are bad, but not THAT bad here. They get bad around the end of August.

Lisa, we just had our first monsoon storm here in southern California and it sparked 3 brush fires! ACK! I did get some pics of the thunderheads up at the ranch and they got a heavy downpour later that afternoon, so I'm sure you'll be getting some moisture! Take care! It was 114 here yesterday!

I pay for strong breezes to keep them off us!
