Goodbye Fall! Hello Winter!

Not many people believe me when I tell them how short-lived our Autumn is here in the central mountains of New Mexico, above 7,000 ft elevation. When I posted on September 18 with my I'm Going To Miss Him post, I’m pretty sure some folks probably thought I was just being silly for whining about how much I was going to miss summer, the beautiful warm days, the cool breezes, wonderful hiking and camping, watching my garden grow, and enjoying my lovely hummingbirds.

September 18th seems so far away already, yet it was only just 2 weeks ago!

             Yes, that’s right…2 weeks ago!

And last night was our first hard freeze and our first snowfall.

IMG_6013

Yesterday Jen and I harvested the rest of our zucchini,

IMG_5995

Pulled up the last few bunches of baby carrots, (my kidlets and I ate them all up just 10 after this photo was taken. Mmm! So sweet and crisp!)

IMG_5989

And picked the rest of the pickling cucumbers off their vines in preparation for this winter storm.(Hello! Bread and Butter pickles and Dill pickles, too!)

IMG_5993

Good thing we did. I don’t think they would have survived the 28F temps and snow we had last night and this morning. Brrrr! (But sad. Because there are still some baby zucchini and zucchini flowers still on the vines)

IMG_6032

My poor old hens have seen this time of year come and go for 4 years now. They are smart enough to stay inside their cozy warm hen house at least until the sun rises and warms everything up. (They have a reflective brooder lamp inside with a 100 watt light bulb, that I keep in there year round)

IMG_6082

Most of the Summer chicks, who are now 16 weeks old, haven’t learned that winter weather tip yet. They were outside in the coop before the dawn had a chance to truly crack open it’s warm light.

IMG_6069

Many of them were fluffed up, looking rather uncomfortably cold at 7am this morning.

IMG_6064

I tossed them some scratch, poured some warm water in their waterers, and refilled their feeders, and that seemed to warm them up a bit.

IMG_6071

Then I stuck around to enjoy their comforting clucking sounds as they pecked at the corn and seeds on the ground.

IMG_6049

They can be counted on for gathering around me to receive some attention and petting and I always enjoy stroking their soft, silky feathers.

(Hey! Who gave me horns?!)

IMG_6044

But then it was time to head up to the barn to feed the rest of the critters. Apache seemed to be trying to soak in all the warmth of the sun shining into her stall. She’s already been growing a thick, fuzzy fur coat to keep her warm, too.

IMG_6014

Wait! Who is that??!

IMG_6019

Looks like Val’s dog Sandy, of the Fantastyk Voyage Blog decided to climb under the fence into our pasture to visit Apache and the llamas and goats.

Howdy Sandy!

IMG_6021

I was a little worried about Sandy trying to sneak into the llama’s paddock because llamas can be very defensive and aggressive towards strange dogs trespassing into their space, especially Catlinite, who takes his guardian job seriously.  Llamas, just like donkeys have been known to kill coyotes and dogs.

But as I watched the scene at the barn, Catlinite lunged at Sandy before she managed to scoot underneath the gate, and he chased her away. Whew!

IMG_6023

After the animals were fed, I took a few more photo examples of “The Loss of Summer”…….

IMG_6098

or “Farewell Autumn”………..

IMG_6038

and “Hello Winter”.

IMG_6033

And I was supposed to participate in another ACTHA Competitive Trail Ride out in Grants, NM today, but my ride never called. But it's ok. It must not have been meant to be.

IMG_6081

And besides a barrel racing friend of mine invited me to come watch and support her competing at the Rockin Horse Ranch, in the town of Moriarty, just 15 minutes east of us. I’m very excited because I haven’t been over there since last April’s Paint Horse Show. And the barrel races will be in an indoor arena, too. Very nice.

Anyway……..

Looks like it’s time to pack up my summer clothes and pull out my winter woolies!

You caught some pretty shots of the snow...and fluffy chickens!
We are still getting snow now - it's been snowing for almost 8 hours - but since it's only 33 it is melting a bit.
I also picked our last squash last night and it was sad to see a few blossoms - oh well, next year!

Better your side of the mountain than ours. It was only 41 degrees here and we could see he snow on the mountain, but that was cold enough.

Great pictures.

Lisa, I drove up to the ranch where I board my horses this morning and it was COLD. I didn't even have a sweater or jacket in my car...ACK! Brrrrrr! They've already had a frost...no snow, however, but LOTS of rain and even some hail! Yes, we need to get out our winter woolies!

Your photos are amazing...always!

Don't want snow nor cold yet. The horses are not starting their winter woolies yet so hope winter will take her time getting here.

It must be very satisfying to have pulled the last of the harvest in right on time. Did you not save a single little carrot for Apache? They look so scrumptious!

Oh MY! Snow! No matter how beautiful it looks- I will stick to my warm and sunny California! Today the temp was about 80 degrees! The temp will drop soon, but not as soon as it did where you live.
Bundle up!

I was just telling another blogging buddy that the news of the wonderful weather she's having in the NE and our wonderful weather here in the NW makes me a little uneasy...seems like there have been few days when both sides of the country have been enjoying nice weather. I enjoyed the day...but still feel the hairs on the back of my neck go up when I look at your ice pictures here!

Lovely photos! I can't believe you have winter already! We will have drizzly rain for the next couple months, and maybe a dusting of snow sometime between December and February - if at all, then a few more months of drizzly rain. I think I'd prefer a climate that could make up it's mind and just get down to business about winter, like yours does! Stay warm!

Holy moly...snow on October 8th??? We took off for Albuquerque this morning to go the the craft fair. I glanced west and saw what I thought for a second was bright sun shining on the mountains. NOPE, SNOW!

wow wow! so hard to believe, as California finally enters a warm period- Indian Summer! But you seem to have a great "buckle down" attitude towards winter, and you know how to keep all the critters happy and safe- as much as I love summer, it is fun to see the horses and pups look cozy in their blankets and barns!

I've always wanted to try skiing New Mexico- hopefully your blog will give my husband and I that extra incentive to make the trip, esp . if the lifts open before the holidays!

Nice to find your blog! Corinna

The pictures are beautiful but it still stinks that you already had a snow storm and cold temps. I love Autumn, it's my favorite season. So far we have only had some cooler temps here and there, believe it or not it was 93 today and humid. Ugh. No wonder everyone wanted to come in early they're getting their winter coats already and they were so hot.

The chicks look like little puff balls in gorgeous colors. Good thing you got your harvest in quickly before it was lost. The horse show should be fun. I felt sorry for Sandy she was probably just visiting and trying to make new friends.

Gorgeous photos, as usual.

So, now you are welcoming the winter's frsoty arrival! And here I am trying to catch even the faintest glimpse of some kind of autumn in Tucson! But, moving to a higher elevation is certainly something I would love to do! Glad you got the veggies picked before the coldness hit! Beautiful shots of the snow, and boy I love your chickens! Especially the design in the one chicken's feathers...she is BEAUTIFUL! Have a great winter!

Somehow I think of New Mexico as being milder than Minnesota and had even considered retiring there. Maybe not. My garden is still limping along but next week might be the end. As always, love the chicken photos!

Your garden goodies look wonderful!I love those little baby carrots! Your haul of squash is amazing! You had some prolific squash plants!

The week after the fires here the temp dropped, it rained and then snowed high up on the mtns. around us. Since then our temps have been bouncing around. Morning lows are ranging from the high 20's to mid 30's and day time temps are in the low 60's to the high 70's. Feels like Fall, but that winter nip is in the air as well!

Your photos are beautiful!
