I’m Going to Miss Him

I’m in a funk, feeling rather sad and melancholy. I’ve been so crazy busy lately, you’d think that would keep my mind in a happier place, but I’m still feeling as if I’m walking in pudding. Trying to adjust to lots of different things going on around me, one of those things being the changing of the seasons.

I’m NOT happy about that AT. ALL.

I love summer here in our mountains. It’s my favorite time of year up here. Spring and Fall are fleeting and barely last a couple weeks. And this year is so weird because it started off with severe drought and wildfires, with no grass in sight. Just dry, dusty brown. It was downright depressing.

Then the Monsoons arrived and we received rain almost every day. Everything greened up and we had grass growing. It was wonderful!

But our July-August Monsoon Season still hasn’t ended. This is not normal for New Mexico. I’m grateful for the rain, don’t get me wrong, but it’s just too suspicious. Makes me wonder and worry about what winter will be bringing us this year.

(Our backyard and our barn up the hill, as seen from my bedroom window)

IMG_4180

Just today, a huge horde of yellow jackets caused me to believe that a noisy dust devil was flying over our house, but when I looked outside, I was horrified to see that instead of a dust devil, there were at least 200 yellow jackets, lifting, spinning, and flying out over our home. I have no idea where they came from. We don’t have a nest on our property that I have seen. So, in my head I was asking “What does this mean?!”, like the Double Rainbow dude from You Tube. Is this a sign that winter is going to be more challenging than what we’re used to?

IMG_4182

The temperatures have been dropping every day and aren’t rising above 70F, and it has become very cold at night, dropping down into the 40’s. I went from turning off my ceiling fans a week ago, to closing my windows at night, this week, because it’s just too cold. A friend and neighbor, about 5 miles south, and 600ft higher in elevation, said she woke up at 5am on Friday morning and was greeted by snow flurries! I’ll need to start digging out more blankets and my down quilts at the rate we’re going around here.

But, we still have hummingbirds visiting my feeder.

IMG_3725

I probably should stop refilling the feeder, but instead I’ve just been making their sugar nectar more like sweet, sticky syrup instead, trying to give them as much of an energy boost as I can before they leave on their journey southward.

IMG_4106

I’m really going to miss them. Especially this flamboyant fellow.

IMG_4105

When he first arrived, he was a holy terror and made sure everyone knew that he was boss when it came to who was allowed to share the nectar feeder.

IMG_4142

He was tenacious and was constantly a blurr as he chased everyone around that got too close to “his” feeder without his permission. I just love his fierce, determined look, don’t you?

IMG_4141

This is the first year that I’ve had more than one or two hummers visiting my feeder. This summer we’ve had 6 or more hummingbirds zooming and buzzing around our backyard, flying up to my bedroom window to stare at me, and jetting past my head when I’m working in my garden, just to see if they can startle me. They are very enchanting and bring me so much joy.

IMG_4144

Some of the drab, brown birds that will stick around into winter have been hanging out around my bird feeders and the suet feeders, waiting for that routine to start up again. Seems rather early to me. Perhaps they know something I don’t?

IMG_4150

My ears are going to miss the hummer’s unique sounds and winter will just seem dreary without their brilliant colors flashing me as they hover around the feeders.

This little cheeky guy has been my favorite and I’m going to miss him.

                       Please bring summer back? Please?

Yeah, I'm certainly not ready for winter. I've heard that it's going to be another cold, dry winter, like last year. I still need wood!

It seems like most mornings I'm dumping a 1/2 inch of water out of the ground horse feeders from the overnight rains.

Great photos of the hummers! I can't seem to remember to fill my feeder this year and when I do they drink it dry in a day or two. Enjoy them while they're here! My swallow friends are dwindling to about two or three nests now.

I agree - fall came way too soon. Not early fall weather either - we are more like late fall weather here in cincinnati. Sucks!

I feel your superstitions, We had about about 2 weeks of summer and now it's raining...again. I'm not ready for winter. Wonderful hummingbird photos. I think I am going to try to plant some humming bird attracting flowers next year, I love those guys!

