My day started off with the dreaded Physical Therapy appointment. But, at least for this first time, I was pleasantly surprised.
The rooms of the building were covered in Southwest Art and horse prints, so I felt right at home, and before I met with my PT, several of the office people chatted with me about their own horses and what a beautiful day it was...sunny and in the 50's, perfect for a winter trailride.
My PT measured my flexion and extension limits, and assessed what I was able to do. I'm still not able to stand straight with my heel flat on the ground, so we will focus on stretching my calf muscles during PT and at home first.
She then massaged my calf muscles and knee, and then set me up for some electrical stimulation therapy to loosen up my tightened muscles and ligaments so I could have more range of motion.
As I sat there getting comfortably zapped for 15 minutes, I was grateful that worse things were not done to me. Of course, this was just the first visit, and I'll be going twice a week, so things will probably get rougher as we go along. But for now I'm happy with my PT. Monica is very nice and gentle and recently went through surgery for a busted Achillis tendon (the tendon above the heel), so she is sympathetic and knows first-hand about post-op pain and rehabilitation. She also rides horses. Monica believes I can get back up on my horse long before August if I'm focused on getting my mobility back through physical therapy and home exercise.
So, today was a very positive experience. Yay!
Thank you to all of you with your concern, support and positive words of encouragement. You are all joyfully lifting me up and making me feel like I actually can heal and become strong and mobile in no time at all.
I am definetly taking heed of your words that my rehab and healing is not a competition and that I should go at my own pace and not overdo it. Monica, my PT backed all of you up on that, so I sure do appreciate it.
((Hugs)) to you all, my bloggy friends!!

Now it's time to say thank you to my special blog friend, Andrea over at the always interesting and adorable Swamp Suburbia. She has the cutest kids and the most precious pups, too. Oh and she has horses. And her man cooks and makes homemade suckers! Gotta love that.
Andrea sent me a care package with suckers for each of my family members. (Andrea, tell me what flavors they are, ok? If you don't then I'll have to open each one up and take a lick, to make sure I pick the yummiest for me, before sharing them with my fam, lol!)
Andrea also sent a beautiful photo frame with one of my most favorite photos of me and my mare, Baby Doll! I cried when I saw it. I truly did. It touched me and made me decide that I wasn't going to wait any longer to get up to the barn to visit my special painted girl. (More on this later....) Thank you Andrea! You're a great friend!

Also arriving in the mail today was a package from my favorite candy company in the entire world. English Toffee Anytime!! Last month I had just barely slipped in to participate in the Free Give-Away over at Andrea's blog, and I was sent a box of scrumptious toffee...and devoured it mostly by myself, in short order. So yummy!

Well, Ron, of English Toffee Anytime found out that I fell off my horse and was goin through surgery and asked his Toffee Elves to send me another package of toffee to give me sustenance and the strength to go on, after my surgery. Hey Ron, and the Toffee Elves.....It's working. Thank you!!!

And guess what else happened?
Jocelyn over at For the Love of a Horse held a little contest a few days ago and invited me to enter. I love her blog not just because she's a paint horse sister, with a gorgeous bling-bling chrome princess named Star, but also because she knows how to keep it real. And she's hilarious, too.
Well, she asked to Star to pick the winner of the contest, and Star picked me! How awesome is THAT?! I've never been chosen by a horse to win anything before. Yay!
Thank you Star and Jocelyn!

Well, I bet you want to know what the "Nuzzled" part of my title post is all about, right? Well, I just couldn't take it any longer. I just had to go to the barn and visit with my critters. The weather was on my side and the mud had dried up, so after my PT appointment, hubby drove me up to see my critters!!!! You all know how excited I was now, don't you?
I remembered to take my camera with me, just so you all could come along with me and visit my special animals, too.
Join me!
As soon as we opened the gate to drive up, Baby Doll was right there. She seemed to know something was up, and when the door was opened, eagerly popped her head in to say Hello. This is when my smile showed up....and it didn't leave until my visit was over.

The llamas, goats and sheep saw the van and heard me calling them and excitedly headed up for the barn.

