Oak Flats Trail Ride

Going to try something a little different for this post.

A good riding friend of mine, named Trish works for Outside Magazine, and often receives awesome products from companies as a perk. She surprised me recently by gifting me and my kids a brand new Magellan 110 Series GPS because she had upgraded to a Garmin (another freebie perk from her job).

I decided to take my new GPS on last Friday’s trail ride to track the trails that we were planning on riding on. And after the fact, I’m pretty happy I did that, because we had quite an awesome adventure on our trail ride!

Peggy, Kendra and I chose to ride Oak Flats together because this area is basically in our backyards. I live only about 15 minutes from the Oak Flats Trailhead, and it’s just awesome to be able to ride such beautiful trails so close to our homes.

I rode at Oak Flats once before, with my friend Colleen. I rode Rosie, the worth-her-weight-in-gold confidence builder lesson horse that helped me learn to love trail riding and horses again. That was an important ride for me as it was my first time riding in the snow again after I had been tossed by my first horse, Baby Doll, on a snowy Christmas Eve ride, over 4 years ago.

I have also hiked Oak Flat Trails with my kids, too.

But I had never ridden these trails on my own sweet horse, Apache Mare and I was very excited to get out there and explore with my good riding buddies. So, we loaded up our horses, tacked up at the trailhead and were ready to ride just before 11am. We were out on the trails for about 5 1/2 hours and we covered close to 10 miles!!!

With the help of my 15 year old techie son, Jax, I was able to upload the data from my GPS to Every Trail.com, and then I added the photos to the waypoints on the trail map. It’s pretty cool stuff and totally interactive. You can enlarge the slideshow and map so it’s a full screen deal. You can also stop the slide show, click on any photo to make it larger, or just ‘x’ the slide show, and click on any waypoint pin on the trail map to view the photos as you travel along the trails that we rode on last Friday! Pretty awesome!

                                 Check it out!

I don't go too far without my GPS, I don't like getting lost, especially when I have to travel into the city ;) Hope you enjoy yours, you find it very helpful!

Interesting, I never thought of taking a GPS while riding before. But it is neat to be able to see where the pics were taken at.

I've never heard of EveryTrail.com until now. What a cool app! So much fun to see the pictures and where they were along the trail – almost like being there.

I use Everytrail through an ap on my phone. I love it! I didn't know you could use it without a phone. That's pretty cool.

Looks like a beautiful ride! Glad your friend's horse started feeling better, that would be scary.
