Welcome Equine Guest Blogger!

Howdy! Apache here.

My Mom gave me permission to be a guest speaker on her blog since I’m always letting her take photos of me. I told her if she let me speak on her blog, I’d stop sticking my nose in her face and try not to lick her hair whenever she points that little black box at me. I even promised I’d strike a pretty pose for her sometimes, too. Aren’t I a good girl?

My Mom said this is the first time she’s ever let a horse be a guest speaker on her blog. I feel very honored. She must think I’m rather special.

I really just wanted to be a guest speaker so I could let you all know how thoughtful my Mom, Dad and Kidlet Family have been to me during the recent Deep Freeze we experienced here in New Mexico. My Mom tells me that our temperatures were below zero at night and didn’t even get above 10 degrees during the day. That sure sounds cold, doesn’t it?

All I know is that my water buckets were almost frozen solid and not even my nose or my hoof could break through. My Mom tried using a hammer to break it up, but the ice was several inches thick and wasn’t worth the trouble just to get to the shallow water at the bottom, she said.

I tell ya, my Mom, my Dad, and that twinling kid, Jax really worked hard trying to make sure I had everything I’d need to make me comfortable. They surprised me the first morning by hauling a really big blue container, filled with toasty hot water, all the way up the hill to me in the barn….on a flat thing that made snake-like noises as it slid and slithered behind them. I was a little worried the first time I saw it, but after I sniffed the blue thing and the sliding thing, that my Mom called a sled, I didn’t worry about it anymore.

My Mom said she was really proud of me and reminded me of how spooky and upset at new things her first horse, Baby Doll used to get. She said that Baby Doll would have never even gotten close enough to sniff those new things, like I did all on my own. She said I was very brave. Awww, isn’t my Mom really nice to tell me that?

Anyway, the hot water was really great! It thawed out my water bucket and gave me the most wonderful warm water to drink. Drinking ice cold water in the winter every day really gets to be a drag, ya know? And my Mom even used some of the warm water to make me the most delish warm bran mash in the morning. I tell ya, the thought of that warm mash gave me something to look forward to as I braved the below zero temps each night….aahhhh! I wish I could have that every morning…..night….oh all right…all the time. sigh.

Not gonna happen. My Mom tells me I’m an Air Fern, whatever that means. I’ve never even seen a fern before. I don’t even think they grow here. Oh well.

Anyway, even though it was below zero here, I didn’t feel cold because my Mom kept me tucked inside the barn, out of the fierce winds (I really don’t like wind) during the worst of it. And because I have grown the thickest, plushest fur coat this winter, I stay toasty warm. Oh. And my Mom seems to really like my fur coat, too. She hangs out with me and buries her hands in it all the time. I don’t mind it too much, especially after she’s given me a few carrots to crunch. It actually feels kind of nice to have her hands in my fur (when she puts that little black box away)

I tell ya, though. I sure am glad to be back outside in my own big yard where I can run and roll around in the snow. I really like snow and don’t even mind curling up and taking a nap in it. But mostly I like the way the sun reflects in the bright white snow and makes me feel so blissfully warm. If I close my eyes, I can almost believe that the grass is green and it’s summer time again. Mmmmm.

Apache, you are just too darn cute! It sounds awfully cold there, and here I have been complaining of cold temps in the upper teens!
I do have to say that your fur coat stays so clean! My fuzzy ponies turn yellow and the mud just cakes to their fur, and right now the mud is frozen to their fur and it will not come off even with a good curry! I tried really hard today to get it out, but it was not to be.
Stay warm down there!

You know it's cold when you can't break the ice with a hammer. I'm already sick of the hammering, but I'm trying not to complain, because the hot water hauling is way worse and more time consuming. What's funny is that each time I'd break some ice, the horses would swing their butts toward me. I could tell from their body language that they didn't have the intention to kick, but wondered why they did that. Then I realized that ice chunks were flying out of the water trough and hitting them. They were just trying to protect their eyes.

It's very nice to make your acquaintance, Apache. I'm glad that you appreciate the lovely home that your people have created for you. Humans just love nice thick winter horse fur. But, then, you find that, in the summer, they love to stroke your satiny smooth summer fur, too. Let's face it, good humans just love horses, and all critters, any way they can find them.

Please ask your Mom if you can guest blog more often.

Good job Apache, you are a beautiful girl. Below zero? Oh my.

Tell your Mom, yes we have ski resorts - Sugar, Beech, AppalachianSki, and SevenDevils.

Apache, it's so nice to finally hear from you! You sound pretty darn blessed! Please do me a favor--don't tell all the horses at GGYR about your cushy conditions. Oh, and especially don't tell the horses at the Wade Ranch. You keep that awesome news all to yourself.

Stay warm. Oh yeah, you already are. Well, then how 'bout Happy New Year!

It's so nice to hear from you, Apache! I'm glad you're not bothered by the cold; I bet I'd be worried about you if I had to watch you stand outside in the blowing snow. But with those warm mashes and wonderful thick coat, I guess both your Moms know how to see you through the winter (the other one being Mother Nature!)

Enjoy the snow, and keep dreaming of that fresh spring grass! Mmmm...is it even better than warm mashes?

Apache is such a sweet mare. They sure are nice and wooly now aren't they? Something I just was reviewing in my old papers I wrote was the bit about the bucket colour. Temperature of the water was also a big factor and horses even in the summer were more likely to drink warm water even if a few degrees warmer.

There's something about a healthy winter coat that feels like a good quality plush toy. Apache looks like she's wearing one of those coats this winter, no wonder Lisa wants to rub her hands through it.

Hi Apache, so great to hear from you, you type very well, tell me, how do you fit your hooves on the computer keyboard? I am very glad to hear that your family is taking good care of you during these chilly days. To be honest, I think your Mom would do anything for you - she loves you very much :)