Catlinite, our gelding male llama, who is usually very reserved around me, seemed perplexed and curious. Remember he, and my other animals haven't seen me for 3 weeks. But I don't think they forgot me. yay!

John went in the tack room to get Baby Doll a few cookies and Jenna was happy to visit with Baby Doll first.

Baby Doll got a bit confused and couldn't figure out how to get closer to me. She tried to reach through the front door window. Silly girl!

And then it was my turn. I called my mare over to side door of the van and I was in horse nirvana. I was so happy, just talking with my girl, petting, scratching, breathing in that earthy horse smell, nuzzling, just being. I'm not usually sappy, but I was crying tears of joy. Here are some photos that John took while I was getting my Baby Doll Fix.

Check out my fancy painted yak! lol! She's so furry, she even grew a beard! hehe

Baby Doll was very interested in my injured leg and kept taking a few moments to sniff and nuzzle my leg. She was very gentle and sweet and seemed to be worried about the changes surrounding my leg. I wonder if she knows or remembers and understands. I wish she could tell me.

Since the ground was dry, I couldn't help myself, and decided to get out and visit the woolies, too. Cataleya, my lovely female llama, was expressing herself with humming, and she nuzzled her head into my hands so I could scratch her cheeks and rub her ears. Her eyes got all droopy and she really seemed glad to see me. I was thrilled to see her, too.

All the goats, Mud Pie, Moon Pie, Pepper, Luna and Latte wanted some loving and I was happy to oblige.

Svetlana, the Karakul sheep came close for some chin scratches, but Blanca the Churro is too cautious around Luna, my Angora goat. Luna isn't very nice to her and head butts her whenever Blanca tries to get near me. I wonder if Luna's jealous?
I could have spent all day up there, but I was fading fast and getting achy, so it was time to say good bye.

Baby Doll, my sweet mare, stayed close and seemed to understand our visit had come to an end. I think she was pouting a little.

"Hey! Let me in, Mom! I wanna come home with you. I promise I'll be good and won't break.......much".

What a fantabulous day! Three weeks is way too long to go without nuzzling a horse, llama or goat.
How about you? What did you fill your time with all day?
Did you nuzzle a critter? Or get zapped?

oh what a beautiful post. i just told my husband the whole story, starting with the accident, then the chickens, then the care packages, and now this! what a wonderful experience to share with you. i wish i knew if your mare understood too.

Bet you slept like a rock after a day like that. How wonderful to see your critters up close and personal (not thru the 10x) after so long.
I had to work and then go grocery shopping after that, so I didn't get home until late. I was very happy when mike told me he had fed the Boyz for me.
I wish I had come across your Healthy As A horse blog sooner. I would enjoy being part of the contributors. Hell, I'm practically an expert, having been dieting for most of my adult life LOL.
So glad you were able to get to see your special animals. Of course, they wouldn't forget you. Glad to head therapy went well, hope the rest of it does too.
How wonderful that you were able to see your critters up close and personal!! I find that all of my problems, aches and pains go away when I spend time with my horses. Sounds like you have the right PT as well. Move at your own pace - there's no such thing as normal, it's what you can do for yourself.
Gina
Good medical news and a family reunion. What a wonderful day.
I am so happy that you were able to finally get to see and spend some time with your animals. :) I am also happy that you PT went to well. I'll keep praying that the PT works and that you get well soon.
happy friday lisa.
good to hear your PT session went well.
and...most of all that you were able to nuzzle with your critters one and all. that must have made your day!
take care and here are a bucket of hugs to you (((((((((())))))))))
until later.