Sorry you have the blues, but I guess weather depends on your perspective. I am so happy to have a little cooler weather this week. We had so many 100 degree days that I didn't ride as much as usual during the summer. Our camping and riding weather is just cranking up! :-)

I don't think I've ever had a hummingbird stop flying for a photo shoot. They are so interesting to look at when they aren't a blur.

Nice pictures of your hummers. Yeah, that Rufus hummingbird is very aggressive. I took down my feeders over a month ago because of bear activity in the neighborhood. But I still see some stragglers who haven't gone south yet. The weather is pleasantly cooler and that Fall feeling is in the air that I like so much, although I certainly understand your apprehension about the uncertainty of Winter this year.

it's been strange weather in a lot of places this year.
What great shots of the hummingbird! next year I will remember to get my feeder up early. Must look after the darling little birds :-)

I know how you feel. I love summer and when the middle of september rolls around, it feels like life comes to a screetching halt. I get so sad.

I agree with you. Shall we start a petition?
Although I am enjoying the cool mornings, I am not thrilled that each day is noticeably shorter. I like the long days... not the long nights!
Let's just say "No" to old man winter and let him know he is not welcome here. Go some other place!

I find that the hummers are the ones that I miss the most too, when summer is over and they leave.

What beautiful hummers! We get a few around here and I still have the feeder out but haven't seen any in many days now. Last year we had about eight at the at the feeder near the end of their season. This year I only saw 3. I think it was too hot and maybe their eggs didn't hatch. They are a joy to have around. I'll miss them too.

I agree, our summer didn't start until mid August and now it's almost fall! Mother Nature wasn't kind to us this year, nor to alot of people. I don't want summer to end!! I have too much to do!

Love the hummingbird pics!! I have a feeling we are in for another rough winter. The weather has been so erratic across the entire country.

Sorry you've got the blues. I experienced a bout of those just last week. It really has been an unusual year for weather all over our country. Our summer was very slow to start, and then cooler than usual, followed by very hot temps, then a week of rain and now it's pleasant 70's and expected 80's this week. There is a chill in the air mornings and at night though...fall starts this Friday, ready or not! I can feel sad at times about summers' end too, but I love fall (usually), if the rains don't start early on. I try to appreciate each season and the unique qualities of each, and try to be thankful that we don't have horrible extremes like so many people have been dealing with. That helps me. We don't have floods, no fires in our immediate area and no horrendous storms. Life's never perfect, for anyone. All we can do is get prepared for a long, cold winter and hope for the best...one day at a time. Like the Boy Scouts say, "Be prepared". :D Your hummingbird pictures are absolutely gorgeous!! They are so adorable, I've never gotten such good shots of them. And, those bees!! Now that would terrify me! I'd be worried that they might attack my horses or something. Never saw anything like that before, and hope not to. Glad they passed without doing harm. Take care Lisa, Lorie

Look at that gorgeous Rufous Hummingbird - fantastic pictures Lisa. I know exactly how you are feeling, I am filled with dread as I watch the seasons changing here. Summer seemed so very brief this year and winter just seems to stretch out for ever. Hang in there! You have got all your beautiful animals to help you through :)

What a sweet little hummer! My nana was a lover of hummingbirds and would have five or six feeders across her porch each summer. She would sit and talk to them and chuckle at their antics! I remember spending many an hour watching them feed and dash around chattering like crazy. When we moved here, our first house had lots of trees around it and the hummers would nest up in them. I put out feeders the first summer and sometimes there would be 10 to 15 birds at one feeder! Their numbers dropped over the years and since moving across the valley and having no large trees, I haven't had any hummers around for almost two years now! I miss them! I see them once in awile, but they don't stay.

The end of summer always makes me feel sad, blue and out of sorts! I do enjoy fall, but in no way am I ready for cold weather yet!!

Summer will come again and, with it, will come all of the joyous sights that you love so much. Just hold tight to the memories, and keep telling yourself, each day, that you're one day closer to that glorious season.