It looks like things are improving out there, and the photos are beautiful. Baby Doll is so sweet. Here's to a quick and complete recovery - and more great PT sessions on the path!
This is better than Christmas!
Look at all those presents! I'll have to stop over and make sure that toffee is edible. ;)
I'm glad you got up there to visit all the animals. When Riddler fell on me, the last thing I wanted to do for a while was go see him.
Yes, definitely, Christmas!
It sounds like your PT is a very positive thing!
I told ya, recovering from a busted ankle, after a few weeks, Mike rolled me in a wheelchair out to the critters and I became so overwhelmed with emotion to see 'em again. I'll never forget it.
My PT had such a nice way about her too, in no time, she felt like a dear friend. Take care Lisa.
How wonderful that you had a great PT visit AND got to see your furries!!
I'll bet it put BD's mind to rest, that you haven't been abducted by aliens. You'll have to make trips to the barn a part of your PT soon. :)
PS.. I can't send you anything fun, because I don't have your address. Any way we can address that without letting the whole world wide web know??
Oh wow! I almost got teary eyed looking at those pictures myself, and imagining how thrilled you must have been to be out there. I am also jealous that you are not having to wear a parka and snow pants. Must be nice! Congrats on the great first PT session - I love those electro-stim machines. I had one used on my back/shoulder and it was great. Helped considerably with my recovery, I am sure. Hooray for you!
If you have to do physical therapy, it's great to have a physical therapist who is a horse person. I had one a couple of years ago. There was so much time to kill during my therapy (for what we now think is chronic tennis elbow) that we talked horses constantly. In fact, she taught me a lot about horse training so the money I spent on the therapy was well worth it. Oh, and she gave me great relief from the pain.
I do believe that Baby Doll understands that her erratic leap was the cause of your disappearance and that thing on your leg. Bombay spent a lot of time sniffing my cast and looking at me with sad eyes after our accident. He hasn't bucked while I've been on his back since then, which doubley convinces me that he knew his bucking was what hurt me. I'm glad you were able to get out in the sun and nuzzle some critters.
Of course they didn't forget you! You're their mommy. I'm so glad you got out there to nuzzle them all. And I'm glad PT wasn't too bad. I hope you make quick progress and can be walking to the barn soon.
What a positive day for you! Sounds like you've struck gold with your therapist, and you got to see your 4-legged kids as well! The cats and dogs I've had over the years have always made me feel better no matter what had me down. And Baby Doll is gorgeous, and looks very concerned about you.
I'm so far behind I didn't know you fell off your horse and had surgery, but I'm SO glad your first PT visit was good. Something you'll have to do regularly for a long time needs to be with nice people in a nice environment.
And I'm extra happy your mailbox has been stuffed with wonderful things, including surprises!
Oh, shnooks...that makes me wanna cry with happiness for ya!
It is so amazing the sense that animals....I really believe they know when somethings up...when someone isn't right...they just wanna nuzzle ya and show they care!
And jsut thinks of it..animals fightin' over who gets to luv ya first..I mean, were you ever so popular in your life!!!
LOL!!!
I tried to post the other day, but blogger kicked me off and well, I wasn't typing ALL that AGAIN...but I did say to go at your own pace and YOU decide when you feel well enough to challenge yourself a bit more...'course, you're a smart woman...youalready knew that, huh?!
And here's shootin' for an August "sadlle up"!
Oh, pfffft !!
Sorry about all the typos...as usual, my "mouth" is goin' faster than my brain!!
I really can spell....I think I made so many because I SHOULD be doin' chores, but I have to check in on my buddys first !!
But you got the jest of my comment right....?
Awww!! I almost started crying for you too! I can only imagine not being able to just get up and go free will anywhere I wanted. Don't worry. Soon this will all be a distant memory and you will be out riding in those beautiful mountains again before you know it.
And it must feel fantastic to get someone else in the medical field to back you up on how you are doing with your rehab. It's those people that make the difference. Not the meanies. And it's really really nice to see you getting into better spirits. Animals make all the difference, don't they?
Awww, I'm so glad you got to go out and see them. Baby Doll missed you!! You'll be back in the saddle in no time :)
Wonderful!
I couldn't imagine better medicine for your soul right now, than an easy and positive PT session followed by wallowing in critter love! See, I *toldja* they would forgive your absence; Glad you got a chance to find out so soon after surgery!
Yay! Things are looking up for you! I'm so glad your PT went well and that you got to visit your critters! From the pictures, it's easy to see that Baby Doll really has missed you!
I love her winter whiskers:)
Oh I am sooooo happy for you!! I am so glad that you got to snuggle with Baby Doll!! I love her beard!! I have a horse that gets like that too!!! I love it!! I love that all your animals came running!! That is too sweet!! I really am smiling sooo big right now!! What a great afternoon!! I love that last picture of Baby Doll!! Her nose up against the window!!
And hooray for a nice PT who understands you and horses!! Great!! That is a definate plus!! And a massage too, nice!! Eventhough it was just for you calf!! Oh, and a side note about nerves, I had a horse fall with me and it landed on my knee. It messed up my nerves and it's still numb sometimes today. That fall was 6 years ago. It would always feel weird to touch it. The tingly feeling finally has gone, unless I bump it. So, nerves just take a while to get better.
And I am so glad you got the package I sent. I loved that picture of you and Baby Doll too!! I tried not to cut her body out of the picture but I was having trouble getting it the right size. I am glad you liked it! And those suckers.....from left to right...Cotton Candy, Root Beer, Banana, Strawberry Daiquiri, and another Cotton Candy. Root Beer is one of my faves!! Cotton Candy is my husband's favorite!!
And you want to hear something weird? Ron, the guy at English Toffee Anytime, is my Dad. I had no idea he knew off your fall, and I had no idea he was going to send you some toffee!! That was too sweet!! And I am so jealous, I love that stuff!!
I am glad you had a wonderful day!! Get better soon!! And sorry for the novel!!
Awww I am glad you got to see your pony! So sound better - don't know if you feel better but you sound better.
Hope your meds are working ok, worried about that the past couple days.
AND YES isn't that electrical STIM unit lovely?? It's one of my favorite things.
Glad your first experience was good - you're right they will challenge you later on. Mine were all sweet and nice too the first month. Their not nasty mean of course - they just don't care now if it hurts, I am still instructed to work - but I am feel good that I am recovered to the point where I can push myself!
I'm so glad to hear of a very positive day for you!!! You're on the downhill side. Yep, keep your pace steady and don't over do it.
All those lil' things that happen to make you smile make me smile too...and bring a tear.
Hugs friend~~
How lucky to have a horse person for a PT! Monica is your hero! I bet she will get you on a horse before August! Go Monica!
Enjoyed the barnyard tour. When I had a broken ankle & was on crutches, the farrier was coming out. I didn't think anything about it - I could hold horses with crutches as well as without. I was surprised that my horses were scared of my crutches! I am in the pen & they are running in circles & snorting. The only time I ever had to have my farrier catch my horses for me!
Good Luck!
A visit with the fur, feathered, hairy, woolie babies is the best thing to lift your spirits...I'm glad PT went well, good luck at the next one, put your all into it so that you can ride the painted pony again soon.
Have a great weekend.
I'm so happy for you! I'll admit it... I cried a few happy tears for you.
Glad to hear your first PT session was positive. I really think that having fellow horse-people in roles like this helps. They understand in a way that non-riders just can't grasp.
My chiro rode for years so she understands much more than my former chiro did.
Keep up the positive thinking. IMO positive thoughts help us heal.
Good riding weather indeed!!!! I just got back from a four hour ride, and it is only 25 degrees out. I managed to saty warm until hour #3, then I wanted to start crying...lol!!!
I am glad that your PT appointment went well. When I had to go (broken right wrist and ankle with plates, screws and pins)I called them the "Physical Terrorists!" They were nice people though...lol!!
I love the picture of you getting your horse fix. You look like you were just the happiest girl in the world! :0
I am soooooo happy for you! Baby Doll is so cute, and all the rest of your critters just adorable! Does wonders to get those nuzzles! The best Therapy around!!!!!
Keep it up! Oh yeah, and your Therapy appointments? They will only get better!
That was beautiful I'm so happy you had a good day and to top it off you got some sweet sugar lovin from you critters especially Baby Doll, how cute is Baby Dolls fuzzy face. I get rushed in the morning with my furry children as they all want some lovin, it is so rewarding :)
Oh Lisa I am so glad you finally got out to see the animals, it really does feel good to see them after so long.
My hubby and daughter brought the dogs to see me when I was in the hosp for two months, I cried when they came just to have them close. Just to say I know what you are feelin (((hugs))))
You are amazing Rapunzle! I loved this blog post and I am so glad to hear you're at least momentarily back on your feet! Keep up the good work and don't get too hooked on all that zapping!
Jen
Sounds like a pretty good day. About time! Hope you have even better times every day.
Good day for you Lisa. This is what it will be for a while - good days and some not so good days. It's part of the process. Also, there will come a time when you think you're all better. It's tempting to slack off the home PT exercises or to do too much. Resist that temptation and stay within the program. Many folks have had a relapse because they rushed things.
Take care,
Dan
Sounds like a visit with the critters is just what the doctor ordered! Good for you! You're making such progress, I'm glad your PT people think you can be out riding again sooner than you expected!
YEY!
I'm happy for you that PT went well! AND that you got to visit your pony! :)
She looks as happy to see you as you to see her. She loves you. <3 :D
I visited Daisy today...in the 7 degree weather (or was it less?)...in any case, it's COLD in NY right now! I wish it was even half of 50 degrees here! lol
Ahhhh, I think I can stop worrying about you now. What a wonderfull post. I am so happy for you.
PT for the body and animals for the soul ... how could you not feel better!!!
Gosh...that made me cry...happy tears....so happy for you....nothing like pet therapy to speed your healing.
Yay for Rapunzel and her adventures out of the castle tower!!
I'm so glad to hear you finally had some quality fur time. A guarantee to help heal you right up.
I nuzzled an airplane today. Second trip in 4 days. It was not very fulfilling.
I am so glad that you had such a happy, positive and productive day. Your animals love you and I really think they do understand what's going on. They can sense things. Thanks for such a beautiful post. You made me smile!
Oh my dear, those are such great answers to prayers!Hand picked, all of them!
I am sniffleing with joy over you getting to nuzzle with the paint mare...sweet..my husband is happy for you too..he has been getting the updates from me..and can't wait to hear about next week. You are doing so well, am very happy for you.
KK
What a great day, I understand about the "fading fast" part! I have recovered from more than my share of surgeries and injuries.
Horses know a lot. Baby Doll knows you are hurt. Janow once found dried blood on the knee of my pants where I had fallen(crutches) and he made baby-mouth and licked all the blood off. They know.
My surgery is Wednesday. At least I have been able to plan for my 'rest.'
I keep thinking about you and your stepmom at Christmas. The last two surgeries I have had, my own mother has come to take care of me. It's the same kind of deal. She seems to compete with me to be a better mom and wife and housekeeper than I am. Taking care of me is so far down on the list she never gets to it. Everybody thinks she is, so nobody else does either. Dad has been here, but he knows not to get in the middle of it. She can get very angry and vengefull to me and Dad, though not to others.
Sadly then, I have not told my parents about this surgery.
Lisa,
so glad you got to go visit your critters yesterday. What an awesome post!!!! And the pictures of course were great. I loved them all. I can tell that really lifted your spirits and made your life a little brighter!!!!!
Hugs,
Deanna
Lisa--Glad to see you out with your horse, soon it will be for a ride! Keep up the work with your PT and it will be soon! Thinking of you! Oh yeah--do your llamas spit? I took my son to see some when he was a baby and we had to run from them b/c they tried to spit at us? HEE HEE!
--Mindy
Lisa-
Just so you know, I was raised by a mother who taught us that life was all about "survival of the fittest," and that those who were not deemed as being "fit" in society, were unworthy and undeserving of care and generosity.
At the same time, she would open our home to unwanted children, and make us work in food banks. Needless to say, it was very contradictory, and very confusing.
I always knew that she was messed up, and that we should be compassionate to everyone, but it was not really encouraged. Thankfully, as an adult, I have grown and matured immensely. I can look past what she taught me, and see how twisted it was. The thoughts still occasionally come to my mind though, and for that I am ashamed.
I am sorry that you and your family went through a rough patch, and I hope that I didn't offend you by writing my #1 flaw down.
Your Scrapped post gave me ideas in regards to writing about clothing and more material stuff. I don't like writing about myself at all...it seems really petty and shallow. Like I am bragging about how wonderful I think I am.
Anywho...I enjoyed reading about your likes/dislikes, and I hope that you enjoyed mine...even the silly, frivolous ones...lol!!!
You are a TRULY wonderful, kind, and open person, and I am trying to get there myself. :)
Now about getting you more involved in fashion....(Teeheehee!!)
PS-I didn't leave this comment on my blog, beacuase my mother, father, and sisters would read it, and it would only cause more harm than good.
Jacksonsgirrl,
Only mean llamas spit! lol! Typically llamas save spitting for each other. They rarely spit at humans, unless the truly feel threatened and aren't able to flee.
I've had my two llamas for over a year and handle them alot. But I've only been spat at twice, and the first time was because I was brushing Cataleya and she'd had enough and I failed to pay attention to her warnings (ears back, low rumbly hums).
The second time was when I was trimming Catlinite's toenails. He doesn't like being tied up and having his feet handled.
Melanie,
Thanks for sharing. No. I wasn't offended at all. I just wanted to share my own personal experience with you, because I was alot like you in my earlier years. I think we have similar backgrounds.
And I didn't feel like you were bragging at all. I enjoyed reading some scraps about you.
We don't have to be exactly alike and love the same things to be friends :)
Fashion....what's that? The "F" word?
lol!
Wow Andrea!! What a small world! The Toffee Anytime guy is your DAD??!!
How cool is that?
Did he teach your hubby how to make those scrumptious suckers, too?
So, do you get toffee for your birthday and all holidays?
How in the world do you make sure your designer jeans still fit girl!? lol!
Thanks again for all my goodies. You rock!
~Lisa
Lisa I am so glad that you were able to have some snuggle and love time with your animals. Nothing like the adoring love of an animal to lift your spirits. I bet your were tired that day.
Awwwww...I actually got tears in my eyes seeing you sitting in the truck getting nuzzled. I can't imagine how badly your animals have been missing you and vice versa. Your smile is worth a million dollars in those pictures.
Hope the healing process & therapy goes well for you and you are up & running again soon.
I forgot about that zappy thing at PT but I do remember those days now that you mention it. An odd feeling as the impulses jump across nerve endings, I remember, but nothing particularly painful.
I'm glad your first visit with the PT was positive and you have a therapist who understands the needs of us horse people to get back in the saddle. It's bad enough to be hurt without having people looking at us like we're nuts.......(as my doctor did to me this week.)
I hope you have more days like this in this journey to help make the time fly so you can be back riding again and playing with your critters whenever you want.
Lisa,
What wonderful surprises you got. Those suckers look yummy and that toffee.....YUMMO!!
Congrats on winning the contest...=)
I was so happy to see you out and about a little with your Baby Doll and critters. You sounded so happy in your post and I know your critters were happy to see you. I don't think animals ever forgot the humans that love them!!
So glad your PT is starting off so well. You will be up and about in no time at all. Keep up the good work and positive attitude..=)
((((HUGS))))
Lisa! I'm so glad you got such a wonderful visit to your herd! When I fell off Arwen in 2006, I spent two weeks in bed. I couldn't walk straight for months to come, but I still remember the wonderful feeling of coming out for the first time and hugging my mare. My beloved mare. I'm so glad you got to enjoy Baby Doll and the rest of your oh-so-charming crew - and I am sure it won't be long until you are back.
Here's a huge hug from Niger!
//Esther
OMG! It's so nice to see you out with your critters, especially Baby Doll! It must have felt great to get finally get out and get those nuzzles!
Oh your critters love you and really seem to have missed you! Those pics are all too sweet. I'm glad you got your critter and Baby Doll fix, always a good Rx for any ailment...
I just got caught up again on your blog, I'm sorry you're in so much pain:-( I can barely read your posts because they just make me cringe!
Jingles for that leg to heal quickly and for all the pain to go away!
